To make the Department a Centre of Excellence in teaching and research in English language and Literature- in- English.
Mission statement: 
To produce teachers, lecturers and researchers in the area of English and also to train English language  and Anglophone specialists who can be useful assets to the world of industry, especially in areas like the Media, Banking, Commercial Practices, Professional Secretariat posts, etc.
History: 
The Department of English is in the Faculty of Arts which is within the College of Humanities and Legal Studies (CHLS) of the University of Cape Coast. The Department offers a B. A. (English) programme and six post graduate programmes, namely: M.A English Language (Sandwich), M.A Literature-in-English (Sandwich), M.Phil English Language, M.Phil Literature-in-English and PhD English Language PhD Literature-in-English. The M.A. (Sandwich) programme caters for workers and professionals who may not have the opportunity to obtain a graduate degree as full-time students. Further, the Department offers a One-Year Proficiency Programme for Francophone students who wish to upgrade their English language proficiency with a view to studying or working in an English-speaking country.
