Law Students Association Immortalise Rev. Fr. Dr. Isidore K. Bonabom with a Lecture

04 Apr, 2019 By louis Mensah

The Law Students (LSA) of UCC has immortalised Rev. Fr. Dr Isidore Kuupolle, Bonabom SJ with a lecture as part of its annual week celebration.

The Rev. Fr. Dr Bonabom was a lecturer at the Faculty of Law until his demise on December 22, 2015, through a fatal accident on the Wa-Nandom road in the Upper West Region. Aside from being a lecturer in the University, Rev. Fr. Dr Bonabom positively affected the lives of others with his love, care and humility.

The 3rd edition of the lecture was on the theme “Freedom and Justice: the Ideals for Enhancing Rule of Law”.

Religion and Law Operate Under an Authority for Guidance

Speaking on the topic “Religion and Law: In Search of a Just Society,” the Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid said Religion and Law operated under authority for guidance and also required political powers for direction. He noted that Religion was embedded in the customs of the people and therefore the laws should also take cognizance of this reality saying “In Africa Religion is law and the very soul of African existence and, therefore, you cannot divorce the African from his religion. Our concept of religion encompasses all aspect of our culture, customs and traditions.”

Laws Must Reflect the Customs and Traditions of the People

Dr Abdul-Hamid argued that if the constitution of Ghana emanated from the people, then it must reflect their customs and traditions. “If Ghanaians are the source of the constitution, then in what capacity does the British form of justice, judicial processes, jurisprudence and legal theories serve as the basis of the realities of law and justice in Ghana,” he asked.

Truth is Only One

The Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development averred that the European understanding of truth was different from that of the African. “In Africa, there is the belief that there is only one truth and not alternative truth as we are made to believe in the English law and there is no alternative truth- so the European mentality that there are various truths and our understanding that truth is one are incongruent. They are dissonant in principle and therefore, if you allow Africans to assimilate this it becomes disastrous”.

Dr Abdul-Hamid further stated that “Since truth is justice, we cannot find justice under judicial arrangement whose ethos is fundamentally opposed to our concept of truth”. He posited that unlike English law where the truth resides in the bosom of the judge, in Africa “truth is just one”.  He said the English Law could not deliver justice to Ghanaians pointing out that “You can only deliver justice to the people who resonate with your beliefs”.

Future Looks Gloomy with the Imposition of English Law

Dr Abdul-Hamid painted a gloomy picture of the future if nothing was done to change the current constitution which was full of laws from the English. He ended his presentation with a quote from Dr K. B. Maison, that “Law cannot be imposed on the cultural identity and since our law-the English law is divorced from our cultural identity I dare say that our search for a just society has a long way to go different”

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On his part, the Minister for Railways Development, MMrJoe Ghartey spoke on the “Different Facet of Human Rights: Economic, Social and Cultural Right as Basis for Freedom and Justice in Enhancing the Rule of Law”. He said the universal declaration of human rights initially did not explicitly grant economic and social rights. He explained that economic, social and economic rights had to do with the right to work and measure, free choice of employment, just conditions of work, equal pay for equal work, remuneration freedom to form and join trade unions, the right to a standard of living adequate food, shelter and clothing, medical care and social services, education, right to culture among others.

Fundamental Human Rights is Meaningless without Economic Empowerment

Mr Ghartey said, “What comes to mind when you mention Freedom and Justice and fundamental human rights; is civil and political rights thus the right to vote, the right to free speech, and right to fair trial among others”. He argued that fundamental human rights would be meaningless if the individual was not enlightened and empowered economically. “Without economic and social rights, civil and political rights and by extension freedom and justice and rule of law are meaningless. What does the right to vote mean to someone who is starving,” he asked.

Contribute Towards Development of the Country

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle who graced the function commended the students for instituting the lecture in honour of Rev. Fr. Bonabom who was passionate about what he believed in. He advised them to contribute their quota towards the development of the country irrespective of their political affiliation. “This country was meant to be together so the New Patriotic Party(NPP) or the National Democratic Congress(NDC) cannot provide the needs of Ghanaians unless each complements the other in contributing towards the greater good of this country” he noted.

DPA, Global Wings Travel Organise Blood Donation Exercise on Campus

04 Apr, 2019 By louis Mensah

As part efforts to stock the Blood Bank at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, the Directorate of Public Affairs, in collaboration with Global Wings Travel and Tours Limited has organised a blood donation exercise on campus.

The exercise which was also in partnership with the Directorate of Health Services, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and ATL FM was patronised by several students who voluntarily donated blood.

Corporate Social Responsibility to the Health Sector

Speaking the programme, the Director of Operations of Global Wings Travel and Tours Limited, Mr. Fuseini Sugrinooma, said the exercise was the company’s maiden event to support the Health Sector through a blood donation exercise. “As a company, we see this as a Social Corporate Responsibility on our part. This is the time to give back to the society for what we have benefitted from them,” he explained. He added that the company has been working with the University Community for some time now by providing them with travel and tour services and, therefore, the exercise was to give back through the blood donation exercise.

