DAPQA shares Best Practices with Quality Assurance Unit of GIMPA

06 Apr, 2022 By DIS

The Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (DAPQA), University of Cape Coast has shared best

practices on quality assurance with staff of the Quality Assurance Unit from Ghana Institute of

Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

In his welcome remarks at an interaction with the officials from GIMPA, the Director of

DAPQA, Prof. Emmanuel Kofi Gyimah, noted that UCC was noted for its quality academic

standards in Ghana and Africa. He indicated that the current ranking of UCC as the number

one in Ghana, West Africa and fourth in Africa, as well as the number one in research

influence globally was a reflection of the total quality assurance measures the University had

adopted.

“Total quality assurance permeates every aspect of the University’s activities, thus,

teaching, learning, research, governance and administrative services" he added.

Prof. Gyimah said the visit would go a long way to establish a cordial relationship between

the two institutions to enhance total quality assurance activities.

On his part, the Head of Quality Assurance Unit of GIMPA, Dr. Lord Mawuko-Yevugah,

thanked DAPQA for the warm reception. He explained that the visit was to familiarise

themselves with the operations of DAPQA at UCC and learn best practices that would help to

strengthen quality assurance at GIMPA.

“We are here to explore ways of making our unit more vibrant and recognised locally and internationally,” he stated.

He pointed out that UCC and GIMPA shared a lot in common and was hopeful that the interactive session would open

other avenues to exchange knowledge and adopt best practices.

Presenting on quality assurance at UCC, a Research Fellow at DAPQA, Dr. Ishmael Kwabla

Hlovor, explained that UCC had adopted a total quality management approach and considered

quality as “fit for purpose”. He indicated that at the core of UCC’s total quality management

was people’s programme and place. “People refers to internal and external stakeholders in

quality management process. Programmes represent the processes, procedures activities

within the institution including curricular design, teaching and learning, governance systems,

leadership and management functions, student support services and student admissions. Place

stands for space and facilities,” he explained.

Touching on the mandate of DAPQA, Dr. Hlovor said the Directorate was responsible

for ensuring that performance standards set for all aspects of the University’s activities were

appropriate and relevant. He said the Directorate also monitored and evaluated the

University’s strategic plan; monitored quality management activities in all implementation

Units and periodically updated the Vice-Chancellor on the overall quality status of the

University. Another mandate, he mentioned, was providing advice and guidance to

implementation units on the execution of quality management activities among others.

Dr. Hlovor concluded his presentation by indicating that the Directorate played a key

role in quality monitoring and evaluation, however, the Colleges, Faculties, Schools,

Departments and other units of the University collectively spearheaded quality standards and

improvements.

Present at the interaction session were heads of unit, research fellows and administrative staff DAPQA.

UCC Chancellor, Sir Sam Jonah, opening the D-Hub.

UCC Launches Design Thinking and Innovation Hub

06 Apr, 2022 By DIS

A freshly-created hub to support and motivate students to become successful job creators and entrepreneurs has been launched at the University of Cape Coast, UCC.

Design Thinking and Innovation Hub, abbreviated as D-Hub, an initiative under the Office of the Vice Chancellor, seeks to develop change agents in its community, stimulate the establishment and growth of start-up firms and other businesses.

The initiative is also aimed at helping to solve societal problems through design thinking, technology transfer, diffusion of innovation and continuous improvement.

Speaking at the launch, Chancellor of the University, Sir (Dr.) Sam Esson Jonah, indicated that the establishment of the D-Hub would deepen academia and industry collaboration to groom students into skilled business men and women “with the right focus and business ethics to make them succeed in their endeavors.”

He said Ghana stood to benefit immensely when students were prepared with the right attitude to work and an entrepreneurial mindset, stressing the aforesaid would enable them excel in their various fields of endeavour.

The Chancellor, who was the keynoter at the launch, lauded the determination of University Management and faculty to think outside the box to introduce initiatives that would not allow graduates join the bandwagon of job seekers.

He emphasized that the design thinking attitude was the cornerstone to train students who were being prepared for jobs that had not been yet created.

Presently, he noted, universities all over the world were working assiduously to produce useful global citizens to practically inculcate the 21st century skills into them. He was however quick to add that ‘most of these students and institutions were helping young students to put their design thinking tools into practice in the real world by making them spend time with business owners and project managers  to help optimise their services to clients’

The Chancellor underlined that the D-Hub could be a conduit through which creative and enthusiastic students from the senior high level, UCC, as well as lecturers who had come out with research findings of industrial value, could be incubated and groomed to develop business principles that could solve problems in all sectors of the economy.

He encouraged young entrepreneurs not to give up when they encountered difficulties or failures in their careers. He indicated that failure was part of the journey to a successful career.  He added that the D-Hub would unearth and discover talents in multidisciplinary spheres on the University campus.

