UCC hosts 4-day workshop on Detecting Pathogens

The University of Cape Coast has hosted a four-day training workshop to build the capacities of faculty and postgraduate students on detecting pathogens.

The workshop, which was on the theme "Strengthening and Building Research Capabilities using Lamp Techniques as a Prototype for Detecting Pathogens", is a joint project by the French Embassy in Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Opening the workshop, the Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences (CoHAS), Prof. Martins Ekor, noted that the workshop would strengthen and position the two universities to be equipped to face future pandemics.

"COVID-19 has taught us a great lesson and we need to be prepared to tackle any unforeseen pandemic," he said.

Prof. Ekor commended faculty members of KNUST and UCC for supporting the project and also thanked the French Embassy in Ghana for sponsoring the workshop.

The Provost of CoHAS called on participants to actively participate in the workshop so as to gain more insight that would help them contribute meaningfully to the fight against pandemic.

The representative of the French Embassy in Ghana, Dr. Florent Engelmann, , who joined the workshop via Zoom,said his outfit was ready to partner institutions to undertake research projects to solve challenges facing humanity.

He indicated that the Embassy in partnership with the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat would continue to provide scholarships to Ghanaians to study at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in France.

Present at the opening ceremony were the Dean, School of Graduate Studies, Prof. Sarah Darkwah and lecturers from KNUST and UCC.

Vice-Chancellor hosts Executives of International Students Association

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has hosted a delegation of International Students Association (ISA) branch of the University of Cape (UCC).

The delegation was led by Mr. Edwin Y. Gonquoi to the Council Chamber.

Mr. Gonquoi used the opportunity to highlight some of the concerns of International Students in UCC.

Amongst others, he appealed to Management of the University to put up a permanent structure that would accommodate only foreign students.

The President also asked for speedy ethical clearance of research works of international students "owing to the fixed time frame attached to sponsored programmes."

"The ISA should be allocated an annual budget to enhance smooth implementation of International Students' related activities at UCC,” Mr. Gonquoi added.

He further called on management to put in measures so that international students out of Ghana after the completion of their studies in the University would be able to receive their certificates from UCC in their respective locations without coming to Ghana."

Responding, Prof Boampong, after welcoming the ISA-UCC executives, assured them of management’s continued support throughout their studies.

He promised the executives that he would use his good offices to address the list of challenges highlighted by the president.

The Vice-Chancellor told the executives that he would personally pay a familiarisation visit to interact with international students residing at Superannuation Hostel, saying the welfare of international students was equally dear to his heart.

Prof Boampong pledged UCC’s continuous support to provide a conducive environment for international students to study and conduct research.

The Registrar, Mr. Jeff Teye Onyame was in attendance during the meeting.

The leadership of ISA-UCC was accompanied by the Dean of International Relations Office, Prof Kwaku Boakye, the Vice Dean of OIR, Dr. Samuel Bert Boadi -Kusi, as well as staff members of OIR.

CoHAS Lecturers attend workshop on Grant and Proposal Writing

A section of senior members (academic) of the College of Health and Allied Sciences (CoHAS), University of Cape Coast (UCC) are participating in a workshop on Grant and Proposal Writing at the Coconut Grove Hotel in Cape Coast.

The workshop, which will span a five-day period, is being organised by the Biomedical and Clinical Research Centre of CoHAS-UCC in collaboration with African Centre of Excellence for Population, Health and Policy, as well as Bayero University, Kano in Nigeria.

The mandate of the Centre is to promote research and grantsmanship within CoHAS in particular and the University of Cape Coast in general.

Topics to be treated by the participants during the five-day workshop include; ‘Understanding the funder and knowing the funder requirements’, ‘An overview of the grant scoring process’ and ‘Overview of study designs for qualitative studies’. Others are ‘Data management’, ‘Defining your output/outcome/impact variables’, ‘Overview of mixed-method research’ and ‘Budgeting’ amongst others.

Addressing the participants during the opening ceremony, the Director of the Biomedical and Clinical Research Centre, Prof. Samuel Kyei, observed that the workshop would improve grant proposal writing skills, and foster more collaborations among lecturers within the University and with external partners.

"While in our jurisdiction the mantra is “publish or perish", elsewhere it is to get a grant or perish. This new demand to get grant or perish is catching up with us quickly and as an institution, we need to up our game before it is too late" he said.

Against this backdrop, Prof. Kyei indicated that CoHAS was making untiring efforts to use workshops to refresh and build capacity of academic staff for grant proposal writing to prepare faculty for the challenge of research and project financing.

