University of Cape Coast celebrated the annual International Breast Cancer awareness month. As part of the awareness campaign a free breast cancer screening was organized for the staff of the University. This was the ninth time the Breast Cancer screening was arranged on campus.
Organizer of the Breast Screening campaign, Dr Akwesi Anyanfo, from the Department of Medical Biochemistry, explained the origins of the Breast Cancer Screening campaign, saying that when he had been in the United States he was doing research in breast cancer. Upon his return to Ghana he realized there was not enough awareness of the subject and hence patients could not be identified early enough. Thanks to this initiative more people are now aware of the risks, sign and symptoms of breast cancer.
The Vice-Dean of the School of Agriculture, Prof. Kwame Frimpong, has been offered sponsorship to the tune of $ 11,200 to participate in an Executive Master of Science in Precision Agriculture at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Morocco.
The eight-week programme which is developed by the African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) will be held during the 2021-2022 academic year.
As part of the arrangement, the tuition, accommodation and board for the programme as well as round trip airline tickets between Accra and Morocco for each week would be covered by the sponsorship package.
The sponsorship was communicated in an invitation letter signed Dr. Steve Phillips, the Course Coordinator and Principal Scientist at APNI and addressed to the Director of Research Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC), Prof. Frederick Ato- Armah and copied to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong. The letter partly read “We are pleased to extend an invitation to Prof. Kwame Frimpong to participate in the course as our honored guest. We consider Prof. Frimpong to be a critical partner in our effort to prioritize precision agriculture education in the curricula of B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs at agricultural universities throughout Africa.”
The letter also acknowledged Prof. Frimpong’s expertise in Precision Agriculture, “His international recognition as an expert in precision agriculture and nutrient management, his professional networks, and his position as President of the African Association for Precision Agriculture uniquely position him to champion this effort and we are committed to further building his capacity by investing in him through this opportunity.
The African Plant Nutrition Institute is a not-for-profit research and education organisation headquartered on the campus of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Benguérir, Morocco.

Dr. Christiana Asiedu, a senior lecturer at the School of Nursing and Midwifery has been honoured for her contributions to Nursing and Midwifery education and research.
Dr. Asiedu received the honours during the National Nurses and Midwives Excellence Hall of Fame Awards Night organised by the Ministry of Health in Accra.
The National Nurses and Midwives Excellence Hall of Fame Awards ceremony was organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Health to give special recognition to individuals who have contributed immensely to Nursing & Midwifery in many areas including practice, regulation, leadership, education and research both in Ghana and at the international stage.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences held a week-long outreach programme at Ampenyi M/A Basic School from 18th to 22nd October, 2021. The outreach programme dubbed “Environmental Education towards the Conservation of Biodiversity in the Brenu Lagoon, Ghana” was funded by the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) under their 2021 Global Outreach Initiative.
The programme led by Dr. Margaret Fafa Awushie Akwetey, included five teachers and 50 pupils from the Junior High School (JHS) 2 class. The programme targeted children in order to build a generation of environmentally conscious individuals and responsible adults who will care for their environment. Prof. Joseph Aggrey-Fynn, the Head of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, in his speech at the opening ceremony, explained that the Department has long studied the Brenu Lagoon, in aspects of fish, heavy metals, PAHs and general water quality. The Department has however realised that the state of the lagoon is deteriorating due to activities such as sand winning, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, etc. It is in this light that the Department is collaborating with ASLO to educate a younger generation that will ultimately protect the lagoon. In addition, this approach will encourage and strengthen healthy habits at a young age towards the general well-being of the environment.
Using practical, field and laboratory sessions, the pupils were introduced to a variety of life forms namely plankton, benthos and nekton in water bodies. The importance of aquatic biodiversity, and the impacts of human activities on the environment were also emphasized. Practical sessions included activities such as sampling of benthic macroinvertebrates, water quality analyses and dissection of fish. The pupils were also given the opportunity to use microscopes to examine some organisms sampled. The programme was supported by staff and postgraduate students of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences and staff of the Centre of Coastal Management.
The Headmaster of the Ampenyi M/A Basic School, Mr. Solomon Kweku Bondzie, was thankful to the Department and the University of Cape Coast for the project. He praised the project for the rare learning opportunity offered his school and encouraged the team to continue imparting this information to other communities.
The Student Representative Council in collaboration with the school of business held the second edition of Africa’s Biggest Idea Challenge themed “Growing Ghana Beyond Aid Through Enterprise Development: Student Entrepreneurship in Focus.” 100 contestants who pitched their business ideas were downlisted to 11 finalists. Through the program the students were inspired and helped to take their business idea to the next level.
Scoring judges of the competition were Mr. Philip Brobbey, C.E.O. of Phibro Group, Chairman of Judges; Dr. Edward Nii Amar Amarteifio, Head of UCC Business Incubator;
Mr. Albert Kusi C.E.O. of HMI and Mary Ama Bawa, Broadcast Journalist (ATL FM).
Mr. Dennis Appiah Larbi Ampofo, CEO of AfriCup who originally came up with the idea of Africa’s Biggest Idea Challenge also spoke. He explained that his intention was to launch a project that would assist student entrepreneurs to develop their potentials and indirectly affect the country. He told the students present not to hesitate to tap into the resources made available to them by the Student Representative Council. He encouraged them saying “Building Ghana beyond aid is possible only if we put our work into it.”
The SRC President, Mr. Christopher E. Dadson addressed the participants of the event. He explained that the Africa’s Biggest Idea Challenge seeks to identify and cultivate innovation. He emphasized the importance of making the country self-reliant and that UCC and Africa’s Biggest Challenge are part of these efforts.
Representative of VC, chair at the event, Prof. Daniel Agyapong, Associate Professor in finance and entrepreneurship, school of business in his speech ensured that UCC would continue providing the enabling environment to students and staff to showcase their innovative skills and ideas through programs such as this. He reminded the audience that when the Vice-Chancellor resumed office, his vision was to make the University of Cape Coast an entrepreneurial University. University of Cape Coast is committed to partnership so that students who are interested in entrepreneurship can always get the needed support. One guarantee of that is the Business and Enterprise Development Policy and the Entrepreneurship policy, which is being drafted.
Hon. Dr. John Kuma, MP for Ejisu, Deputy Finance Minister gave a keynote speech. As a UCC alumni he expressed his pride for UCC’s achievements. He said that the youth constitute of true wealth and future of the country. “Addressing their hopes and aspiration must be an integral part of our socio-economic development and efforts. ” He reminded that the National Youth Policy of Ghana provides the opportunity of government engagement with the youth and other stakeholders in meaningful partnership to develop corporate innovations and service for youth empowerment.
Honorable John Ghartey, MP of Essikado-Ketan Constituency gave a speech. He talked about his roots as a student entrepreneur. He inspired the listeners with the story about his humble beginnings and hard work. He encouraged the participants of the competition to move forward determined. He said that the country needs entrepreneurs to take the country forward. He had high hopes on the students and expressed his willingness to sponsor the next edition of the competition.
The Winner of the competition was Sartom Insectary, a company which sells insect-based animal feed. All the finalists also received business advisory services and support.
