The Nigerian High Commissioner To Ghana Visits UCC

The Nigerian High Commissioner Ambassador Ibok-Ete Ekwe has embarked on an official visit to University. Present to welcome him were the Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Rosemond Boohene, the Registrar, Mr. Jeff Teye E. Onyame, and the Dean of the Office of International Relations, Prof. Kwaku Adutwum Ayim Boakye.

 

The High Commissioner and the Pro Vice-Chancellor exchanged gifts to strengthen their relationship. Both parties were looking forward for future collaboration and mutual benefit.

 

Members of the Nigerian delegation included honourable J. M. Holma, Mrs. Bola Amilee and some members of the Nigerian community in Ghana.

7th Oil And Gas Public Lecture Series And Awards Ceremony

The GNPC Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Commerce at the Institute for Oil and Gas Studies, University of Cape Coast, in collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has held the 7th Oil and Gas Public Lecture Series and Awards Ceremony at the School of Medical Science Auditorium during which eight postgraduate students were awarded.

 

The post graduate students who took part in the GNPC Academic Enrichment Programme were from the School of Economics, School of Business and the Institute for Oil and Gas Studies all in the University of Cape Coast, underwent a nine- month intensive Academic Enrichment Programme in Petroleum and Energy Studies sponsored by GNPC under the auspices of its sustainability and External Relations Division. The Enrichment Programme is a precursor to approved post graduate programme in Petroleum and Energy Studies at the Institute of Oil and Gas Studies.

 

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, in his address, commended the GNPC for collaborating with the University for the construction of a building complex worth five million US dollars. He indicated that upon completion, the building will host offices of the Faculty of Law, the Institute for Oil and Gas Studies, and the Chair of the Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Commerce.

 

The main speaker Prof. Emeritus Omowumi O. Iledare, delivered a lecture on the topic of “The Dawn of Global Energy Systems Transformation: Strategic Thinking and Transitioning Options”. He emphasized on the importance of strategic transitioning which would involve the combined use of renewable energy and fossil fuels to ensure energy security and equity as well as environmental sustainability in the African continent.

UCC@60 Anniversary Planning Committee Calls On Chancellor

A 10-member delegation of the UCC@60 Anniversary Planning Committee led by the Chairman, Prof. L. K. Sam Amoah has paid a courtesy call on the Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Sir (Dr). Sam Esson Jonah, at his office in Accra. 

 

The Chairman informed the Chancellor that the Committee was in Accra to brief him on preparations towards the celebrations and the progress made so far.

 

He also took the opportunity to solicit the Chancellor’s inputs and support to ensure a successful celebrations.

 

The Chairman informed the Chancellor that after careful deliberations, the Committee had adopted *"60 years of Quality Higher Education: Expanding the Frontiers" as the theme for the anniversary.   

 

He further outlined the inauguration of the Planning Committee and sub-Committees, and the adoption of a Logo as some of the key successes chocked so far. Prof. Sam-Amoah hinted that the official launch of the anniversary had been slated for mid-April and that the date would be sent to the Chancellor as soon as it was confirmed.

 

The Chairperson presented the Chancellor with a copy of the proposed plan of activities for the celebrations for his perusal.

 

In his response, the Chancellor expressed his excitement that the University had chocked 60 years and also at the impending celebrations.

 

He reiterated the importance of anniversary celebrations as avenues for showcasing and sharing the ground-breaking achievements of institutions. He therefore charged the Committee to take the task seriously and work assiduously to deliver a successful celebration.

 

He advised the Committee to use the celebrations to build a comprehensive database of Alumni and leverage on that to solicit support from various year groups. He also recommended undertaking a project to commemorate the milestone the University has achieved.

 

The Chancellor welcomed the idea of a Chancellor's Day and requested for more details for him to make his inputs.

 

He was very confident that the Fund Raising Committee would be able to raise the required funds for the celebrations. He tasked the Committee to adopt innovative ways to raise the needed funds for the celebrations.

 

Concluding, the Chancellor thanked the Chairman and Members of the delegation for the visit.

University Receives Streetlights and Led Bulbs from Government

The Ministry of Energy, has presented an assortment of street-lighting equipment to the University for installation on campus. The donation was as a result of a special arrangement by the Vice-Chancellor to ensure that the campus was well illuminated to either prevent crime or reduce it to the minimum. The items were presented by officials from the Materials Management Unit of the Ministry of Energy and were received by staff from the Electricity Section and the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of the University.

The items received were 800 units of 150W LED streetlights with complete arms, photocell, bolts, nuts and washers, 1500 units of 13W LED bulbs, 1000 units of 9W LED bulbs and 1500 units of 6W LED bulbs.

Delegation from the Office of Grants and Research (OGR) at the KNUST Pays Familiarisation Visit To DRIC-UCC

On Tuesday, 8th February, 2022 a delegation from the Office of Grants and Research (OGR) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi visited the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC), University of Cape Coast. The team from OGR was led by Prof. Philip Antwi-Agyei, the Director of OGR. Other members of the team were Dr. Nadia Tagoe, Grants, Research Manager and Mrs. Amanda Owusu-Asare, Assistant Registrar.

The purpose of the visit was to familiarize themselves with aspects of the operations at DRIC which could be of immense benefit to OGR in particular and KNUST, at large. The relationship between the two sister offices dates as far back as 2014. In August 2016, staff from DRIC-UCC visited OGR KNUST to study the operations of the Research Office.

During an interaction with the team from OGR, the Director of DRIC-UCC, Professor Frederick Ato Armah welcomed the OGR team to the University and DRIC. He noted that, it was humbling to be sharing experiences with a sister institution which once mentored DRIC-UCC.

