Institute of Education Honours Prof. Frederick Ocansey

The Institute of Education (IOE), UCC, has held a Send-off Ceremony to honour the immediate past Director, Prof. Frederick Ocansey.


In her welcome address, the Director, IOE, Prof. Christine Adu-Yeboah, stated that the purpose of the ceremony was to celebrate and honour the former Director for his service to the Institute during his tenure. She commended him for his good leadership and the due diligence he exhibited towards his responsibilities at the Institute. 

Appreciation


In his response, Prof. Ocansey expressed his profound gratitude to the new leadership of the Institute for the honour done him. He thanked Management of the University for the confidence reposed in him to work as the Director of the Institute. Prof. Ocansey said, “It was an opportunity but a great responsibility to serve in that capacity for the University and the nation.” He encouraged the new leadership of the Institute to work hard to safeguard the reputation of UCC, especially in terms of Teacher Professional Education in Ghana. He acknowledged the effort and support of all the academic and administrative staff of the Institute as well as the principals of all the Colleges of Education in the country. Prof. Ocansey assured his successor and the entire Institute of his support  

Be of Assistance to the New Director

The Vice-Chancellor, UCC, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, congratulated Prof. Frederick Ocansey for his dedicated and committed service to the University and the Institute. The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of Management of the University, applauded the former Director for the good manner he carried out his duties and responsibilities. He appealed to him to always be of assistance to the Institute when the need arose. 


The current leadership of IOE made a presentation of a citation and an undisclosed amount of cash to the former Director.


In attendance were the Registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan, Provost, College of Education Studies,  Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, Director of Academic Affairs, Mr. Jeff Teye Onyame,  Provost, College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Prof. Francis Eric Amuquandoh, and Dean, School of Educational Development and Outreach (SEDO), Prof. George K. T. Oduro. Others were the Senior Assistant Registrar, Institute of Education, Mr. David Larbi, academic and administrative staff of the Institute.

School of Physical Sciences Holds Dean’s Awards

The School of Physical Sciences has held  Dean’s Awards Ceremony to honour and motivate its hardworking students for the 2018/2019 academic year. 

Honouring Hardworking Students


The Acting Dean of the School, Prof. Ruphino Zugle, in his welcome address, stated that the ceremony was instituted four years ago to honour continuing students who excelled in their programme of study in the previous academic year. He said, “The aim is to encourage such students to work even harder to obtain good classes at the end of their studies.” The Ag. Dean also indicated that the ceremony would also serve as an opportunity to particularly draw the attention of other students in the School to realise their capabilities of achieving greater heights if they would work extra hard in their studies. 

According to him, statistics have shown that with the inception of this awards ceremony, the number of students whose Cumulative Grade Point Average have gone above 3.6 has increased significantly. Prof. Zugle, noted that 128 qualified to be awarded, which is a marked improvement as compared to last year, which was 102. He added that the interest of both staff and students in the programme has increased significantly, which could be seen from the appreciable increase in the number of Special Awards from departments and individual lecturers.

Aspire for Greater Height

Prof. Zugle, who chaired the function, applauded the awardees for their excellent performance and urged them to aspire for greater height. He commended the lecturers and staff for their collective effort, support and hard work towards the development and smooth running of the School. The Ag. Dean said, “While we celebrate academic excellence, some of our students, we need to reflect soberly and find innovative ways to bring up our academically weak students.


The Provost, College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (CANS), Prof. Moses Jojo Eghan, congratulated the awardees for their hard work and academic excellence. He also encouraged those who were not awarded to work hard, so as to receive prizes in subsequent years. Prof. Eghan charged lecturers in the School to continue to use the appropriate teaching methods to help students understand and earn good grades in their various courses and programmes. 

Seek Counselling


The Provost urged the students to see academic counsellors for counselling and guidance when the need arose. He commended the former Provost of CANS, Prof. Livingstone K. Sam-Amoah and the former Dean, School of Physical Sciences, who is the current Vice-Chancellor of Koforidua Technical University (KTU), Prof. David K. Essumang, for their effort to revive the Dean's Awards during their leadership.   
Citations of honour were presented to the former Provost, CANS, Prof. Livingston K. Sam-Amoah and the former Dean, School of Physical Sciences, Prof. David K. Essumang, current Vice-Chancellor, Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU), Prof. Josuah D. Owusu-Sekyere and former College Finance Officer, who is the current Finance Director, CCTU, Mr. Kwabena Owusu for their immense contribution and support towards the development of both the College and the School. 


In all, a total of one hundred and twenty-eight (128) students received awards for academic excellence and remarkable academic performance.
Present at the function were the Ag. Vice Dean, Prof. Emmanuel Essel, the College Registrar, Mrs. Mildred Asmah, lecturers, staff and students of the School.  
 

Nursing Anaesthesia

This course is designed to equip students with the techniques of Anaesthesia and Anaesthesia-related care to facilitate diagnostic, therapeutic, or surgical procedures. Evidence-based practices in Anaesthesia will be explored. Pre, intra and post Anaesthesia techniques will be addressed. Weekly seminars and discussions on key practices in Anaesthesia will be held.

Critical Care

This course is designed to build on the students’ foundation knowledge in critical care nursing. It employs a systems approach to the development of advanced intensive care nursing knowledge and practice. Content will focus on care of the patient with neurological, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, haematological and multisystem disorders. Promotion of evidence based practice will be integral to course delivery and clinical case reviews. Standards for critical care nursing practice and professional issues will be addressed. Using current research findings, students will have an opportunity to examine and critically analyze current issues affecting critical care nursing practice.

Advanced Clinical Practicum II in Specialty Area

This course will be taken concurrently with NUR 822 during the inter-semester period. The student will be expected to apply previously acquired knowledge and skills to enact point-of-care leadership behaviours while demonstrating increased proficiency in health professions’ core competencies. The student will spend 9 hours in a clinical setting per week for a minimum of 6 months under supervision of a preceptor.  Seminars and discussions with faculty supervisors will be an integral part of this course.
