Dept. of Conservation Biology and Entomology champions efforts to eliminate malaria

28 Aug, 2023 By DIS
The Department of Conservation Biology and Entomology  of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has accelerated efforts aimed at reducing  malaria prevalence in the country.

Malaria, according to the Department, remained a public health concern and a leading cause of death in Ghana.

_30i8762.jpg

Ms. Otubea Akrofi

Against that backdrop, the Department, in conjunction with the Laser and Fibre Optics Centre at the Department of Physics-UCC, held a conference on Emerging Optical Spectroscopic Techniques in Mosquito Surveillance.

The confab, to commemorate the 2023 World Mosquito Day, was to explore low-cost  approaches for mosquito surveillance using optical spectroscopic techniques for a malaria-free nation.

Speaking at the event, a Deputy Chief Medical Entomologist on National Malaria Elimination Programme of the Ghana Health Service, Ms. Otubea Akrofi, said Ghana had set an ambitious target to eradicate malaria from the country by 2030.

She said the disease attacks everyone within its reach but mostly kills children.

Providing statistics, She added that malaria prevalence had reduced from 27.5 per cent in 2011 to 8.6 per cent in 2022, while mortality had reduced by 95 per cent between 2012 and 2022, representing a decline from 2,799 deaths in 2012 to 151 in 2022.

Ms. Akrofi observed that intensive efforts had been made to control the disease through strengthening interventions that had helped in the control of malaria over the years and the introduction of new strategies.

_30i8738.jpg

Some participants in the conference

The new interventions, She pointed out, included mass drug administration, post-discharge malaria chemoprevention and scaling up malaria vaccination, among others.

Ms. Akrofi mentioned the conventional interventions to include larvae source management, distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets, research and indoor residual spraying, social behaviour change campaigns and vector surveillance.

She explained that malaria must not be neglected since the mosquitoes causing the ailment were still within our communities.

Ms. Akrofi called on Ghanaians to provide the National Malaria Elimination Programme  and other programmes such as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) with the needed data to take informed decisions and monitor the current interventions.

She underscored the need to obtain countrywide data on all mosquito surveillance , including data being churned by research institutions to better make informed decisions for Ghana.

_30i8744.jpg

Prof. Rofela Combey

The Head of the Department, Prof. Rofela Combey, in her remarks, commended the malaria control programme and its implementing partners for ensuring continuity of essential malaria interventions.

She said the country, however, needed to scale up the various malaria initiatives for more effective control programming towards pre-elimination.

A professor of Physics, Prof. P.K. Buah-Bassuah, in a remark, lauded the Department of Conservation Biology and Entomology for partnering with the Department of Physics to carry out the initiative.

DRIC Hosts Research Excellence Guest Lecture

28 Aug, 2023 By DIS

The Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) has held Research Excellence for staff and students of the University at the School of Graduate Studies Auditorium.

The guest speaker,  Prof. Isaac Luginaah, a distinguished professor and an alumnus of University of Cape Coast and  Western University, Canada spoke on the topic “Building Research Excellence Career/Institutions in the 21st Century: The Importance of Quality and Benchmarking.”

Prof.  Luginaah who has made field-defining theoretical and methodological contributions, addressing impacts of environmental hazards and vulnerabilities in population health, led the participants through the principles and importance of benchmarking, as well as some emerging contemporary issues.

Quoting Hammer and Stranton 1995, he explained that “benchmarking is the systemic process of searching for best practices, innovative ideas and highly effective operating procedures that lead to superior performance”.

“Benchmarking enables the identification of processes needing improvement, improvement of didactic, research, financial and administrative processes and a better adaptation of didactics and research to market demand.  Benchmarking is the secret to success,” he added.

Professor Luginaah, raised concerns on the scholarly focus on impact factor rankings of journals rather than focusing on research findings.

research_excellence3.jpg

Prof. Luginaah

Prof. Luginaah delivering a lecture

He criticised journal impact factors of been skewed adding that they could be manipulated and lack transparency.

However, the distinguished professor admitted that in recent times, impact factor had become one of the gold standards of measuring research quality.

He noted that there was a pressing need to improve the ways in which the output of scientific research was evaluated by funding agencies, academic institutions, and other parties.

Prof. Luginaah recommended that institutions should be explicit about their hiring criteria and that assessments should be based on scientific content rather than on only publication metrics.

He further encouraged the individual scholars to set their own quality and benchmarks which were based on practice and contextually relevant.

To that end, he challenged universities in Ghana to re-think the high in-breeding thus recruiting their own products as faculty and staff since it could stifle creativity and innovation.

Prof. Luginaah mentioned direct emulation and inappropriate context as some of the risk of benchmarking.

According to Prof. Luginaah  despite the challenges of benchmarking, if done right, could advance scientific knowledge, nurture intellectual curiosity, foster collaboration and networking, cause cross-pollination of ideas, build supportive networks and facilities and facilitate continuous improvement and innovations.

Prof. Doku giving his closing remarks.

The Director of DRIC, Prof. David Teye Doku, remarked that benchmarking would help in monitoring quality and increase productivity.

He emphasised that the University coyld increase productivity by paying attention to benchmarking.
