Fourth Research Awards and Grants

Fourth Research Awards and Grants (RAG) Ceremony 2018/2019 Academic Year

06 Sep, 2019 By clemence

Universities, through their extensive research capabilities and activities, have a critical role in providing the necessary knowledge, evidence-base, solutions and innovations. This suggests that universities occupy a unique position within society. Lately, universities are increasingly re-thinking their role in the twenty-first century and looking to be equally more responsive to societal needs and to become agents of change towards solving global challenges. With a broad emphasis on the creation and dissemination of knowledge, universities have long been powerful drivers of global, national and local innovation, economic development, and societal wellbeing. The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has embraced this mandate by crafting a research agenda which resonates with national (Agenda 2057) and supranational objectives (AU Agenda 2063, all 17 Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs). The UCC 2018-2022 Research Agenda is a blueprint of how our research work fits seamlessly with the broader vision of UCC and national development trajectory. The UCC Research Agenda also underscores the need for interdisciplinary collaboration within and with our external partners in our collective bid to comprehensively address the SDGs. The UCC Research Awards and Grants (RAG) ceremony is a platform to celebrate research activities closely aligned with the thematic areas in the Research Agenda and interests in departments, schools, and colleges across the University. The SDGs cover a wide range of complex social, economic, and environmental challenges that are evident, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Addressing them will require transformations in how our societies and economics function and how we interact with our planet. In this context, education, research, innovation and leadership will be essential in helping us address these challenges. UCC and allied institutions, with an extensive mandate around the creation and dissemination of knowledge and unique position within society, have critical roles to play in the achievement of the SDGs. The benefits that will accrue to UCC in engaging with the SDGs are myriad. It will help UCC to demonstrate its impact and relevance to society, capture demand for SDG-related education, build new partnerships, access new funding streams, and define UCC as a university that is responsible and globally aware.

UCC is committed to promoting research for national development by responding to the needs of industry and policy-makers and transforming livelihoods. In this regard, the University has instituted some interventions including an award scheme which is implemented annually by the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) to motivate and honour faculty members who have distinguished themselves in scholarly research or shown potential to engage in impact-oriented research.

In total, we received 90 applications for the 4th Call compared with 67 in the 3rd (2018) and 62 in the 2nd (2017) Call for applications for the 37 Research Support Grants (RSGs) on offer. This represents an increase of 34.3% in the number of applications received during the 3rd Call. For easy reference, the details of the 37 RSGs, according to the Call, are as follows:

  1. 15 each for Individual and Group-led RSGs – three (3) per category for each college;
  2. 5 for Inter-departmental RSG – one (1) per college; and
  3. 2 for Policy and practice-oriented RSG – University-wide.

This is the Fourth Research Awards and Grants (RAG) Ceremony, and it will provide a platform for research awardees and grantees to share their research output and experiences with policy-makers, academics, industrialists, civil society and the general public for the purpose of national socio-economic transformation.

Officials from University of Rhode Island Call on Vice-Chancellor

04 Sep, 2019 By louis Mensah
Three officials from the University of Rhode Island (URI), United States of America (USA) have paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah. The officials were the Senior Manager at the Coastal Resources Center, URI, Dr. Brian Crawford, Prof. Brietta Oaks from the College of Health Sciences, and the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, Dr. Gifty Ako-Adounvo. They were accompanied by the Chief-of-Party of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Sustainable Fisheries Management Project, Dr. Raymond Babanawo. The visit was aimed at strengthening the already existing collaboration between URI and UCC and to explore other areas the two institutions could work together. Dr. Brian Crawford said the collaboration between URI and UCC in the fisheries sector have been very beneficial to the country. He commended UCC especially members of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS) for their rich expertise in the fisheries and coastal management which is significantly contributing to the positive transformation of the fisheries sector in Ghana. He was confident that the two institutions would continue to work together to transform the fisheries sector and other areas of interest to both partners. The Head of DFAS, Dr. Noble Asare said the University had earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with URI to run dual degrees at the Ph. D level. He indicated that plans were far advanced for the implementation of the dual degrees. He stated that UCC through its School of Graduate Studies in collaboration with DFAS intends to pilot the dual degree with students coming through the African Centre of Excellence for Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) at the College of Environment and Life Sciences (CELS), URI. Dr. Asare also noted that some of the 15 Ph. D candidates selected by ACECoR have already expressed their interest and about five are expected to join the first cohort for the dual degrees. As per the arrangement, he noted that the students would spend two semesters at URI during the entire period of the programme. He assured that the two partners through their respective graduate schools would soon finalise all the modalities for the full implementation of the dual degrees to allow more students from both institutions to enrol in the programme. Responding, the Vice-Chancellor was grateful to URI for the good working relationship with UCC. He noted that UCC would continue to carry out its responsibilities to strengthen the collaboration. “I am happy that we have moved away from the paperwork to tackle the actuals and this will boost the profile of UCC & URI”. The Vice-Chancellor also indicated that the collaboration between UCC and URI was one of the best adding that “It has taken UCC very far and I must commend all the people from URI and UCC involved in this collaboration” He commended DFAS for providing great opportunities for its students through international collaborations.

