The University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the Morgan State University in Baltimore, USA have agreed to lay a foundation for a vibrant collaboration between the two institutions.

The collaboration would explore areas of mutual benefits and will focus, solely, on academic exchanges.  

This agreement was reached when the Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong and his team paid a duty call to the Morgan State University as part of their visit to key strategic partners in the United States.

Founded in 1867, Morgan State University is a Carnegie-classified high research (R2) institution offering nearly one hundred and twenty (120) academic programmes leading to degrees from the baccalaureate to doctorate. As Maryland’s Preeminent Public Urban Research University, and the only university to have its entire campus designated as a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Morgan serves a multi-ethnic and multi-racial student body and seeks to ensure that the doors of higher education are opened as wide as possible to as many as possible.

The University of Cape Coast team was welcomed by the President, Dr. David K. Wilson and Dr. Hongtao Yu; Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; Sidney H Evans, Executive Vice President; Finance & Administration, as well as all Cabinet members of the Morgan State University. Present also was Dr. Yacob Astatke, Vice President, Division of International Affairs who coordinated the visit of the UCC delegation.

In his welcome speech, at an extended Cabinet meeting, Dr. David K. Wilson expressed the desire of his administration to collaborate with the University of Cape Coast in areas that could build the capacity of the black people.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast on the other hand, indicated that he was excited for the opportunity to work with Morgan State University, particularly because the two institutions have a common agenda of providing quality education to empower the black people to be able to manage their own affairs.

The discussions also centered on how a team of experts will assist the University of Cape Coast in developing a School of Architecture using modern approaches. Morgan state also indicated their readiness to accept newly recruited faculty from the University of Cape Coast for training at the PhD level in their niche areas. Further discussions were to be held during a visit of the President of Morgan State to the University of Cape Coast in May, 2023.  Further, both parties agreed to discuss mutually beneficial methods of financing students and staff exchanges.

The UCC team was taken round several laboratories and simulation rooms for the School of Engineering and Architecture among others.
