The Institute for Development Studies (IDS) will be running the above mentioned programme at the IDS, University of Cape Coast, Ghana from May to July, 2016. The Executive Postgraduate Certificate in Labour Policy Studies (LPS) programme is designed and aimed at strengthening the capacity of African trade unions as partners in the development process in order to effectively influence the social, economic and political conditions under which people live and work in Africa. Thus, the Labour Policy Studies (LPS) programme is an international post-graduate trade union education and training programme that offers career development and enhancement opportunities for trade union office holders, trade union policy makers, government officials and policy makers and/or advisers of management or employer organizations actively involved in labour policy issues across Africa; labour practitioners, trade union educators and researchers, HRM practitioners and also representatives of NGOs, journalists, academics and researchers etc.   The LPS is an intensive programme offered over a 12-week period on a modular basis, with courses delivered by seasoned local and international University lecturers and researchers in the field of labour in Africa and beyond. Also very experienced and seasoned trade unionists and labour practitioners deliver courses and seminars on the programme. This year, the LPS programme will run between 4th May and   31st July 2016.   The entry requirements for the LPS programme include:

  • A first degree in any subject area plus a minimum of two years’ working experience, or        
  • A minimum of a second class upper division in the Diploma in Labour Studies programme offered in the University of Cape Coast or its equivalent, or
  • Applicant should be at least 35 years and working in a leadership position with considerable experience and knowledge in labour and trade union management. He/she must have at least GCE Ordinary Level or SSCE pass in English Language or its equivalent. 

The LPS programme is run on a fee paying basis. The fees for this year (2016) are:  GH¢5,000 for Ghanaian Applicants and GH¢6,000 for non-Ghanaian applicants covering tuition and basic course materials only. Boarding and Lodging will be at applicant’s own cost.   Attached for your attention is a copy of the Application Form from which you may run several copies for your members. Please note however, that an amount of GH¢250.00 (Two Hundred Ghana Cedis) will have to be paid to the Institute for Development Studies as Processing Fee for the programme. A copy of the pay-in-slip should be attached to the forms on submission.
