CCDRR trains Pupil Teachers on handling Handwriting and Reading Challenges in Basic Schools

14 Apr, 2021 By DIS

The Centre for Child Development Research and Referral (CCDRR) of the University of Cape Coast has held a workshop to train teachers from Primary Schools in Cape Coast.

The training workshop was held to equip the teachers to identify and assist pupils with reading and handwriting challenges in the classroom. It was on the theme “Effective Teaching Strategies for Handling Children with Reading and Handwriting Difficulties in an Inclusive Setting.”

The participating Schools were Ola Presbyterian School, Archbishop Amissah Catholic School, Okyeso Catholic Basic School, and Emmanuel Methodist Academy.

The Headmaster of Ola Presbyterian School addressed the teachers saying, "The Ministry of Education, through the National Teaching Council (NTC), has developed a framework called the National Teachers Standards to guide training for the teaching profession." He explained that the National Teachers Standards necessitated that a teacher should improve his professional abilities through lifelong learning and continuous personal development. “To do this, you must identify the knowledge gap you have and train to fill that gap. You must also stretch yourselves beyond the normal textbooks we use in our schools to assessing the library and the internet, as well as consulting experienced practitioners in the field.” He noted that the workshop was important as it formed part of continuous professional development.

Mrs. Martha-Pearl Okai, an Educational Specialist with the Department of Education and Psychology at UCC, presented strategies for teaching children with reading and handwriting problems. She indicated that based on numerous researches, it had become clear that most children with learning disabilities had reading problems. She also noted that research had indicated that most children in the basic schools had problems with reading.

Mrs. Okai further noted that interactions with some of the teachers also indicated that handwriting seemed to be a challenge with most of their pupils in the classroom. She went ahead to demonstrate how teachers can assist pupils with reading and handwriting problems.

Mrs. Rebecca Affrah, from CCDRR-UCC, also briefly presented on COVID-19 and its impact on learners with disability. She pointed out that deaf and blind children faced an enormous challenge in communication due to the social distancing protocol. She said they required tactile language where they needed touch to communicate with others. She explained that such children with disabilities including autism and behavioral disorders, needed more attention due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She urged the participants to teach their pupils with a disability how to wear the nose mask, practice safe distancing, hand washing, and hand sanitizing. She suggested that the teachers should use creative, and attractive-looking posters that encourage their pupils to practice the COVID protocols.

COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL SCIENCES HOSTS SustInAFRICA PROJECT MEETING

09 Apr, 2021 By DIS

The College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has hosted a two-day meeting for the African Participants of the Sustainable Intensification of African farming in North and West Africa (SustInAFRICA) Project.

The purpose of the meeting was to meet with all the African Stakeholders and officially begin the SustInAFRICA project. Welcoming participants on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Moses Joojo Eghan, Provost of College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. explained that due to Africa’s growing population, the related sharp food demand, and the changing climate, it had become critically essential to retain food security in Africa. He expressed that the SustInAFRICA project was timely because food security has become a global threat. He said the knowledge of this threat led to the collaborative participation among 16 organizations from 11 countries in both Africa and Europe. He further explained that the University of Cape Coast, the University for Development Studies, DexAfrica Ltd, and Farmerline Ltd were the key project partners for SustInAFRICA in Ghana.

The project has 6 Work Packages distributed among all African Partners and UCC is the lead partner in coordinating Work Package 3 (WP3). Prof. Eghan said, “As WP3 involves targets design and implementation of smart farming demonstration trials for resilient and sustainable agricultural production, and the delivery of ecosystem services in selected agro-ecological zones in your respective countries, I urge you to stay focused and adopt an all-inclusive approach to carry out your activities when you go back to your respective countries.”

Prof. Kwame Agyei Frimpong, Associate Professor in Soil Fertility at the University of Cape Coast, gave an overview of the project, the activities, deliverables, and timelines.  He explained that the overall goal of the project is to empower West and North African smallholder farmers and as well empower small and medium-sized enterprises.

He said, “We are going to facilitate the sustainable intensification of African systems. Next, we will develop and deploy a framework of best agricultural practices and technologies based on a systems approach. After that, we will then verify the efficacy of the technologies and practices we have developed together to intensify the food production in a self-sufficient, sustainable, and resilient manner.”

The principal investigator from UCC is prof. Kwame Agyei Frimpong. The co-investigators are Dr. Michael Adu, Dr. Ransford Opoku Darko and Dr. Fati Von Abubakar. Participants of the conference included partners from Burkina-Faso, Niger, Egypt, and Ghana.

SustInAFRICA is an EU-funded project coordinated by the Natural Resource Institute Finland (Luke).

SGS ENGAGES POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

09 Apr, 2021 By DIS

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS-UCC) in collaboration with the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG-UCC) has held a research seminar for graduate students to educate them in the selection of their research topics, gap identification, and student-supervisor relationships.

The Vice-Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Prof Kankam Boadu, who chaired the program, mentioned that over the years, the School of Graduate Studies had put measures and structures in place to facilitate the graduation rate of students. He noted that one of such was the GRASAG-UCC Research Seminar. He said students who had keenly participated in such seminars have benefited tremendously and have enjoyed their graduate school experience. He urged the participants to ask constructive questions, contribute to the discussions, and be prepared to learn from the research seminars.

Presenting on the topic “Gap identification and selection of research topic”, Prof. Francis Enu-Kwesi, an Associate Professor at the Department of Integrated Development Studies of the School for Development Studies, explained that the ability to identify a gap reflected a person’s understanding of the knowledge in their discipline, helped to reduce the duplication of research work and also minimized the chances of plagiarism.

Prof. Enu-Kwesi said that more reading, and reading materials such as systematic reviews, content analysis reports, meta-analysis reports, and journals were required to help in the identification of gaps for formulating a research topic.

Speaking on the topic “Student-Supervisor Relationship”, Mr. Isaac Kosi, a Lecturer at the Department of Management of the School of Business, explored the concept of a quality relationship and supervision. Mr. Kosi suggested that students should be assigned to supervisors who have expertise in the research area where they (students) want to research. He added that there should be clear procedures with support systems outlined for students who wish to change a supervisor within the structure of the University, for the wellbeing of Post-Graduate studies. He also advised that supervisors should show interest in their student's well-being.