CESED Holds University-Wide Entrepreneurship Course Training Workshop for Facilitators

04 Sep, 2019 By louis Mensah
The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise Development (CESED), UCC, has organised a training workshop for facilitators on the University-wide Entrepreneurship Course. Acknowledging the relevance of the programme, the Head, CESD, Dr. (Mrs.) Mavis S. Benneh Mensah, said the aims of this workshop are to engage the Entrepreneurship Facilitators on the University-wide Entrepreneurship Course by taking them through the basic training to ensure that we are all on the same level of in terms delivery of course contents, and more importantly, to achieve the purpose for which the course was set. She indicated that the workshop would also help to update new facilitators on the programme to understand the concept of the course and methods (pedagogy and andragogy) to deliver the course. Dr. Benneh Mensah explained that discussions would be based on the contents, evaluation and assessment of the course. “Review of contents for the update will also be deliberated on basis of the feedback from students and the demand of the job market,” she noted. Dr. Benneh Mensah urged the Facilitators to cooperate, contribute, and express their views to the success of the programme so as to get updated on the current teaching methods, evaluation and assessment systems. “Entrepreneurship is unique in terms of the purpose for teaching it, and we teach it mainly with the aim of preparing the student to be ready for the job market as well as to consider self-employment as possible carrier option,” she said. The Head added that in preparing students for the job market, it would require that they were entrepreneurial. She explained that the workshop was organised to share innovative ideas for teaching and assessing entrepreneurship; therefore, it would be good to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit in the students to start their own business as when given the resources.

DRIC and University of Western Ontario Hold Multi-Disciplinary Research Workshop

04 Sep, 2019 By louis Mensah
Stating the purpose of the workshop, the Director of DRIC, Prof. Frederick Ato Armah, explained that it was is to build capacities of faculty members and postgraduates students on Grantsmanship and Multi-Disciplinary Research Collaboration. He, therefore, urged participants to cooperate and contribute their quota to the success of the programme. The main speaker, who is an alumnus of UCC and a Canadian Research Chair in Health Geography at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, Prof. Isaac Luginaah, noted that it was always important to know the main purpose of a research proposal as a researcher. This, he explained that “It is to show that the problem you propose to investigate is significant enough to warrant the investigation; the method you plan to use is suitable and feasible; the results are likely to prove fruitful and will make an original significant contribution.” Speaking on the steps to identifying relevant agencies to secure funding, Prof. Luginaah advised that it was always good to contact peers, mentors in an institution or elsewhere; attend relevant conferences and search the web. He also highlighted on the need to meeting the preferences of funding agencies such as “innovation and significance; responsiveness to programme; care in writing proposal and capability to accomplish objectives.” Prof. Luginaah added that among the strategies for success in grant writing included reading instructions and following them obsessively because a proposal was an instrument of persuasion. According to him, “an effective proposal should have a good idea or compelling project; address a significant problem; a clear description of the research activities and a good fit with funding agency’s priorities.” The Speaker cautioned that in terms of methodology, the feasibility of the study should be proved. He advised that research proposals were always ranked in intellectual merit, capability, feasibility and broader impact, and therefore, the vision of proposals should be crafted to match funding priorities. Stressing on budget and cost-effectiveness, he said, “Be realistic about your budget and estimate costs as accurately as possible.” Prof. Luginaah also spoke on the need for career development and academic progression and indicated that there were challenges associated with them and some of these could be: time-intensive, teaching loads, funding problems and increased administrative responsibilities. Speaking on the strategies for success in publishing peer-reviewed journal articles, he noted, “It must be understood that science involves negotiation and persuasion, and all scientific work is subject to change as new knowledge emerges, hence we cannot be subsumed in what we have always known.” Prof. Luginaah mentioned that the characteristics of successful academic researchers would largely depend on the balance of personal preparation, characteristics, focus and effort; assistance and support from others; the local environment; mentors and tending to communicate with others and network. However, he added that “To succeed involves hard work and a little bit of aggression.” Addressing unsuccessful publishing problems, he stated that some researchers have failed based on lack of effort, illegitimate work demand and procrastination. He also advised that to work in multi-disciplinary teams, each project team should consist of a minimum, natural scientists, social scientists and humanities, and stakeholders. The Speaker appealed to researchers that, "Respect, working on time, asking for help and being truthful during budgeting, are the essential keys to working in multi-disciplinary teams." Prof. Frederick Ato Armah commended Prof. Isaac Luginaah for his motivational and thought-provoking presentation which has been an eye-opening and enlightenment. He urged the participants to pay heed to whatever information, guidance and directions that have been given, so as to master the right procedure for securing grants; writing research proposals as interdisciplinary-/multi-disciplinary teams. He was hopeful that the workshop would go a long way to stimulate researchers to work hard to find solutions to challenges and issues confronting humanity, development, society, and the environment. The Assistant Registrar, DRIC, Mr. Alfred Ghartey, Junior Assistant Registrar, Mr. Matthew Quaidoo, CoDE, Research Fellows, lecturers and postgraduate students were present at the programme.
