UCC students to benefit from Tertiary Students Drive Service of DVLA

24 Jul, 2023 By DIS

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has expressed its readiness to introduce the Tertiary Students Drive Service (TSDS) initiative at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

When introduced, the TSDS will afford students the opportunity to acquire a valid driver’s licence while in school.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the DVLA, Mr Kwasi Agyemang Busia, made this known when he led a high-level management of the Authority to pay a working visit to management of UCC.

Since he took office in February 2017, Mr. Busia indicated that he had embarked on a transformative drive at the Authority  and further seeks to enhance that drive by partnering UCC to build and establish research collaboration that would be a boon for students.

He added that the mandate of the DVLA was to ensure good driving practices in Ghana and  noted that  the TertDrive programme by DVLA would  also educate the  student body more on road safety.

The Provost of the College of Health Allied Sciences, Prof. Martins Ekor, who received the delegation, welcomed the  idea by DVLA to extend its Tertiary Students Drive Service to UCC.

Prof. Ekor told the management of DVLA to laise with the Department of Geography and Regional  Planning, Department of Optometry and the Transport Section  of the University to get the TertDrive programme introduced.

As part of the meeting, the Deputy Director of Business Research, Development and Innovation at DVLA, Mr. Abraham Zaato, made a powerpoint presentation on the successes chalked up by DVLA. He reiterated that the Authority had over the years worked to correct the negative image it has had as a corrupt public institution in the country.

NPA Shares Downstream Operations Success Story with Students

24 Jul, 2023 By DIS

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has highlighted measures being implemented to sanitise the downstream petroleum industry through the enforcement of industry regulations.

That, according to the NPA, was to ensure a level playing field for all operators.

The Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, said this at the maiden edition of the Gown and the Town Series organised by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

It was on the topic, "Downstream Petroleum Industry in Ghana; The State of Play."

Dr. Abdul-Hamid, who is also a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Religion and Human Values-UCC,  added that the NPA would spare no effort to ensure that petroleum service providers comply with the various guidelines, rules and regulations set out for operators in the downstream petroleum industry.

The CEO explained that the NPA operates a robust monitoring regime to protect the interest of petroleum consumers in the country. He,therefore, asked for increased cooperation between  NPA and players within the downstream sector to ensure security of energy supply and affordability as a result of the global oil and gas market volatility.

Consequently, he pointed out that the NPA had begun regional outreach to create awareness about its operations to engender mutual trust and cooperation with players in the petroleum downstream sector.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid indicated that petroleum consumers should be rest assured that they were receiving the right quantity of petroleum products, at the right price, at the right quantity, at the various retail outlets they interfaced with.

The Head of Petroleum Pricing at the NPA, Mr. Abass Ibrahim Tasunti, took the participants through how prices of petroleum products were determined.

In a short remark, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof Kwabena Sarfo Sarfo Kantanka, urged the NPA to continue with the transformative initiative. He praised Dr. Abdul-Hamid for his exceptional leadership in the country’s downstream petroleum industry.

Use Planting for Food and Jobs to Address North-South Seasonal Labour Migration – Prof. Tanle

24 Jul, 2023 By DIS

Government's flagship programme of Planting for Food and Jobs could partly address north-south seasonal labour migration in Ghana. This is according to a Professor of Migration and Refugees Studies, Prof Augustine Tanle.

According to him, this is achievable “if the necessary infrastructure (irrigation facilities), inputs (fertilizer and relevant chemicals) and technical support are provided devoid of partisanship and political rhetoric”.

He underscored the need for government to facilitate the creation of growth poles in areas such as Wa, Bolgatanga,Tamale, Damongo and Nalerigu, indicating that : " these can serve as development points so that the peripheral areas can be attractive for further development."

Prof. Tanle made the remark at his inaugural lecture which was on the topic: “Interrogating North-South Seasonal Labour Migration in Ghana as a Livelihood Strategy”.

_30i6643_1.jpg

Prof. Tanle being robed by the members of the College of Professors-UCC

He admitted that the main drivers of north-south seasonal labour migration from northern Ghana were widespread poverty, poor physical characteristics and differences in socio-economic opportunities and infrastructural development  between the northern and southern Ghana.

Prof. Tanle, who is also the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Social Science, University of Cape Coast,  appealed to government to make conscious efforts to expand socio-economic opportunities and infrastructural development in northern Ghana.

He expressed the hope that such opportunities and facilities could create the enabling environment for investment, motivate individual or group enterprises in both agriculture and non-agriculture enterprises.

That, he said, could create job opportunities for people who, otherwise, would have migrated to southern Ghana where opportunities for their services had now dwindled.

_30i6813.jpg

Prof. Tanle receiving a citation from the Faculty of Social Sciences – UCC

He expressed the belief that Ghana was not likely to achieve the Sustainanable Development Goals 1,2,4,6 and 10, which deal with poverty, hunger, quality education, clean water and sanitation, and reduced inequalities, respectively, owing to the widespread spatial inequalities in socio-economic development between northern and southern Ghana.

Prof. Tanle, therefore, passionately appealed to government to channel its development policies to the northern part of the country to bridge the yawning gap between the north and south.
