UCC Lecturer Promotes Gardening in Halls of Residence

30 Mar, 2021 By louis Mensah

A lecturer at the School of Agriculture, Dr. Frank Kwekucher Ackah, has inspired some students of the University to enter into gardening in their halls of residence.

Through Dr. Ackah’s guidance, 40 students have cultivated cabbage, lettuce, cucumber, spring onions, and garden eggs. The students have cultivated the vegetables mainly in waste plastic buckets/containers and sacks in Adehye, Casely Hayford, Ogua, Valco, Kwame Nkrumah, and SRC Halls.

 SDG Goal 2

Dr. Ackah noted that the initiative was in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 which seeks to “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”.

According to Dr. Akah, the initiative was intended to develop the interest of students in gardening in particular and agriculture in general. He said the project was also aimed at attracting the youth into agriculture so that they could earn a living and create employment for others after their university education. "Unemployment in this country is a disturbing phenomenon and I believe there are a lot of job opportunities in agriculture which the youth can explore to improve their living conditions," he emphasised.

In his view, taking the students through gardening would inspire them to make good use of any space around them to cultivate vegetables and even enter into large-scale commercial production for the country and export abroad. “I am passionate about agriculture and my goal is to mobilise the youth for development in the country. I have started this initiative with level 100 Agri-Business students with the aim of making Ghana the food basket of Africa and possibly the world in the near future,” he explained.

Benefits

Touching on the benefits of gardening, he indicated that the students could save money from buying vegetables and also add to the nutritional requirements of the body. “Some of the vegetables we buy from the open market are not well handled and their sources are mostly not known," he added.

Dr. Ackah was happy to note that some staff of the University had embraced home gardening and were cultivating vegetables in their backyard. “Lecturers from the School of Agriculture continue to support staff of the University who have cultivated vegetables and other crops,” he reported.

Home Gardening Facebook Page

In order to spread home gardening nationwide, Dr. Ackah said he had created a Facebook page with more than 60, 000 members from all over the country. He explained that some lecturers from the School of Agriculture on the page give expert advice to members on vegetables and other crop production. He added that he had extended the initiative to some churches and basic schools in the Central Region. “This is our contribution to promoting home gardening in Ghana. We always receive calls from individuals and several organisations for guidance on how to start gardening in the home and on a large commercial basis”.

Dr. Ackah was optimistic that the future looked very bright considering the enthusiasm and interest of the youth in agriculture in recent times.

Students' Experience

Some of the students who are involved in the initiative were full of joy to see their vegetables blossom during a visit to Adehye and Valco Halls. Three students successfully harvested lettuce which they cultivated three weeks ago.

Rasheedatu Seidu Ali, a beneficiary student said she was really excited to be part of the project. “At the initial stages, our friends were mocking us but when they saw that the vegetables were matured for harvesting, they began to show interest in the project” she averred.

She mentioned that the most fulfilling part of the project was harvesting the vegetables, adding “You feel proud that your hard work has yielded good results”

Dr. Ackah introducing pupils at Hill Crest School in Cape Coast to gardening in sacks

Comfort Appiah who is also a level 100 Agri-Business student indicated that she has plans of introducing her family to home gardening during vacation. She added that the project had inspired her to enter into large-scale vegetable production. “We started this project just three weeks ago and I feel very excited that I have been able to harvest my lettuce,” she stated.

The students urged their colleagues and the youth to take interest in home gardening considering its enormous economic and nutritional benefits. They appealed to the Management of the University to support the initiative and make it a University-wide project for students.

UCC INAUGURATES KNOWLEDGE COMMONS AND SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION UNIT

UCC Inaugurate Knowledge Commons and Scholarly Communication Unit

30 Mar, 2021 By DIS

The Sam Jonah Library of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has inaugurated a new

Knowledge Commons and Scholarly Communication Unit to enhance collaborative learning and

research amongst students, faculty, and the broader university community.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Chancellor of UCC, Dr. Sir Sam Esson Jonah, explained that a

library was an important organ of the university system that provided a lifeline for the academic

quality of any university. He noted that all over the world, traditional libraries were being

transformed into learning commons to make them more attractive and resourceful for the next

generation library users. He indicated that the Knowledge Commons and Scholarly

Communication Unit would contribute to the quality of research output, and increase the

visibility of the University of Cape Coast. He said, “the new Scholarly Communication Unit will

ensure that UCC journals are published and managed according to international standards”.

Dr. Sir. Jonah pointed out that there was a need for a national repository of the knowledge and

research output of Ghana to serve the intellectual and research needs of the country. He therefore

urged universities, research institutions, and industries to work together to develop innovative

ways of knowledge transfer for the country.

He also noted that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, universities all over the world were adopting

innovative ways of teaching and research. He therefore urged the Management of the University

Library to consider developing their electronic library system to support electronic learning,

research, and publishing in addition to the modernization of the physical library.

The Chancellor commended University Management for their commitment and dedication in

accomplishing the initiative saying, “the Sam Jonah Library was on course to fulfilling its

mission of being a world-class library. Therefore, you have my highest assurance of my

continuous support for the University and the Sam Jonah Library.”

The Vice-Chancellor of the UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong in his address, noted that the

University of Cape Coast envisions to become an entrepreneurial university with worldwide

acclaim. He explained that central to this, was the need to present students with limitless

opportunities to enhance and enable them to acquire 21 st Century core competencies and skills-

sets that will make them internationally and globally competitive. His expectation is that the new

Scholarly Communication Unit would develop set standards that would characterize scholarly

communications at UCC.

He pledged his support to the mandate of the Library saying, “With the University Management

under my leadership, I will continue to support the modernization and transformation agenda of

the Sam Jonah Library to position itself in becoming a world-class academic library.”

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, who chaired the

inauguration ceremony, indicated that University Management together with the Board of the

Sam Jonah Library, took the initiative to reorganize the library space into a vibrant,

collaborative, technology-driven learning environment. She explained that the establishment of

the UCC Knowledge Commons was a response to the Sam Jonah Library's commitment to

providing a technology-intensive space that will attract campus-wide collaborations instead of

departmental collaborations. “The unit would work closely with the editors of the university

journals, researchers, and publishers to ensure that research publications were of high quality.”,

she said.

The University Librarian, Dr. Mac-Anthony Cobblah, expressed gratitude to the Chancellor and

University Management for their support of the initiative. He explained that with the

establishment of the Knowledge Commons, students will have unrestricted and uninterrupted

access to electronic books, and electronic journal collections of the library including specialized

services.

The Knowledge Commons of the Sam Jonah Library is fully furnished with a sitting capacity of

are all connected to super high-speed internet.
