"Country Awards Ghana" Honours Vice-Chancellor

Country Awards Council Ghana has presented a Lifetime Award to the Vice-Chancellor Prof. D. D. Kuupole for his contributions to education.

The Vice-Chancellor is the 6th high profile personality to receive the Life Time Award from the Council.

Award

Country Awards Ghana as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations decided to recognise some personalities who have contributed immensely in their fields of endeavour. The Award, Heroes of Language Research and Higher Education Achievement Award was presented to Prof. Kuupole for his contributions to academia, teaching of the French Language, research and management of Higher Education.

 

Presenting the award, Dr. Kwame Safo Adu said it was appropriate for Prof. Kuupole to be honoured even as he ends his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor and also retiring from over three decades of active public service.

Appreciation

Prof Kuupole thanked the Council for their gesture saying “This award is not for me alone, but those I work with. Without them, I could not have achieved anything”.

“I dedicate this award to all staff, no amount of words can express my gratitude, and only the Almighty can replace all they have invested in me”.

He urged  Ghanaians to work hard to make the world a better place for all humanity.

UCC Health Services Undergoes Peer Review

The Directorate of University Health Services (DUHS) has been assessed by a team of health professionals from some health facilities in the Central Region.

The assessment dubbed “Peer Review”, is an initiative of the Central Regional Health Directorate which brings together health professionals from other sister health centers across the region to share experience and learn from best practices.  As part of the peer review, a hosting health facility provides opportunity for professionals from other health centres to learn at first-hand the operations of their staff and equipment used to deliver medical care to clients.

Assessment of UCC Hospital

Preceding the forum, a team of assessors from the Metro Hospital, Dunkwa on-Offin Hospital, Twifo Praso Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Ankaful Leprosarium, Christian Eye Center and the Ewim Polyclinic familiarised themselves with the operations of the facility and inspected its equipment for healthcare delivery. The team assessed the University Hospital on governance, quality assurance, client care, occupational health and safety, emergency services, infrastructure and environment, infection and prevention control and clinical practices.

Quality on University Agenda

Speaking at the closing session of the forum, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. K. T. Oduro, who chaired the function, lauded the staff and management of the Hospital for availing themselves to be peer-reviewed by their colleagues from other sister health facilities. He noted that the issue of quality has become high on the University agenda to the extent that UCC had instituted Quality Assurance Department, with the aim of placing the University high in terms of ranking. He charged the University Health Directorate to include self-review into its mode of operation to assess staff and units within the facility.

Punctuality to Work

For his part, the Deputy Regional Health Director, Mr. Stephen Anyomi, advised healthcare workers to be punctual to work.  He called on all regional health facilities to, as a matter of urgency, train the emergency medical team to facilitate reported emergency cases adding that " it is part of our performance appraisal of the facility.''

Feedback on Review

On his part, the Director of UCC Health Services, Dr. Evans Ekanem, praised management and staff of the UCC Hospital for their relentless efforts in delivering good health care to the University Community and the general public. He said the Hospital authorities had taken note of all the concerns raised about the facility and would ensure that they were addressed with dispatch.

UCC is 5th Best Health Facility

The Regional Coordinator for the Peer Review, Mr. Georges Fritz Doe, pointed out that seventeen out of the twenty-one hospitals that had been peer-reviewed, UCC Hospital was the fifth on the league table, with 86.6%. He added that St. Francis Hospital was leading the league table with 95.9%, while Dunkwa-on- Offin Hospital had 92.8%, securing the second position. Our Lady of Grace Hospital (Breman Assikuma) and Mercy Women's Hospital garnered 92.9% and 90.5% to place third and fourth positions respectively.

The event, which was held at the UCC Hospital Conference room, was attended by the Dean of Students Affairs, UCC, Prof. Kwaow Edjah; Chief Inspector Christian Anyiddio of the UCC Police District and Mr. Richard Amponsah Peasah who is the Watch 2IC in charge of Medics of the UCC Fire Service Unit.

