UCC Holds Matriculation for Fresh Distance Education Students

08 Jan, 2016 By louis Mensah

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) College of Distance Education (CoDE) has held the 15th matriculation ceremony for fresh students admitted to pursue education and business related programmes by distance for the 2015/2016 academic year.

A total of 18, 830 students were admitted nationwide with 14,206 offering Diploma and Post-Diploma programmes in Education and 4,624 pursuing business courses which include Marketing and Management Studies. Out of the total number of students who gained admission 10, 634 were male and 8, 205 female.

The matriculation ceremony was held in zones for students in the various regions in the country. The ceremony for the Northern Zone comprising the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions was held at the Tamale Sports Stadium while the Middle Zone which includes the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Eastern Regions converged at the Kumasi Sports Stadium for the ceremony. Students in the Southern Zone which is made up of Central, Volta, Greater Accra and the Western Regions would had their matriculation on UCC campus.

Addressing the students , the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole pointed out that gender parity was gaining grounds in UCC. This according to him was evident in the increasing number of female students admitted each year.

Prof. Kuupole also noted that although the University had raised its pass mark for admissions, many students were making effort to enroll on the UCC Distance Education programme. The rationale, he said, was to ensure that the University did not compromise on its quality. He gave the assurance that the university would continue to uphold its high academic standards in order to ensure that graduates of UCC meet the needs of society. He further indicated that due to the premium the university placed on quality, graduates from UCC continued to be the preferred choice on the job market.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the university was seriously embarking on transformational and expansion of policies to enhance distance learning by opening more study centres nationwide. He mentioned the opening of new study centres at Datus School Complex in Accra, Tema and Kasoa; West Africa Senior High School in Greater Accra Region. Others include Begoro Presbyterian SHS in the Eastern Region; Sefwi Dabieso SHS in Western Region and Manso Abore-Mansoman SHS in Ashanti Region. He added that there had been an increase in enrolment in most of the established centres including the introduction of new disciplines.

Touching on e-Learning facilities for distance students, Prof. Kuupole said over 20 of the modules had been reviewed and digitalised. He assured the students that they would soon access the modules on their iPads.

In addition, he noted, the University had also expanded its graduate study centres for distance students, pointing out that the University would continue to be the blazing light in distance education in the country and beyond.

The Vice-Chancellor urged the students to take their studies seriously and also attend face-to-face sessions regularly to enable them excel in their examinations.

WHAT IS CEREBROSPINAL MENINGITIS (CSM)?
Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) is a very serious infection that can sometimes lead to fatal consequences.
CSM is an acute inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and the spinal cord (meninges). This condition is classified as a medical emergency. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) about 10 -15 % of patients diagnosed with CSM die (http://www.who.int/en/).

CAUSES OF CSM
Meningitis can be caused by bacterial, viral, fungi and even chemicals. In our environment, the leading cause is bacterial.  Bacterial meningitis is caused by various bacterial pathogens. Neisseria meningitides, Streptococcus pneumonias and Haemophilus influenza type B are the triad responsible for over 80% of all cases of bacterial meningitis.
Under certain environmental conditions such as dry weather, dusty winds, high temperatures during the day and cold temperatures  at night (especially during the harmattan season from October to March), the virulence of these otherwise naturally existing microorganisms increases, causing sporadic outbreaks of cerebrospinal meningitis. People living in overcrowded conditions, poorly ventilated houses and generally poor sanitary conditions are very vulnerable to respiratory infections, and this encourages the growth and survival of the bacteria.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION
Bacterial and viral meningitis are contagious and can be transmitted through tiny droplets of respiratory secretions from infected person during close contact such as kissing, coughing or sneezing on someone, as well as sharing of eating or drinking utensils. Carrier rates may be as high as 25% during endemic periods and as high as 50% during epidemics. Incubation periods vary from 2 to 10 days.
Anyone can contract meningitis, but people whose bodies have trouble fighting infections are more susceptible.

SYMPTOMS OF CSM
Meningitis can progress rapidly. One must seek medical care quickly when you experience the following symptoms:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Severe headache
  • Neck stiffness
  • Photophobia (increased sensitivity to light)
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion and convulsions

In babies, there may be bulging of the anterior fontanelle (soft part of the head)Although sometimes CSM can end up in fatality, most often it can be successfully treated with intravenous antibiotics. Early treatment can help prevent serious long-term consequences such as deafness, blindness, epileptic seizures and brain damage.

PREVENTION
You can prevent CSM and avoid possible complications by practicing effective prevention. As preventive measures one need to:
Avoid overcrowded places.
Avoid direct contact with people coughing or sneezing.
Allow adequate ventilation in our houses.
Seek immediate medical help when you notice any of the symptoms of CSM.
PLEASE STAY HEALTHY !!!

Responsible Leadership Comes with a Sense of Duty

21 Dec, 2015 By louis Mensah

The Winneba Area Head of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Emmanuel Offei Ankrah-Badu has observed that Ghana can achieve optimum development if citizens become very responsible in whatever endeavor they find themselves. He noted that the country has been lacking behind in terms of development due to mediocrity, high level of corruption, lawlessness and other social ills in the Ghanaian society. Delivering a sermon during thanksgiving service for Prof. George K. T. Oduro and Rev. Prof. Seth Asare-Danso at the Bethel Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Cape Coast, Apostle Ankrah-Badu said responsible leadership must come with a sense of duty, accountability and excellence to rise above mediocrity. Prof. Oduro was recently elected to take the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor effective January 2016 for a three year term whilst Rev. Prof. Asare-Danso was also promoted to Associate Professor. Apostle Ankrah-Badu advised citizens to accept responsibility for their actions and desist from blaming others.  Present at the service were some family members of Prof. Oduro and Rev. Prof. Asare-Danso.

Electricity Section Honours Two Retired Staff

21 Dec, 2015 By louis Mensah

The Electricity Section of the University of Cape Coast has honoured two retired staff of the Section for their long dedicated service to the University at a ceremony on campus. The two staff, Mr. Patrick Kwofie and Mr. Robert Sam served the University for 35 years and 39 years respectively. Each of them received a table top refrigerator and cash as their end of service package. Speaking at the function, the Head of Electricity Section, Mr. Joseph Wilberforce Ansah expressed gratitude to the two retired staff for their commitment to duty and also serving as a source of inspiration to the younger staff. He explained that the Electricity Section began this awards ceremony for retired staff in 1998 to express appreciation to them and also motivate active staff to work very hard. Mr. Ansah said that it was through such a ceremony that the University decided to present items such as refrigerators, television and furniture to retired staff. “The former, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Addow-Obeng attended a ceremony to award retired staff of the Electricity Section and he was surprised that we were giving them refrigerators and furniture, so he tasked the Welfare Section to also adopt this practice and since then staff going on retirement are given these items,” he explained. The two retired staff thanked the head and staff of the section for the honour done them. They encouraged them to be united and work towards the development of the University.
