DAAD Alumni Donates Masks to Staff and Taxi Drivers on UCC Campus

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Alumni in the Central and Western Regions has presented 750 pieces of face masks to members of the Teachers and Education Workers' Union (TEWU) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) at a short ceremony on campus.
The Association also distributed 250 masks to taxi drivers, passengers, and food vendors at the taxi ranks at both the South and North campuses of the University.

Purpose of Donation

The President of the Association, Dr. Benjamin Aboagye, noted that the group saw the donation as its contribution towards the fight against the novel Corona Virus. He said apart from the distribution of the face masks, they were educating the general public to observe the safety protocols in order to stay healthy and prevent the spread of the virus. “We decided as a group to also help in efforts being made by the Ghana Health Service to minimize the spread of the virus, especially in the Western and Central Regions as well as the entire country,” he explained.

Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora F. Edu-Buandoh, who is a member of the Association, indicated that the Alumni group was made up of individuals who had benefitted from scholarships funded by DAAD to study for their Masters, Ph.D. or short programmes in Germany. She further averred that the Association owed it as a duty to help people in need in these difficult times. “Considering the context that we find ourselves, we decided to help others as our contribution to society to the fight against COVID-19,” she noted.

Prof. Edu-Buandoh also used the opportunity to express appreciation to members of the Association for accepting to distribute the masks to people within the UCC campus. “Though I am a member of this group, I wish to thank you on behalf of Management of the University for supporting our efforts to ensure that each member of the University community is protected from the virus,” she stated.

The Vice-Chairman of TEWU-UCC, Mr. Peter Bentum, who received the face masks on behalf of members of the Union expressed gratitude to the DAAD Alumni for thinking about their health and safety. He gave the assurance that the masks would be distributed to members to ensure that they were protected from the Virus.