Prof. David Teye Doku emphasized the need for an Institutional-wide research agenda and how it could be developed to drive research at both universities. Prof. Doku emphasised that a research agenda must align with institutional, national, regional and global developmental agenda in order to be relevant and attract funding. He further stressed that it is essential to employ a bottom-up approach in the development of a university’s research agenda to ensure ownership and ease its implementation. Dr. (Mrs) Millicent Abigail Aning-Agyei, a Research Fellow at DRIC shared one important operational strategy of DRIC with the team from OGR, which is the use of Action Plans. The Action Plans are developed every academic year after series of meetings and broad stakeholder consultations.

Dr. Samuel Asiedu-Owusu, a Senior Research Fellow at DRIC later shared experiences with the OGR team with respect to how the Research Awards and Grants Ceremony is organized here at UCC beginning with the rolling-out of a Call to the RAG ceremony and how Grantees are managed post the RAG ceremony to ensure successful completion of funded projects. He exposed the OGR team to the institutional web application known as UCC Research Output Monitor and Evaluator (UCCROME) which serves as an internal diagnostic tool for management decision-making. Dr Owusu called on the OGR to take serious interest in the activities of Institutional Review Board/ Ethics Committees at KNUST since ethics underpin every research.

In his closing remarks, the Director of OGR, Prof. Philip Antwi-Agyei expressed gratitude to the Director of DRIC and the entire staff at the Directorate for the warm reception and openness to share what could be described as institutional secrets. He noted that their visit was fulfilling and looked forward to more engagements in future. He ended by commending the University for its sterling performance in the 2022 Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking.

The Director of DRIC in his concluding statements thanked the OGR team for choosing DRIC for their study tour. He observed that it was time for institutions to move away from competition to collaboration since that was the surest way to making global impact and building the capacities of staff in the respective organizations.

A.      VACANCIES

The Governing Council of the University of Cape Coast, a public University in Ghana established by an Act of Parliament, announces, for the information of the academic ccommunity and the general public, vacancies for the following positions:

1.      Provost, College of Distance Education

2.      Provost, College of Education Studies

3.      Provost, College of Humanities and Legal Studies

4.      Provost, College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (CANS)

 

B.      THE POSITION

The Provost is the academic and administrative Head of a College. He/She is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for providing leadership to the College and for maintaining as well as promoting the efficiency and good order of the College in accordance with policies and procedures prescribed by the University of Cape Coast Law, 1992 (PNDCL 278) and the University of Cape Coast Statutes.

 

C.      QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

 

1.      PROVOST, COLLEGE OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

An applicant must:

❖         be an internationally acclaimed scholar of professorial status or equivalent status in an analogous institution;

❖         be a distinguished scholar with capacity to motivate and direct staff;

❖         Exhibit high sense of industry, leadership qualities as well as organizational skills and must be above reproach;

❖         possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

❖         be visionary, business-oriented and able to establish rapport between industry and the University for a common purpose;

❖         be sober with maturity and drive for sound and impartial judgment;

❖         be able to attract grants and funds for research, teaching and development activities in the College;

❖         be an individual of stature and integrity;

❖            have a number of years of experience in heutagogy and pedagogical best practices in distance learning, quality assurance in distance learning and university management and administration.

 

2.      PROVOST, COLLEGE OF EDUCATION STUDIES

An applicant must:

❖         be an internationally acclaimed scholar of professorial status or equivalent status in an analogous institution;

❖         be a distinguished scholar with capacity to motivate and direct staff;

❖         exhibit high sense of industry, leadership qualities and organizational skills and must be above reproach;

❖         possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

❖         be visionary, business-oriented and able to establish rapport between industry and the University for a common purpose;

❖         be sober with maturity and drive for sound and impartial judgment;

❖         be able to attract grants and funds for research and development activities in the College;

❖         be an individual of stature and integrity;

❖         have background in education;

❖         have a number of years of experience in university management and administration.

 

3.      PROVOST, COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND LEGAL STUDIES

An applicant must:

❖     be an internationally acclaimed scholar of professorial status or equivalent status in an analogous institution;

❖     be a distinguished scholar with capacity to motivate and direct staff;

❖     exhibit high sense of industry, leadership qualities and organizational skills and must be above reproach;

❖     possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

❖     be visionary, business-oriented and able to establish rapport between industry and the University for a common purpose;

❖     be sober with maturity and drive for sound and impartial judgment;

❖     be able to attract grants and funds for research and development activities in the College;

❖     be an individual of stature and integrity;

❖     have background in education, arts, social sciences or law;

❖     have a number of years of experience in university management and administration.

 

4.      PROVOST, COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL SCIENCES

An applicant must:

❖         be an internationally acclaimed scholar of professorial status or equivalent status in an analogous institution;

❖         be a distinguished scholar with capacity to motivate and direct staff;

❖         exhibit a high sense of industry, leadership qualities and organizational skills and must be above reproach;

❖         possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

❖         be visionary, business-oriented and able to establish rapport between industry and the University for a common purpose;

❖         be sober with maturity and drive for sound and impartial judgment;

❖         be able to attract grants and funds for research and development activities in the College;

❖         be an individual of stature and integrity;

❖         have background in the sciences;

❖         have a number of years of experience in university management and administration.

 

D.      TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

·      The appointment, which is full-time, is for a term of three years renewable, upon completion, for a second consecutive term of three years only, subject to application and interview.

·      The applicant should be able to serve a full three-year term of office before attaining the compulsory retiring age of 60 years.

·      A successful candidate, who is not a Faculty Member of University of Cape Coast prior to the appointment, may opt to be a Faculty Member after serving the term(s) if that is before his/her sixtieth (60th) birthday.

·      The ssuccessful aapplicant shall be expected to take office on 1st August, 2022.

 

E.      SALARY AND FRINGE BENEFITS
