The Director of the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) of the Republic of Liberia, Dr. Edward Lama Wonkeryor, has held a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong in an effort to seek academic partnership to transform the higher education system in Liberia.
During the meeting, Dr. Wonkeryor said there were sixty-one universities and colleges in Liberia, but pointed out that the higher institution system was bereft of qualified teaching staff.
"So I will want some of the senior faculty from UCC to come (to Liberia) and help us to train our people which is in the supreme interest of Africa solidarity," he continued.
The Director-General told Prof. Boampong that when Liberian President George Manneh Weah appointed him to the position in October 2021, he embarked on a mission to revive the quality of higher education in his home country.
In that regard, Dr. Wonkeryor passionately appeal to UCC to provide assistance to NCHE in areas such as curriculum development, teaching, research, and quality assurance.
Welcoming Dr. Wonkeryor and his accompanying delegation to UCC, Prof. Boampong highlighted the Kenness of the University of Cape Coast to build a strong network of relationships with higher educational institutions in Liberia.
He told the delegation that UCC had a slew of erudite professors to assist the NCHE to streamline the higher education subsector of Liberia.
Consequently, the visiting delegation was briefed by the Prof. Boampong on the history, mission, vision and laurels of the UCC , a breakdown of the governance structure, colleges, academic and administrative directorates of the University.
The Vice-Chancellor seized the opportunity to wish Dr. Wonkeryor and the Liberian peoples continued progress and prosperity.
The delegation was accompanied by Mr. Emmanuel Abayatey, the Acting Public Relations Corporate Affairs at the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), as well as Mrs. Elain Adjepong, an Assistant Secretary at Accreditation Directorate at GTEC.
