Statement on the withdrawal of students from the Colleges of Education in Ghana at the end of the 2014/2015 academic year by the Professional Board of Institute of Education, University Of Cape Coast.

The Institute of Education of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) was established in 1965 as “School of Education” in the then University College of Cape Coast to function as the foremost institution charged with the mandate to maintain continual improvement of teacher education in Ghana by collaborating with stakeholders in education including the Ministry of Education (MOE), Teacher Education Division (TED) of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Principals Conference (PRINCOF) etc. In 1973, the name “School of Education” was changed by the then Senate of the University to “Institute of Education”.

A major objective of the Institute of Education, among others, is to develop and periodically review the curricula of the various programmes in the Teacher Training Colleges (now Colleges of Education) as well as assess students and award them certificates and diplomas.

As the main examinations body for Colleges of Education in Ghana, the Institute of Education currently examines and awards diploma certificates to students of the thirty eight (38) public and eight (8) private Colleges of Education in Ghana.

The Church Should Resource its Educational Institutions

09 Dec, 2015 By louis Mensah

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole has entreated churches that have established educational institutions to adequately provide them with the needed financial and logistic support to effectively and efficiently deliver quality education to their students.

Prof. Kuupole advised leaders of churches to avoid incessant interference in the running of their educational institutions but rather provide the enabling environment for them to operate.

The Vice-Chancellor made this call during the 7th Congregation of the Ghana Baptist University College, Kumasi (GBUC) an affiliate of the University of Cape Coast.

Prof. Kuupole commended GBUC for the high standards of academic work the institution had put in place stressing that “GBUC is one of the best affiliate institutions in terms of adherence to affiliation guidelines and the National Accreditation Board (NAB) regulations.”  In view of this, the Vice-Chancellor prayed that the GBUC would soon be granted a Presidential Charter to be on its own feet to be autonomous degree awarding institution provided they maintain the high standards.

Touching on the contribution of private universities to the educational sector of the country, Prof. Kuupole pointed out that “the 10 public universities in Ghana take less than 50% of qualified applicants with the rest being absorbed by the private universities in the country.” He therefore commended GBUC for contributing towards the expansion of quality tertiary education to the teeming qualified students in the country. He gave the assurance that UCC would continue to help GBUC to succeed in its quest to produce quality human capital needed for national development.

Delivering an address at the ceremony, the Deputy President of GBUC, thanked UCC for the good mentorship the University College continues to receive. He promised the Vice-Chancellor that GBUC would always learn best practices to position the University College as a centre of excellence. He announced that they have received approval from NAB to begin a Diploma and Bachelor of Education in English which are all affiliated to UCC. He also mentioned the Nursing programme which had already been approved and awaiting clearance from the Nurses and Midwifery Council.

The Vice-Chancellor later conferred degrees on 612 graduands of GBUC at the ceremony.

The Quest to Find the Truth Has Always Underpinned Autopsy Practice- Dr. Akakpo

09 Dec, 2015 By louis Mensah

The Head, Department of Pathology, School of Medical Sciences of the College of Health and Allied Sciences (CoHAS), University of Cape Coast, Dr. Kafui P. Akakpo has stated that the quest to find the truth has always underpinned autopsy practice.

“The quest to find the truth has always driven autopsy practice and will continue to be the reason for autopsy”.

Speaking at a Public Lecture at the University, under the topic “Autopsy Practice in Ghana, the Past, Present and Future” the pathologists indicated that the introduction of autopsy practice into medicine has opened the door for understanding of disease process. “Hitherto, physicians spent years taking notes by externally examining patients without understanding the changes that occurred in the body organs as a result of the effect of diseases in these various organs”.

According to Dr. Akakpo, autopsy has also been an integral part of law and has been of immense value in the investigation of both natural and unnatural deaths. For this reason, a lot of autopsies, which include both clinical or academic and medico-legal autopsies, are done each year in this country. In the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for example, 250 autopsies are carried out each year with 87% of that been medico-legal as well as 52% of these deaths being young adults, he stated.

Dr. Akakpo’s lecture explored the history of autopsy practice the world-over, looked at relationship between autopsy practice and religion, the laws that govern autopsy practice in Ghana and the key players involved in the entreprise. He said it was important to use people who have died to study diseases to serve as basis for predicting what will happen in the future by way of diseases and deaths.

The lecturer therefore urged the general public to report all unnatural deaths to the police for investigations to be carried out “since autopsy answers the final question why did life pass from a specific human being. It is to establish the cause and manner of death of an identified deceased which goes to benefit the relations, physician and society”.

The Consultant Pathologist, recommended that in order to improve the practice of autopsy, measures must be taken to establish a dedicated forensic service, fashioning out of practice guide and a review of the existing law guiding the practice since it has become “too old”.