The Director was of the hope that UCC-industry relationship would be enhanced as the research output from "our University could be translated into finished products and or inform policy for the benefit of society."

The Provost of CoHAS, Prof. Martins Ekor, in his remark, entreated participants to take the workshop seriously and noted that research by academics in the College would put UCC on a giant pedestal.

He said UCC had made remarkable strides in research, stressing that participants should be able to get grants to explore new ideas and expertise in research after the workshop.

Facilitators for the workshop are from the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) - UCC, University of Ghana, and Bayero University.

There will also be networking and brainstorming sessions, where issues regarding grant and proposal writing will be discussed.

Participants will be presented with certificates for the five-day encounter.

Uphold core values of UCC – Pro VC to fresh students

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, has advised fresh students to cultivate and maintain the core values of academic excellence, empowerment, equality and ethical behaviour to enable them succeed in the University.

She reminded the students that their level of commitment to academic work would determine their performance in all assessments and examinations at the end of each semester.

Prof. Boohene, therefore, challenged the students to tap into the rich knowledge of professors, senior lecturers and lecturers in the University to achieve their academic dreams.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor made the remarks during the 2022/2023 matriculation ceremony to admit 8,721 students in the University.

“The number is made up of seven thousand, eight hundred and thirty-six (7836) undergraduates and Eight hundred and eighty-five (885) postgraduates,” she continued.

According to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, the total number of undergraduate students is made up of 3,448 females and 4,388 males, whilst post graduate admission also had 319 females and 566 males.

Prof. Boohene added that being bonafide students of the University, the students were guaranteed the rights and privileges of studentship, having subscribed to the oath of allegiance of the University.

She said the new environment would come with all the “freedom” but that must be used responsibly.

She entreated the students to observe personal safety precautions and urged them to strictly adhere to rules and regulations in the Students’ Handbook.

Touching on students’ residential facility on campus, the Pro Vice-Chancellor noted that the “Management of the University is doing everything possible to ensure that students experience a congenial atmosphere for both social and academic work.”

Prof. Boohene used the occasion to tout the remarkable achievements of the University to the fresh students, mentioning that UCC was ranked number one in Ghana and West Africa, fourth in Africa and 24^th in Research influence and globally among 200 universities in the 2022 by the World University index ranking.

She lauded the athletes who participated in the 2022 Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The ceremony, which was held at the New Examination Centre, was also streamed live for the benefit of other students in the halls of residence.

UCC and COA Research & Manufacturing Company Limited explore areas of collaboration

The University of Cape Coast and Centre of Awareness Research & Manufacturing Company Limited (COA), producers of COA mixture, formerly known as COA-FS are exploring wide-ranging areas of collaboration between the two institutions.

This came to light when the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, led a five-member delegation to pay a working visit to COA at Wusorkrom, Abura Asebu Kwamankese District in the Central Region.

Academia-industry relationship

In her remark, Prof. Boohene explained that UCC was committed to promoting academia-industry relationship to facilitate exchange of best practices.

She stated that the University’s mandate of teaching, research and outreach could only be effective if there existed a strong collaboration with industry.

Prof. Boohene noted that through the College of Health and Allied Sciences, the University would engage COA to carry out innovative research and also expose the students to the preparation of herbal medicine.

“We believe that a collaboration with COA and UCC will go a long way to contribute to the development of Ghana and by extension Africa and the world at large” he stressed.

Touching on the University’s entrepreneurial agenda, the Pro Vice-Chancellor indicated that UCC had established Design, Thinking and Innovation Hub (D-HUB) to equip students with entrepreneurial mindset and reduce graduate unemployment in the country.

“This means that UCC’s collaboration with COA Research & Manufacturing Company Limited will go a long way to churn out students who will become agents of change in our society,” she explained.

Ground-breaking research

On his part, the Founder of COA, Prof. Samuel Ato Duncan, welcomed the team from UCC and described the visit as very significant.

He commended the University for taking the bold step to reach out to his company for collaboration. He noted that COA had established research collaborations with a number of academic institutions outside Ghana.

Prof. Duncan was hopeful that the collaboration with UCC would culminate into ground-breaking research for the production of natural herbal products to treat chronic diseases.

“Our COA Mixture is now globally recognised for treatment of several ailments and I know our collaboration with UCC will help us to do more research to produce more natural herbal products to save humanity,” he averred.

The founder of COA further indicated his readiness to engage other Faculties/Schools/Departments of UCC to work towards promoting peace and development.

