The Pro Vice-Chancellor and GRASAG President opening the StuFSO

UCC Creates Scholarship Opportunity for Needy but Brilliant Students

24 Aug, 2020 By louis Mensah

Needy but brilliant students in the University of Cape Coast can now access scholarship packages to complete their studies.

This opportunity has been made possible with the official opening of the Students Financial Support Office (StuFSO) with the mandate to provide financial support to students to pursue their education.

Inauguration

Inaugurating the office, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh, noted that Management was aware of the difficulties some students in the University were facing in terms of getting financial support to complete their studies and therefore, instituted a central fund to offer scholarships to such students. “Management put up a proposal on the establishment of the Student Financial Support Office and a Fund to support students which Council approved”.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor noted that the StuFSO was directly under the Office of the Vice-Chancellor considering its unique function in the University. She noted that Management was aware that some students approached lecturers to assist them financially to pay their fees but added that “We think it is the University’s responsibility to offer this financial assistance like what some old universities do”.

According to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, the University was not only focusing on needy but brilliant students but those who were also “needy but promising” so that they could also rise in the academic ladder.

Activities of StuFSO

Touching on activities of the Office, Prof. Edu-Buandoh indicated that the office was supervised by an 11-member committee including student leaders adding that “we included the Presidents of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and Graduate Students Association (GRASAG) so that students will have a voice in deciding the funding for students”.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor further noted that the University had established links with the Government of Ghana Scholarship and other institutions and agencies. “The office will eventually coordinate all the support from various corporate institutions and facilitate other scholarships like GNPC, CAMFED, etc. This is to enable the office to offer such support to students who are really in need,” she explained.

On the sources of funding for the office, she noted that the University contributed the initial funding whilst the various student unions also supported with some amount of money. She expressed gratitude to GRASAG, SRC, and the Distance Education Students Association (DESAG) for contributing generously to the fund.

Free Services

The Assistant Registrar in-charge of the Students’ Financial Support Office, Mr. Alfred Ghartey, announced that the services of the office were free so students could always come around to make enquiries.  “Let me emphasise that our doors are opened to students and we have not engaged any person or group to serve as liaison between the office and students,” he clarified.

In terms of eligibility, he explained that the applicant must be a Ghanaian student who has enrolled in UCC either on regular or distance modes and must demonstrate that they were really in need of financial support. Aside from these, a needy but brilliant student must possess a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 whilst a promising student should have a CGPA of 2.5.

 StuFSO Committee

It would be recalled that the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah the inaugurated an 11-member Students’ Financial Support Committee to oversee the operation of the StuFSO.

The committee which is chaired by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, has the following members, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Director of Academic Affairs; Director of Finance, and Academic Board Representative,.

The rest are the  representatives of the SRC , GRASAG, DESAG, UCC Alumni,  Legal Office, and Secretary to the Committee, Mr. Alfred Ghartey.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, and the Registrar, Mr. Jeff Teye Emmanuel Onyame, have called on the Management of the Central Regional Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In his opening remarks, Prof. Boampong noted that the services ECG provided were very critical to the operation of the University. He noted that it was heartwarming that the University had over the years collaborated with ECG to deliver quality education to numerous Ghanaians. “It will be difficult to effectively carry out our mandate without electricity especially in this era where every organisation or institution is going digital,” he stated.

Introduction

The Vice-Chancellor said the visit was to formally introduce themselves to Management of the Company and also deepen the mutually beneficial relationship between the University and ECG. “We are aware of the exceptional services you are giving to the University community and I am here to ask for your continuous support as we also take up leadership of the University,” he entreated.

The incoming Central Regional General Manager, Ing. Emmanuel Ankomah, pledged to enhance the collaboration between ECG and UCC. “I know the value of our relationship so I will also play my part to take it to another level. UCC is very dear to our hearts,” he assured.

The team from UCC was made up of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh; Ag. Director of Public Health, Major Kofi Baah-Bentum (Rtd); Vice-Chancellor's Secretary, Ms. Elizabeth Yankah. The rest were Ing. Ebenezer Sackey, Ing. Anthony Atta-Bosompem and Ing. Joseph W. Ansah from the Directorate of Physical Development and Estate Management (DPDEM).

UCC Matriculates 2019/2020 Sandwich Students

18 Aug, 2020 By louis Mensah

A total of 1,859 students have been admitted by the University to pursue various programmes both at undergraduate and graduate levels via the Sandwich mode.
The number is made up of 559 undergraduates and 1,300 postgraduate students.

This was announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, during a matriculation ceremony for Sandwich students on campus.

UCC's Environment

In his address, Prof. Boampong said the University has always provided an environment that exposed students to an entertaining and a wide-range of learning experiences. “Our lecturers, scholars and researchers are not only here to help you obtain that prestigious and enviable University of Cape Coast degree, but also to help expand your understanding of society and the world, at large” and asked them to feel proud of being part of this academic environment.

Virtues

Extolling the virtues of the University, Prof. Boampong noted that, the University did not only pride itself in training students in academic work but also was concerned with moulding their character so that upon graduation the student would be ready to be a responsible citizen to contribute to national development in a patriotic and result-oriented manner. “Our hope is that you will imbibe the virtues of self-discipline, self-care, good mode of dressing, fidelity to your studies and work, and general comportment before you graduate from this University”, he added.

Freedom and Responsibility

The Vice-Chancellor reminded the matriculants that “The University is a place where you enjoy a lot of freedoms, but that freedom often comes with some corresponding obligations. Here your freedom ends where another person’s freedom begins”.  “So not only must you protect your rights, privileges and freedoms, you must also ensure that you do not trample on the rights and freedoms of others”, he said.

Rules and Regulations

On rules and regulations, the Vice-Chancellor said the University like any other university, has rules and regulations but were not meant to punish them rather ensure that there was order and harmony in the University and also to make their stay on campus enjoyable. Continuing, he said that the University would continue to maintain zero tolerance for all anti-social behaviours such as cultism, examination malpractices, hooliganism, prostitution and other vices. “The University has enjoyed relative peace over the years and, therefore, you are advised to keep the matriculation oath and stay away from any activities that will constitute a threat to the peace of this noble institution”, he admonished them. He said the University as an institution was committed to helping them achieve their dreams and should, therefore, study hard and adhered to the rule and regulations contained in the student’s handbooks.

COVID-19

Turning to COVID-19, he said the pandemic had rendered today’s world as has never been seen before, anticipated or planned for. Again, he said the foundation of all societal institutions had changed completely and for that matter, the conduct of tertiary education had no other option than to undergo several reforms to survive. “We may never go back to the system you were most acquainted with; you, therefore, have to brace yourselves for enormous novel challenges. We encourage you to continue to observe the COVID-19 protocols and measures put in place to stay safe”, he concluded.

CHEMICAL KINETICS

The course offers a more advanced on kinetic concepts related to chemical processes with an emphasis on how mechanistic proposals arise from measurements. Topics to be discussed will include: molecularity of elementary reactions, determination of reaction order, experimental rate law, steady-state approximation, pseudo first order reactions, complex reactions (parallel, series, consecutive and reversible reactions), collision theory, and transition state theory. It will also introduce students to reactor designs (batch and continuous reactors), and heterogeneous catalysis (acid-base catalysis and enzymatic catalysis). Prerequisite: CHE 203
