The University of Cape Coast has held a matriculation ceremony for fresh students of the 2020/2021 Sandwich academic year. The ceremony saw a total of 559 undergraduates and 1019 postgraduate matriculants presented by Provosts of Colleges to be matriculated.

Addressing the matriculants, The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong congratulated them on securing a place in the University. He indicated that the matriculation ceremony marked the formal admission of students into the University and also provided students with the opportunity to pledge their absolute allegiance to the university authorities.

“In the University of Cape Coast, our lecturers, scholars, and researchers are dedicated to not only help you obtain that prestigious and enviable degree but also to help expand your understanding of the society and the world at large,” he added.

He urged the students to get acquainted with the University’s rules and regulations collated in the Students Handbook, Academic Programmes, Policies and Regulations, Brochure on Graduate Studies. “I wish to emphasize that these rules and regulations are not to punish you. They are meant to keep order and harmony in the University and make your life and stay here enjoyable.”

Administering the matriculation oath to the new students was the Registrar, Mr Jeff Teye Nyame.

UCC Embarks on Project “Green Ghana Green UCC”

11 Jun, 2021 By DIS

Management, staff and students of the University of Cape Coast in collaboration with the Forestry Commission have embarked on a tree planting exercise on the University campus. Dubbed “Green Ghana = Green UCC”, the exercise is part of the Vice-Chancellor’s vision and falls in line with the Government’s Green Ghana Project. In all, fifty thousand (50,000) trees were earmarked for planting.

Addressing the planters, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, lauded the government for initiating the Green Ghana Project. He said, "with the initiative to plant 5 million trees, the Government understands and knows that our survival as a people depends on the vegetation cover and that without it, we will experience adverse environmental effects."

Prof.  Nyarko Boampong also indicated that making the University green would create and promote a conducive environment for academic work.

"We are not going to plant the trees and leave them but we are going to nurture them so that the University will have a very green environment that will support teaching and learning," he added.

On her part, the Central Regional Minister, Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, said that the exercise would be extended to areas affected by illegal small-scale gold mining in governments efforts to reclaim degraded lands.

Present to support the exercise were members of the senior national team the Black Stars.

UCC confers Honorary Degree on President Akufo-Addo

02 Jun, 2021 By DIS

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has conferred an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership degree on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at a special congregation held in his honour.

The honorary degree, which is the highest honour given by the University, is in recognition of the President’s immense contribution to education in the country.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the second President of Ghana after former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and the 40th outstanding personality to receive an honorary degree from the University of Cape Coast.

The Chancellor of UCC, Dr. Sir Samuel E. Jonah, explained that the Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy, was a major criterion for the selection of the President for the honorary degree. He noted that the policy has expanded access to Senior High School and paved the way for many young Ghanaians who otherwise would not had been able to afford SHS education to gain access into Senior High School. “The financial burden that has been lifted off some parents and guardians cannot be overemphasized. Without a shadow of doubt, the free SHS policy is a bold decision and one of the best social intervention policies ever taken by any leader of this country,” he stated.

Aside the Free SHS policy, the Chancellor noted that there were many other achievements by the President which contributed to his selection for the University’s highest honour.

The Chancellor noted that since the attainment of a full university status in 1972, UCC had sought to identify and award outstanding personalities. He said the achievements of these personalities encompassed any of the following “distinguished service to the University; distinguished service to the country or international community, distinguished service to humanity; outstanding pioneering role resulting in a breakthrough in an important sector of the economy, and outstanding original contribution to any academic discipline”.

Dr. Sir Jonah further indicated that “As we recognise the exceptional contributions of honourees to society, we also recognise and celebrate their lifetime achievements in specific fields that sets standards of excellence in society”.

The Chancellor of UCC urged the President not to forget the University, adding “As we do with all our alumni, we urge you to remember your alma mater wherever you will be and in whatever capacity you find yourself”.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, commended President Akufo-Addo for championing a number of reforms in the educational sector. He was grateful to the President for supporting the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA) to be upgraded into a UNESCO Category II Institute adding “This has positioned IEPA as an enviable international institution”.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that his vision for the University is to transform UCC into a global entrepreneurial hub of academic excellence. He explained that the desire to empower UCC graduates to have entrepreneurial competencies was in line with the President’s policy initiative on National Entrepreneurial and Innovation Programme.

