Cape Coast, March 24 2022: The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SoPPS), University of Cape Coast, has been granted accreditation by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana to analyze Herbal Medicinal Products before they are authorized for use in humans. This accreditation was granted after detailed inspection of facilities and procedures at the SoPPS Laboratories by the FDA and the successful implementation of a Corrective and Preventive Action by SoPPS.

Herbal medicines are widely used in Ghana with it being the 1st treatment option for a significant portion of the Ghanaian populace. To ensure that herbal medicinal products on the Ghanaian market are standardized, of the highest quality and are safe for human use, specific quality analysis of such products must be carried out before they are approved by the FDA for use in humans.

This accreditation of SoPPS Laboratories by FDA will enable SoPPS and the University of Cape Coast to contribute to the safeguarding of public safety in the use of herbal medicinal products in Ghana prior to product certification.

Manufacturers of herbal medicinal products are encouraged to utilize these services of UCC SoPPS for prompt and comprehensive analysis of their herbal medicinal products prior to FDA authorization for human use.
