The University of Cape Coast (UCC) Primary School has held its 55th Speech and Prize Giving Day on the theme, "58 years of Quality Primary Education: Expanding the Frontiers."
Speaking at the event, the Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs (DPA)-UCC, Major (rtd) Kofi Baah-Bentum, called on all school children to develop the habit of reading to help broaden their knowledge and horizons. While outlining the benefits pupils stood to obtain through reading, he mentioned that if children read a lot of books in addition to their lessons in the classroom, it would help them build a wide vocabulary to enhance their reading and writing skills and help them perform brilliantly at school.
Major Bentum, who chaired the function, advised the pupils to be focused and spend more time with their books rather than watching television programmes which would not benefit them. He admonished the pupils to take their academic work seriously, and follow good morals and values to make them better citizens.
The Director of DPA-UCC also entreated all stakeholders to help in the character-building and discipline of children.
For her part, the Headmistress of the School, Mrs Georgina Aglobitse, in her report, expressed her gratitude to the various stakeholders of the school for their contributions to the enviable records of the school so far. She also made particular mention of the sterling performance of some pupils of the school in recent times at the National Spelling Bee competition which had further positioned the school in good light.
She noted the School had produced great men and women in enviable positions around the globe and charged all to support the vision of the School to continue to improve its laurels.
Mrs. Aglobitse also urged parents to visit the school regularly to enquire about the performance of their children so that they would be able to assist them to improve on their academic performance.
She mentioned inadequate furniture, security issues, leaking roofs and indiscipline as some of the challenges militating against the school.
"Management and PTA are working assiduously to have these challenges ameliorated" she added.
The headteacher thanked the management of the University and parents for their continuous support of the school.
Awards
The 55th Speech and Prize Giving Day saw deserving teachers and pupils of the school being honoured for distinguishing themselves in their line of work and studies.
In all, one hundred and twenty pupils from both lower and upper primary received awards. The deserving pupils were presented with certificates of honour as an acknowledgement of their good academic performance.
The event was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the Cape Coast Technical University, Very Rev. Prof. Ing. Owusu Sekyere; College Registrar of the College of Distance Education (CoDE-UCC), Mr. Elliot Nyieku, the Head of the Transport Section-UCC, Mr. Frederick Baidoo, amongst others.
