This course will examine several definitions of Music-Philosophical, Sociological, aesthetic and Religious. A study of the music of Primitive societies will offer insight into the origins and nature of music including existing theories like Darwinian and the Calling Signal Theories. Class discussion will focus on musical symbols. Instrumental classification of use, musical styles in Africa and musical meaning. It will also answer several questions including what music communicates-non verbal feelings and musical functions in the African society.