Sir (Dr) Sam Jonah announced that D-Hub had five steps, namely ‘empathy, defining the problem, ideating solutions, prototyping a solution and testing a solution’. These, he observed, would ‘serve as avenue for many new ideas to be born in the midst of competition of students, staff and community’.

He opined that technological innovations churned out from the Hub would increase accessibility and national development along with government flagship programmes.

The Chancellor envisaged a collaboration between the Hub, business community and government in the areas of technological development where incubates could develop new technological innovations to augment scientific discoveries.

He urged management to sustain the D-Hub to become a model worthy of emulation across other public and private campuses within and outside Ghana.

Chairing the event, the Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Obeng Mireku, threw the unflinching support of Council behind the vision of the Vice-Chancellor to make UCC an ‘Entrepreneurial University’.

He was of the belief that the creation of D-Hub would contribute to the national agenda of creating entrepreneurial minded students who would be job creators and not job seekers.

Prof Obeng Mireku reminded beneficiaries of the Hub to handle with utmost care the logistics and facilities of the Hub to prolong their lifespan.

UCC: 114 students inducted at 9th Faculty of Law Roll Call

31 Mar, 2022 By DIS

The Faculty of Law, University of Cape Coast has held its ninth (9th) Roll Call ceremony which saw one hundred and fourteen students (114) being inducted.

The event was also to recognize and appreciate students who performed creditably in their academic work.

A Supervising High Court judge in the Western Region, HL Justice Sedina Agbemava, administered the oath to the fresh students.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, who chaired the event, advised the students to plan their activities and stay conscious of time while pursuing their academics on campus.

Prof. Boohene also encouraged them to exude the core values of the Faculty – integrity, diligence and service. She urged them to take cognizance of the ever evolving nature of the world and embrace entrepreneurship.

Keynoter at the ceremony, Mr. Anthony Forson Jnr, the immediate past president of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), urged the students to find mentors to guide them in their chosen profession. He noted that solely focusing on academic brilliance could not guarantee their being called to the bar.

"Therefore", he added, "right from your students’ days, you must associate with a lawyer."

Mr. Anthony Forson Jnr, who completed UCC in 1989, advised the students to discard the notion that the practice of law was synonymous with riches.

"If you are in this profession purely for monetary gains, I can assure you that you are lost" he noted.

He counseled them to jealously guard the nobility and dignity of the profession, which was bequeathed to the current crop of practitioners and hand over to succeeding generations ‘in our pristine condition as our fathers left it.’

He mentioned mutual respect, judicial comportment, honesty and integrity as the key ingredients of the profession. He tasked them to be creative, innovative, life-long learners and develop personal and social skills.

The Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Obeng Mireku, in his message mentioned that the study of law required the absolute attention of students. He said it was normal for a section of the public to brand them as bookworms, saying such comments should rather motivate them to higher heights.

UCC Vice-Chancellor interacts with alumni in Washington DC

29 Mar, 2022 By DIS

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has held an interactive session with alumni of the University in Washington DC in the United States of America.

The meeting, convened under the auspices of the Institutional Advancement Office-UCC, was aimed at reconnecting and strengthening the linkages between the University and its alumni.

The Vice-Chancellor announced at the meeting measures adopted to lessen the plight of alumni living abroad in their quest to acquire essential documents from the University.

To this end, he indicated the creation of the ‘Help Service Desk’ by the Institutional Advancement Office and the Directorate of Academic Affairs to assist alumni in the acquisition of transcripts, attestation letters, amongst other vital documents until the online application system was ready.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was rapturously welcomed, seized the opportunity to invite them to the International UCC Home Coming Days which have been slated for 26th to 28th of September, 2022.

Accordingly, he called for the support of the alumni to embark on the various fund raising activities branded as ‘60 @ 60 contributions, lay a brick’ and other individual sponsorship events towards the legacy project- the building of the Biomedical and Clinical Research Laboratory for UCC.

“The Biomedical and Clinical Research Center would undertake medically related research of the western corridors of the country” Prof. Boampong added.

He told the gathering that plans were far advanced to launch the Design Thinking and Innovative Hub (D-Hub) on April 5 this year.

The facility, Prof. Boampong explained, would provide students the opportunity to experience practical entrepreneurial training. He stressed his desire to see inculcated in students of UCC an entrepreneurial mindset to address the problems associated with graduate unemployment, job creation and economic growth.

Speaking further, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the enviable successes chalked by the University, mentioning the recent Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which saw UCC place first in Ghana and West Africa, as well as being adjudged the first University in terms research influence globally, amongst others.

During the two-hour interactive session, alumni were also given the chance to ask questions that bothered them on the operations of the University.

The alumni, adorned in UCC paraphernalia, were enthused by the platform afforded them to get their voices heard towards pushing the holistic growth of the University.

The Vice-Chancellor is scheduled to meet dozens more of UCC alumni at Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday April 3.