My Administration Will Continue to Promote the Welfare of FUSSAG Members-Daniel Arthur Egyir

The re-elected Chairman of the University of Cape Coast Chapter of the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), Mr. Daniel Arthur Egyir, has expressed the commitment of his administration to concentrate on promoting the welfare of members of the union. Mr. Egyir gave the assurance  at the Swearing-in and Hand Over Ceremony for the newly elected FUSSAG executives at  Auditorium 900, College of Education Lecture Theatre Complex. Highlighting some of his achievements during his past tenure as chairman of FUSSAG, Mr. Egyir pointed out that his administration initiated several welfare packages to help members of the Union, adding that “notable among them is the free medical scheme”.  He explained that senior staff could now access free medical care and present the prescription for drugs without paying any fee. He indicated that FUSSAG and the Teachers and Education Workers’ Union (TEWU) would soon introduce a package in the form of subsidy to cushion both senior and junior staff in the payment of their children’s school fees. The Chairman of FUSSAG  called for the support of members of the union to assist him and his executives, to effectively execute the mandate they had willingly assigned him. He said the era where union leaders adopted confrontational approach to address grievances was no more and therefore, they would always engage management and the government to negotiate and re-negotiate for improved conditions of service.  He also encouraged members to upgrade themselves, adding that “I’m happy to note that most of the senior staff are pursuing various higher degree and professional programmes.” The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K. T. Oduro, who was the guest speaker for the ceremony, commended FUSSAG for creating a conducive environment for teaching, learning and research in the University. He noted that the University’s inability to recruit additional staff had implication on the workload of all categories of staff.  “We are aware of the situation on the ground and management appreciates your commitment to duty.” he said. Prof. Oduro advised the executives to resort to the right channel of communication when dealing with management and their members on issues that affect their welfare and that of the University. He called for mutual respect for all members of the union, especially the executives, stressing that “together you can make the best out of every situation and give out your ultimate responsibility in whatever capacity you find yourself”. The Director, Directorate of Human Resources, Dr. Kwaku Gyasi Badu, who chaired the ceremony, said FUSSAG represents the middle manpower of the University. He said management and the various unions on campus must work together to promote the vision and mission of the University. He advised the newly elected leaders to exhibit a high sense of professionalism, selflessness and commitment to duty and also encourage their members to be hardworking. Dr. Gyasi Badu later administered the oath of office on the newly-elected leaders of FUSSAG.  Prof. Oduro also swore the elected representatives of the various constituents in the University into office, while Mr. Emmanuel Aidoo, who is a former secretary of FUSSAG and currently Junior Assistant Registrar at the Directorate of Academic Affairs, inducted the members of the Women’s Committee into office. Representatives of other unions that were present at the ceremony also gave solidarity messages. The unions were FUSSAG, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Polytechnic Staff Association-National (POSA) and TEWU, UCC.  

Office of the Dean of Students Interacts with Management of Halls/Hostels

The Office of the Dean of Students has organised a two-day orientation for Hall Masters/ Wardens, Senior Hall Tutors and Hall Tutors at the Conference Room of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Hostel. The programme was aimed at creating a platform to discuss issues pertaining to management of halls of residence in the University. Topics discussed during the two-day programme were: “The Role of Hall Masters/Warden, Senior Hall Tutors and Hall Tutors” which was presented by a former Vice-Dean of Students, Prof. Daniel Okae-Anti. The Dean of the School of Educational Foundations, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Sampson also led discussion on "Counselling in the Hall/Hostel" whilst the Vice-Dean of Students, Dr. Eugene Darteh facilitated discussions on “Dealing with Illegal Groups in the Hall/Hostel".  

Ministry of Health Affiliates Specialised Nursing Training Schools to UCC

The University of Cape Coast has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ministry of Health to mentor all Specialised Nursing Training Schools in the country.

Hitherto, the specialised training schools awarded Advanced Diploma certificates to the Ministry of Health Nurses who specialised in specific fields in the nursing profession. With the current arrangement, UCC will now award bachelor degree certificates to students of these specialised training schools.

As part of preparations to award degrees to these training institutions, a team of assessors from UCC has embarked on an institutional visit to each of the training schools to assist them to put the necessary structures in place.

The institutions visited were, Ear, Nose and Throat Nursing School, Kumasi, School of Anaesthesia, Kumasi, Ophthalmic Nursing School, Public Health Nurses’ School and School of Peri-Operative and Critical Care Nursing, all located at Korle Bu in Accra.

