VICE-CHANCELLOR RECEIVES SASAKAWA SAFE PROGRAMME DELEGATION
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang received a ten member delegation led by the Managing Director of the Sasakwa Africa Fund for Extension Education, Dr. Deola Naibakeao, in the University Council Chamber on Monday 1st February, 2010.
After Introducing members of the delegation, the Dean of the School of Agriculture, UCC, Prof. J. A. Kwarteng stated that the purpose of their visit was to inform the Vice-Chancellor about a meeting of various delegates from African Countries at the University of Cape Coast, which is a pioneer of the Sasakawa programme, to share best practices.
He said that as part of government's directive that Educational institutions should help farmers add value to their products, all the Department in the School of Agriculture will undertake curricular reviews in due course. This will enable the School of Agriculture help farmers to add value to their products and make them competitive in the world market.
Dr. Naibakelao indicated their commitment to emphasise value chain in agriculture to have benefits as a way of helping farmers add value to their produce.
The Vice-Chancellor welcomed the delegation and stated that, she was proud of the School of Agriculture symbolized and achieved so far. She noted that "agriculture encapsulated everything one could think of." She expressed optimism that "there is so much we as Africans can share."
The Registrar, Mr. Isaac Ohene also took the opportunity to welcome the delegation to the University of Cape Coast. He indicated that the University was working towards achieving a 50/50 balance in female and male student population. He urged the discussants to share their experiences so as to generate new ideas.
She urged the delegates to continue their good work and also reach out to farmers. She wished the delegation an enjoyable stay and encouraged them to visit all the historical sites in Cape Coast before leaving.
Present at the meeting were the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole, Dr. Festus Annor-Frimpong, Departmentof Agricultural Economics and Extension; Co-ordinator, SAFEProgramme, UCC, Dr. Ernest Okorley and Assistant Registrar, School of Agriculture, Mrs. Mary Owusu Obimpeh.
The delegation included SAFE members from various African Countries.