Touching on admission of students into the University, Prof. Boampong noted that only 43 per cent of applicants for undergraduate programmes were admitted by the University for the 2020/2021 academic year due to limited infrastructure.  He further indicated that only 25 per cent of students were offered accommodation into the University’s Halls of Residence, leaving 75 per cent who were housed outside campus under very deplorable conditions.

To this end, Prof. Boampong appealed to the President to adopt the construction of a 5,500 student accomodation facility to be built in his honour to solve the accommodation crises in the University, and also increase enrolment of students. “Here at the University, Halls of Residence are named after great men like Casely Hayord, and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah among others, therefore, a new Hall of Residence, to be named after a great and illustrious son of Ghana, His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be appreciated,” he requested.

President Akufo-Addo in his acceptance speech, expressed gratitude to the Governing Council of UCC for the kind gesture, and pledged his government’s unflinching commitment towards ensuring a better Ghana.  The President accepted the Vice-Chancellor’s request to adopt the construction of a new 5,500-student accommodation facility for the University.

“I am delighted that this University, established in this famous town to advance the cause of education in our country, is the first  Ghanaian University to accord me this honour, even though, I do not have the accolade of being its alumnus, because of the introduction and acceptance of the Free SHS policy promoted by my Government, which has expanded dramatically access to education,  enabling hundreds of thousands of young men and women, from all corners of our country, to go to Senior High School” he added.

President Akufo-Addo stated that the Free SHS policy was an indication that Ghana could now begin to reap the fruits of the talents of all its young people considering the outstanding results of the first graduates of the policy in the most recent West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The President later joined the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and members of the Governing Council of UCC to commission a new administration block named after Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Adow Obeng (who was present at the commissioning ceremony), a former Vice-Chancellor, under whose leadership the construction of the building started.

The Director for DRIC, Prof. Frederick Ato Armah,

School of Nursing and Midwifery holds Maiden Research Support Grants Award Ceremony

27 May, 2021 By DIS

The School of Nursing and Midwifery (SNM), in collaboration with the Directorate of Research,

Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC), has held its maiden Research Support Grants Award

Ceremony.

The Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr Nancy Innocentia Ebu Enyan, explained

that the principal goal of the ceremony was to work towards achieving the current Research

Agenda of the University of Cape Coast which focused on “Education and Environment for

Sustainable Development”. She said, “In line with this goal, the School developed four thematic

areas in 2018 which were influenced by patient and client needs, and national health sector

priorities.” The priority research areas identified to guide the development of departmental

research includes: Promoting quality nursing and midwifery education, clinical and community

management of chronic conditions and disabilities, women’s health, maternal and child health,

Hospital-acquired infections and HIV/AIDS management.

She congratulated the Heads of Department and faculty for their immense support in achieving

the initiative. "I'm hopeful that we will be energized by this and stay focused in our research

paths to enhance the visibility of faculty members, the School and the University at large," she

added.

The Director for DRIC, Prof. Frederick Ato Armah, presented the keynote address on the topic,

“Twenty-first-century nursing education, responsible research and innovation for national

development and impact”. He noted that the ability of nurses to make use of new and future

technologies, such as robotics, automation and digitalization, would be an important competitive

advantage which is crucial for success in a world of globally competitive markets.

“Long-term focus on research quality is an essential prerequisite for a high university innovation

impact. UCC in general, and the School of Nursing and Midwifery in particular, therefore need

to keep up our efforts for research excellence along the entirety of the Technology Readiness

Level (TRL), which requires a close and long-term collaboration between academia, research

organizations and the private and public sectors,” he noted.

Prof. Armah stated that the future of nursing would depend on experienced nurses taking a

leadership role to train incoming generations, a community-based approach to care, and a focus

on demographic shifts.

“This implies that nurse researchers, educators, and leaders must work with professional nursing

organizations for a structured process to develop new research-related policies, standards, and

recommended guidelines to help shape innovations in nursing scholarly research partnerships,"

he added.

There were 13 awardees from the Departments of Adult Health, Maternal and Child Health, and

Mental Health. The grants awarded were for the following research projects:

 Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Clinical Placement of Nursing Students and

Clinicians.

 Midwives' experience of providing care during COVID-19 Pandemic in the Central

Region of Ghana.

 Psychotropic Medication adherence/Non-adherence among patients in Psychiatric

Hospitals in Ghana.

The Grants Award ceremony was chaired by Prof. Mrs. Rosemond Boohene of the School of

Business, UCC.

Present at the ceremony was the Provost, College of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof. Martins

Ekor, Deans, Deputy Directors of DRIC, Heads of Department, and faculty members.
