Training Description: The workshop is intended to introduce students to the types and nature of data sets available, where they can be accessed as well as how to get it ready for use. Students will accordingly be introduced to the use of some statistical software such as STATA, SPSS, EVIEWS, Excel and NVIVO. Emphasis will however be placed on developing the data management and analysis skills of students since it is an essential component of the research process. The scope of the workshop will include a writing skills session and managing long word document, specifically, to the APA writing and referencing style as required by the University of Cape Coast. Hence, students will be introduced to the use of software such as Microsoft word and Zotero referencing.  

Objective: The main objective of the workshop is to enable students develop the necessary skills for writing of their project work and also get them to better appreciate data management (and analysis??) as critical component in assessing the quality of a research output. 

Target Audience: The workshop mainly targets all final year students in the College of Humanities and Legal Studies.

Expected Outcomes: At the end of the workshop, participants would be able to:

1. Identify the appropriate data set for their project work;
2. Easily access data from the various data sources;
3. Identify the appropriate statistical tool and software for their analysis;
4. Manage data sets from either secondary or primary sources;
5. Analyse data and check for rudimentary robustness of the findings; and 
6. Write and format project work in line with UCC standards; 

Motivation: Final year students undertaking project works have received very little or no training on how to handle data when it comes to their project work. This is partly due to inadequate time for such training. This workshop is therefore intended to serve as a platform where students will have the opportunity to acquire the skills of managing their primary and secondary data sets for their research work. They will also have the chance to practically engage in hands-on exercise that will enable them appreciate data management and analysis in research. It also provides students with an opportunity to learn how to use academic software for research.
