Optometry is a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated and regulated (licensed/registered), and optometrists eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.

Department of Optometry at the University of Cape Coast offers the most comprehensive and skilled eye health education, patient care training, with strong emphasis on pediatric and geriatric care and outreach to community lacking much needed eye care.
More than 200 students are studying with us for the Doctor of Optometry degree as full-time, fee paying and foreign students at main campus of University of Cape Coast, in Cape Coast.
Our department was the first to run a 6-year non-terminal profession Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree. We are one of the founder members of the Ghana Optometric Association, and the Allied Health Professional Council of Ghana, and member of both the African and World Councils of Optometry. With us, you'll develop the skills to meet the competency level anywhere in the worlds, and start on the path to professional registration.
Our Doctor of Optometry (with BSc (Hons)) Optometry are fully accredited by the Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC) and the National Accreditation Board (NAB).
Links with industry
Our department has established memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a variety of local and foreign organisations in the optical and healthcare sectors, including local hospitals and charitable organisations, Voluntary Optometric Services for Humanity (VOSH), Vision Aid Overseas, Grasshopper Foundation, the Ghana Optometric Association and several Private Optical and Ophthalmic Dispensing facilities, where our students are able to practice during long and short vacation internships. The Ministry of Health (MOH) Oyoko Opticians Dispensing School is affiliated to our Department.
Good career prospects
The University of Cape Coast have one of the highest employability rates in the higher education sector. Our Optometry graduates have been recommended as having the high skill needed to practice the full scope of optometry by Employers. Some of our recent graduates have taken up employment with Ghana Health Service, Teaching Hospital, the Military Hospitals, the Police Hospitals, Teaching Appointments in Universities and some are practicing abroad with Bupa, Boots Opticians, Specsavers, Vision Express, and Optical Express. Several of our graduates have the highest rate to go on and do masters and PhD in specialty fields such as Low Vision, Contact Lens, Orthoptics, Pediatrics and Binocular Vision, Environmental and Occupational Optometry, etc.
All of our staff are clinically trained and registered, and hold research degrees and are active in research and other professional activities.
