Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department

Vision statement: 
To have a department that is well positioned for global recognition.
Mission statement: 
To realise this vision, the department offers market driven programmes and services that respond to critical needs of society in the areas of health, physical activity, recreation and sports. The department offers academic programmes, research activities and outreach services that produce well grounded (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) graduates at all levels of expertise with inclusion and equal opportunity.
History: 
With historic roots dating to the 1986, our academic programmes in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation has established itself as a leader in providing quality professional education experiences in the areas of health, physical education and recreation. Our faculty is dedicated to providing students with an outstanding educational experience that is linked to the highest standards of professional service. When you come to the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, you will find a friendly atmosphere and scholarship of the highest quality. The Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) is the pioneer department to offer a bachelor degree in physical education in Ghana.  Physical Education Bachelor Degree courses started in 1986. In 1994 a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programmes in Health Education and Physical Education was introduced. At present, the Department of HPER offers post graduate (MPhil and Ph.D.) programmes in physical education and health education with emphases in Exercise Science, Curriculum and Teaching, Sports Management, Sports and Exercise Psychology, Environmental and Occupational Health promotion, Community Health Promotion, and Maternal and Child Health Promotion. In addition, the department offers Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Physical Education and Master of Arts (MA) in Health Education degree programmes on sandwich basis for the working professionals. The Department for the past five years has enrolled about 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate majors in health and physical education.

Ghanaian Languages and Linguistics Department

Vision statement: 
The vision of the Department is to see Ghanaian Languages used as languages of administration at District, Regional and National levels.  
Mission statement: 
To ensure quality training of our students and also sensitize the general public on the place and role of languages in national development, especially Ghanaian Languages.
History: 
The Department of Ghanaian Languages and Linguistics is one of the oldest of the ten departments in the Faculty of Arts. The fundamental goal of the Department is to be a Centre of Excellence in research, study, usage and teaching of as many Ghanaian Languages as possible, especially those that the Republic of Ghana has approved for formal education. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate programmes. It offers courses in Ghanaian Linguistic Theory at all levels to facilitate the study of the Linguistics of each Ghanaian Language offered. It as well offers General Linguistics as part of its undergraduate programmes. At the postgraduate level, the Department offers courses to students who wish to pursue Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) programmes in Akan or Ewe. Presently, courses are available in: Akan Language, Akan Literature, Ewe Language, Ewe Literature, Ga Language, Ga Literature. These programmes are aimed at training students to meet some demands on the market in the fields of teaching, media communication, translation etc. The Department is dedicated to quality education and research; our graduates are highly recruited within educational and research institutions, the media, government agencies, and publishing firms. Department of Ghanaian Languages and Linguistics

Geography and Regional Planning Department

Vision statement: 
To be recognise as a Department in Social Sciences, excellent in teaching and learning, research and outreach in Geography and Regional Planning as important disciplines capable of contributing to contemporary issues on the physical environment, spatial planning, population, health and development.
Mission statement: 
Significantly contribute the University of Cape Coast mission of being ‘the University of Choice in Ghana by producing high calibre educators, facilitators and researchers in Geography, Regional Planning and related areas.
History: 
The Department of Geography was established in 1962 to run an undergraduate programme in Geography. Since the late 1980s, the Department has been running postgraduate programmes. In the 1996/97 academic year, the programmes were expanded to include Tourism and Population and Family Life Education programmes. The name of the Department was subsequently changed to the Department of Geography and Tourism. In 2008, three Departments were created from the then Geography and Tourism namely, Geography and Regional Planning, Department of Population and Health and Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Forensic Sciences Department

Vision statement: 
To have a Department that serves as a pivot for the training of Forensic Scientists with world-wide acclaim.
Mission statement: 
To provide unique training programmes which enable students from different backgrounds to meet the challenges of their countries by partnering with society to find solutions to problems.
History: 
The Department of Forensic Sciences was established in August 2015 with six students and five faculty. After two years, we have 86 students, 9 full-time faculty, 6 part-time faculty and one visiting professor. Philosophy We recognize that the number of forensic scientists in Ghana is woefully inadequate considering the current population and the pace of development.  Also as crime becomes increasingly sophisticated, the demand grows for highly skilled forensic scientists capable of innovating, performing and analyzing scientific procedures to improve crime prevention and detection. In line with this philosophy, we believe in the need to: turn out more students for professional careers related to crime prevention and detection; provide students with critical thinking and technical skills required for lifelong success in forensic and investigative sciences; produce confident, competent and ethically-minded future forensic scientists; advance the various fields through innovative research to solve pertinent problems that confront the country; impart knowledge, skills and intellectual leadership in the public and private sector. Goal and Objectives Our goal is to produce graduates dedicated to pursuing careers in forensic and investigative sciences to augment the justice delivery system. The objectives of the Department are to: train students to become innovative and provide exemplary leadership; train students to conduct research and contribute to knowledge in the field of forensic sciences; produce competent graduates to pursue further studies in field of forensic sciences;

Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Department

Vision statement: 
Vision:  To become a leading institution of learning, teaching and research in Fisheries and Coastal Management in Ghana; a Department of choice, having unique and innovative activities with the capacity to advance healthy marine, coastal and inland aquatic ecosystems for sustained provision of goods and services in collaboration with public and private institutions locally and internationally.
Mission statement: 
The Department aims to achieve an appropriate balance between conservation and utilization of Ghana’s marine, coastal and inland fisheries and aquatic resources through integrated scientific research, education of the next generation of fisheries scientists and coastal management practitioners, as well as undertake community outreach interventions.
History: 
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS) in the University of Cape Coast is a department in the School of Biological Sciences at the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (CANS).The University borders the Gulf of Guinea and is located in the Central Region of Ghana, which has the highest marine fish production in the country. The Department’s location thus exposes students to a vast array of opportunities for studies in coastal marine and brackish studies. The Department offers a four-year Under Graduate Programme leading to the wards of B. Sc. Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. The Department offers Postgraduate Programmes (M. Phil & Ph. D.) in four areas of specialization Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Oceanography and Limnology and Integrated Coastal Zone Management.

Finance Department

Vision statement: 
To be a leading department of excellent in finance education- developing innovative leaders.
Mission statement: 
The Department of Finance is a centre of excellence providing high quality research, training and consultancy in finance.  The mission is accomplished through instruction supported by applied research and professional service. It focuses on programmes that are forward-looking and career-oriented with strong industry collaboration using state of the art technology.  
History: 
During the 2004/2005 academic year, the School of Business was established with two departments: Department of Management Studies and Department of Accounting and Finance.  In line with with the Strategic Plan of Department of Accounting and Finance,  a four-member committee was constituted  and tasked to create two departments out of the existing Department of Accounting and Finance.  The proposal was given approval by the Academic Board at its Third Regular Meeting held on 17th March, 2016. The Department of Finance, therefore, became operational from 1st August, 2016, that is, 2016/2017 academic year. The Department runs both postgraduate and undergraduate programmes.

Environmental Science Department

Vision statement: 
To develop into a renowned center of excellence for teaching and research into environmental issues.
Mission statement: 
Train middle and high level environmental scientists capable of tackling the nation's numerous environmental issues. This will be accomplished through instruction, supported by applied research and service to private and public organizations using state of the art technology. the Department is committed to being a local, national and international leader in the training of students for viable careers in the environmental industry.
History: 
The Department was established in 2002 as a result of restructuring of the now defunct Departments of Zoology and Botany. The courses of the Department undergo constant review to make them more relevant to national developmental and international needs. Ours is student friendly Department where educational, emotional and social problems of students are catered for through effective guidance and counselling, and referrals where professional engagement is deemed fit.The Department is to endow students with sufficient knowledge in environmental issues, basic ability to think logically and the skills to utilize acquired knowledge to solve environmental problems in the various communities for their personal gains and the good of the society at large. The competencies of faculty members have been developed to solve environmental problems related to water, soil, atmospheric pollution, biodiversity and conservation. Apart from teaching, faculty members in the Department continues to engage themselves in active research and renders extension services to community.The Department regularly reviews its syllabus and introduces new programmes to meet the demand needs of the nation as well as international needs. It also encourages its faculty members and staff to develop themselves to play their roles effectively and for self advancement of their careers. The Department also renders outreach programs through its facilities, i.e., Herbarium Unit and Botanical Garden to various categories of interest groups. These include Senior Members in the fields of applied biology and applied chemistry and students of first and second cycle institutions. Various religious and social groups also patronize the Botanical Garden.