“Through my Non-Governmental Organisation- Centre of Awareness Global Peace Mission, we can work together to ensure the development of our country and the world by promoting peace,” he added.

In furtherance to discussions, the two parties have agreed in principle to work towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding to kick start the collaboration within the shortest time.

The UCC team was later taken on a guided tour to the production process of COA Mixture and other products of the company.

The UCC’s team was made up of the Board Chair for D-hub and Head, Department of Agriculture Engineering, Prof. Ernest Abano, Director of D-Hub, Dr. Kerren Abaka; Senior Lecturer at College of Distance Education (CoDE) and Senior Lecturer at Department of Biochemistry, Mr. Caleb Mawuli K Agbale who also doubles as a Board Member of Research & Manufacturing Company Limited.

UCC to host International Conference for Education Researchers in September

The University of Cape Coast will be hosting the second edition of International Conference on Education Research for Development in Africa (ICEDA) from September, 2023.

ICERDA seeks to create a unique space for new and established education researchers to meet regularly to disseminate research that addresses and develops research that inspires policy makers to take action to improve the quality of education for all Africans, especially the disadvantaged and marginalised.

In that regard, a two-member delegation from the Open University, United Kingdom, has called on the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, to brief her about preparations for the conference.

Research partnership

The head of the delegation, Prof. Kwame Acheampong, explained that the conference was a research partnership between UCC and Centre for the Study of Global Development at The Open University, UK.

He added that “ICERDA responds to the need for an independent forum where African voices, and scholars who work with African colleagues, can share evidence-based insights into educating the next generation of young Africans”.

Prof. Acheampong -who was accompanied by Claire Hedges, from Open University, UK - noted that the delegation had engaged the local planning committee and was satisfied with preparations so far.

Prof. Acheampong commended the team from UCC for mobilising the needed resources to ensure a successful conference.

Contemporary isssues

On her part,Prof. Boohene was grateful to Open University, UK for partnering UCC to organise the conference.

She was confident that the conference would serve as a platform to enhance research and exchange of ideas among participants to address contemporary issues bedeviling the education sector in African countries.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor noted that UCC would put in the necessary measures in place to ensure that the conference was successful.

Dean, UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery Meets Dr. David Pierce

The Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr. Nancy Ebu Enyan, has received Dr. David A. Pearce, the President, Innovation, Research and World Clinic to the University.

Dr. Enyan briefed Dr. Pearce and his accompanying delegation on the activities of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

The meeting discussed academic relations between the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Sanford World Clinic, as well as prospects of enhancing collaboration in various vital fields that would be beneficial to the two institutions.

It also explored ways in which the two institutions could collaborate in training, faculty exchange and research.

The meeting highlighted the importance of Sanford World Clinic in the preparation of students of the School of Nursing and Midwifery to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), which is the world's premier licensure exam that uses computerised adaptive testing to deliver the exam.

Dr. Enyan used the chance to present UCC branded mementos to the members of the delegation.

Later, the delegation toured the School of Nursing and Midwifery Skills Laboratory, as well as the Amonoo-Kuofi Medical Village.

Dr. Pearce was accompanied at the meeting by Karolina Slack, Executive Director; Erica De Boer, Chief of Nursing; Jamie Stucky, Clinical Educator; Dr. Kweku Darkwa, Vice-President of Sanford World Clinic-Ghana, and Dr. Kojo Taylor, a member of staff of Sanford World Clinic-Ghana.

RUFORUM Executive Secretary lauds UCC

The Executive Secretary of the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), Prof. Patrick Okori, has lauded the University of Cape Coast (UCC) for its participation in the activities of RUFORUM.

He noted that the contributions of UCC towards RUFORUM since 2014 had been immense and called on faculty to work towards ensuring that RUFORUM achieved its Vision 2030.

Prof. Okori gave the commendation at a meeting with faculty from the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (CANS), UCC.

The Executive Secretary of RUFORUM told faculty that time was ripe for RUFORUM member universities to brainstorm on education, training and research to win more international collaborations.

For his part, the Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, who received the Executive Secretary on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong, congratulated Prof. Patrick Okori on his appointment, which took effect on 1st January, 2023.

He noted that UCC would continue to participate in the RUFORUM and pledged to make sure the vision 2030 of RUFORUM would be achieved.

Prof. Davis called on the Executive Secretary to embrace precision agriculture to increase production.

The Provost added that the University was restructuring its curriculum to meet the changing needs of society so that graduates of the University would not depend solely on government for employment.