Addressing the various principals and management of these institutions at separate meetings, the leader of the UCC Team of Assessors, Mr. Clement Entsuah-Mensah expressed the commitment of the University to mentor the specialised institutions to ensure that they produce high calibre manpower for the health sector of the country and beyond. He noted that UCC would work together with each of the Training Schools to meet the standards set by the National Accreditation Board, National Council for Tertiary Education and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Mr. Entsuah-Mensah who is also the Librarian of UCC stressed that “UCC stands for quality and therefore we expect that this reflects in all aspects of the training of specialised nurses in each of the institutions”. He further indicated that the University would continue to work with them adding that “We look forward to a time when each of the specialised Training Schools will mature and award its degrees”.

The Head of the Institutional Affiliation Office, Mr. Justice Agyenim Boateng indicated that as a prerequisite for the award of degree by the University and the other regulatory bodies, there was the need for them to put together an approved curriculum, setting up state-of-the-art laboratories, good and disability friendly infrastructure with decent lecture rooms or halls, offices for lecturers and accommodation for students.

The team of assessors later inspected facilities of the various Trainings Schools and offered them the needed advice. The assessors included Mr. Alexander Afrifa Darteh, Mrs. Christiana Okantey, Mrs. Patience Doe, and Mrs. Nancy Ebu Enyan.

Other members of the team were Mr. Peter Fosu Thompson and Mr. Alex Allotey.

UCC Introduces Cape Coast Farmers to Improved Variety of Cowpea

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has introduced improved varieties of cowpea to some farmers in the Cape Coast Metropolis at a training session at the A. G. Carson Teaching and Research Farms.

During the training session known as Farmers Field Day (FFD), the farmers were given the opportunity to select the best improved cowpea varieties of their choice to be developed for planting in their respective farms.  The training programme was to educate and expose the farmers to cowpea cultivation and the economic benefits of the crop. It was aimed at encouraging farmers to make informed decisions to select cowpeas of their choice on the field.

The FFD forms part of a project being undertaken by a research team involving Scientists from the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (UCC) and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the University of Cape Coast.  It is being sponsored by the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture “(ITPGRFA), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the University of Cape Coast. Through this project, the Scientists have developed over 22 varieties of cowpea with distinctive features out of which six (6) would soon be released to farmers.

Briefing the farmers before the field work, the Project Manager, Dr. Aaron T. Asare of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology said cowpea production in the country was very low in spite of the high consumption of the crop in Ghana. He noted that the nutritional value of the crop was very healthy compared to meat adding that “Cowpea is consumed in most homes in Ghana and it is common to find people patronising waakye and gari and beans”. He however expressed worry that most of the cowpea consumed in the country were imported from Burkina Faso and Niger to supplement that of the local market.

Dr. Asare explained that the improved varieties have only eight weeks to mature and will be ready for harvest. He also noted that other varieties of the crop have been developed for the Northern part of the country. He stressed that the cowpea varieties that had been developed were resistant to diseases and drought.

Applicants are therefore advised to visit the website to check their admission status and, if admitted, print their admission letters. It should be noted that the University has already re-opened for the 2016/2017 academic year. Lectures commence on Monday, 29th August, 2016.

UCCSMS Graduates 4th Batch of Medical Doctors

Fifty-six (56) graduates of the School of Medical Sciences of the College of Health and Allied Sciences of the University of Cape Coast have been inducted as full-fledged medical doctors by the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council, Dr. Eli Kwasi Atikpui.

 This took place during the 49th Congregation and 4th Oath Swearing and Induction Ceremony of the School of Medical Sciences.

Twenty-four  (24) awards were shared by 9 graduating students with Lyanne Dede Scackey and Gideon Gawu Mensah picking five awards each. Gideon Gawu Mensah was also adjudged the best overall performing student of the class of 2016.

UCCSMS Provides Quality Medical Education

The Chairman of the University of Cape Coast Governing Council, Nana Sam Brew Butler, addressing the gathering commended the UCCSMS for providing medical education of the highest quality to the students. He pointed out that “information indicates that our products are among the best in the country and are performing creditably’. Nana Butler announced that the University has proposed to provide scholarships to those who would elect to specialise.

To the graduating class, he said, “You have endured great training and today you have earned what only a few can put behind their names. Go out there and demonstrate professionalism as you venture out to serve the sick and humanity’.

Unique Model of UCCSMS Training of Medical Doctors

The Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Education, Prof. Mohammed Salifu, who represented the Minister for Education, said the University’s model of training medical doctors was unique and has produced competent and well-grounded doctors and was confident that they would bring about the needed change in medical practice in the country.

“As we commend you on your unique style, I hope other universities will emulate you as it is a marked change in medical training in Ghana”

Prof. Salifu said the health system was fraught with many challenges that were being addressed by the government at all levels but it would take the collective efforts of all to solve them. He mentioned that the Ministry was prepared to help get cutting edge medical practice and delivery in the country and therefore urged the newly qualified doctors to perform the best they could.

The Executive Secretary appealed the University to reconsider its full fee paying financing model to allow the brilliant but poor to access medical education at UCC.

UCCSMS Products Excelling at their Work Places

Presenting his address, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. D. D. Kuupole said UCCSMS has produced a total of 184 doctors spread over the country to help improve upon the doctor-patient ratio.

Commending the special feature of the medical school’s curriculum, the Community-Based-Experience and Service (COBES) that is designed to give the trainee doctors a hands-on experience of diseases and their treatment. He said it has given the doctors a strong community-based orientation for patient care.

“Mr. Chairman reports received about our doctors indicate that they are performing creditably in hospitals where they have their housemanship and those who have completed their training and are now Medical Doctors are excelling at their workplaces”.

In order to facilitate and enhance training at the school, the Vice-Chancellor announced that the Effia Nkwanta hospital in Sekondi Takoradi has been approved by the Ministry of Health for clinical training of medical students.

Prof. Kuupole bemoaned the slow pace of work on infrastructural facilities of the school saying “it has not made it possible for us to have the full benefit of them”.  

UCCSMS Holds 7th White Coat Ceremony

The School of Medical Sciences (UCCSMS) of the College Health Allied Sciences (CoHAS), University of Cape Coast, has held its 7th White Coat ceremony for 68 students who have completed the first cycle of their medical education.

With this transition, the students who were robed by their lecturers have qualified to commence the second phase of their training to become medical doctors.

White Coat ceremonies are held as rites of passage to symbolize that students have received foundations in medical education and are prepared both physically and mentally to continue at the next level which is the clinical stage.

Welcome Address by Provost

Welcoming the students into the clinical stage of their training to become medical doctors, the Provost of CoHAS, Prof. Harold Steward Amonoo Kuofi, said the first and second cycles were both important to the training of the students. He however, said “the 2nd cycle has the clinical emphasis and professional attitude to medical practice and it ensures that the student know and understand that they have a responsibility towards their patients, UCC and Ghana”.

Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi said since the inception of the school, its students have excelled wherever they have found themselves. According to the Provost, the 68 students who were being robed have passed 18 serious and rigorous examinations and have thus satisfied all requirements to commence their journey to become qualified medical doctors.  He mentioned that UCCSMS has a different training regime from other medical schools in the country saying “UCCSMS’ curriculum is fashioned along the best practices in the world”.

 

Importance of White Coat Ceremony

The Dean of UCCSMS, Prof. Francis Ofei said the ceremony was an important one since it marked a change in the way things were done in the medical practice. He advised the new level 400 students not to just pass through the white ceremony, but observe all the ethics of the profession. He reminded them that whatever they do, henceforth would affect a patient and therefore asked them to be very careful as trainee doctors.

Treat the Patient with Respect

The Chairman of Medical and Dental Council, Dr. Eric Asamoah, who was the guest speaker, impressed upon the students to be dedicated and proficient in their training since medicine was learnt at the bedside and not the classroom.

“The patient will be your greatest teacher so you have to show respect to all you come into contact with. Treat each other with respect so you can treat your patients with respect”, he explained.

He told the students to be diligent in their studies and career since you will have a positive impact on people’s lives adding, “Sometimes your mistakes are irreversible in the emergency room”.

 

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole, when he took his turn remarked that the colour of the coat they were wearing symbolised peace and compassion without which they cannot be called medical doctors.

“I am sure when you finally go out as doctors, we will not be walking into the hands of shabby and careless doctors”, he added.

White Coat Symbolises the Enormous Task Ahead

The Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Ebenezer Appiah Denkyira who chaired the function, told the student-doctors that the coat they were wearing should remind them of the enormity of the task ahead of them and must, therefore, prepare adequately to face it.

He said that the client who would sit in front of them was a friend and a fellow human being in pain and must treat them as such and if they did that they would succeed.

“Your friendship alone will make the difference as you attend to the client”, he said.

He asked them to bear in mind that they were putting on coats of candour, kindness, respect; saying “it is a robe of your profession so keep it well and wear it well as well”.