Mr. Sugrinooma pointed out that “blood is special, it cannot be manufactured and there is the need to stock the blood banks of our health facilities with it”.  He appealed to the general public to donate blood to save lives and also urged corporate organisations, NGOs and other government institutions to organise similar exercises to help stock the blood banks of health facilities in the country.

Importance of Stocking Blood Banks

Explaining the need for blood in hospitals, the Head of Laboratory Department, University Health Service, Mr. Samuel Amoah, noted that the high demand for blood from the University Hospital and other health facilities in Cape Coast and its environs meant that there was the need to stock the Blood Bank at CCTH. “We need blood for pregnant women, patients with acute anaemia and accident emergencies to sustain them,” he appealed.

Describing the current status of the University Hospital blood bank, he said that though there were few pints in stock, they needed more in order to serve as a back-up and to cater for emergencies. “Anyone who donates blood will be given a ‘Donor Card’ which gives him/her or a family member the opportunity to be given blood at the hospital when the need arises,” he added.

Appeal for Voluntary Donation of Blood

The Team Leader, Senior Blood Donor Organiser, Cape Teaching Hospital Blood Bank, Mr. Samuel Quarmyne, stated that “blood as a commodity cannot be reproduced by anyone except through voluntarily donating blood.”  Considering the dependence of other health facilities on the Blood Bank at CCTH, he entreated the public to voluntarily donate blood to sustain help them provide this essential services to save lives stressing that “When you donate a pint of blood, you can save three babies or a person.”  He advised the public to shun any misconceptions which were being propagated by some individuals about blood donation.

I donated to Save Life

A student donor, Susana Namale, said that it was a great opportunity for her to have contributed to the exercise to help save lives because she has always been hearing of shortages at the blood banks. She urged the public to get involved to improve the current status of blood banks at health facilities in the country.

At the end of the exercise, ninety-one (91) pints of blood were donated for the screening process to be used by CCTH and UCC Hospital.

Chinese Ministry of Education to Fund “Confucius Classroom” at University Primary School

03 Apr, 2019 By louis Mensah

The Ghanaian Director of the Confucius Institute (CI-UCC) has indicated that the Chinese Ministry of Education will provide funding to establish a “Confucius Classroom” at the University Primary School (UPS) to formally introduce the Chinese Language into the School’s academic programmes.

Prof. Mensah disclosed that an initial amount of $30, 000 has been approved to procure educational materials and other equipment to boost teaching and learning of the Chinese Language at UPS.

Prof. Mensah announced this at a programme to mark the “Chinese Language Day” celebration at the University Primary School. Prof Mensah thanked the headmistress, teaching/non-teaching staff and pupils of the School for their keen interest in the Chinese Language.

The Celebration of Chinese Language Day

In his remarks, the China Director of Confucius Institute, Prof. Hu Liangcai, explained that based on the great contributions of the people of China to the advancement of the World, the United Nations Security Council concluded formally to include the Chinese Language as one of the widely used official languages in the United Nations’ countries. “This has necessitated the celebration of the Chinese Language Day to let people understand the real importance of the Chinese Language, and it has been the responsibility of the CI-UCC to promote this course,” he stressed.

Prof. Langcai was optimistic that the programme would have a positive impact on both teachers and the pupils, as well as create a good opportunity for people to know more about China and the Chinese Language. He encouraged people to study Chinese in order to create opportunities for them to secure scholarships for further studies in China.

Appreciation to CI-UCC

Speaking at the programme, the Headmistress of UPS, Mrs Georgina Aglobitse, was grateful to the Confucius Institute, for giving pupils in the School the opportunity to learn the Chinese Language. She noted that ‘Chinese Language Day’ would help develop the interest of the pupils in the language.

Mrs Aglobitse expressed gratitude to the CI-UCC, the Chinese and UPS teachers for their enormous contributions and support towards the success of the programme. “The mere fact that the children were able to sing different Chinese songs and dance to the tune, is not only entertaining but also encouraging. This means the children are learning the culture alongside the Language – it is impressive and they have really done well,” she remarked.

The Celebration was climaxed with a series of inter-class singing competition, drinking challenge, as well as music and dance performances. Prizes were presented to the deserving classes that emerged victoriously.

02 Apr, 2019 By louis Mensah

The School of Physical Sciences has held a workshop to train laboratory technicians to enhance their skills in managing laboratories in the School.

Opening the workshop, the Dean of the School, Prof. David Essumang, said the workshop which was the first of its kind was to equip participants to conform to professional standards in their work as laboratory technicians. “All our lives depend on the laboratory technician and when he makes a mistake in his/her analysis and get it wrong, we all suffer” he noted.

Assist in Training Competent Lab Technicians

Prof. Essumang entreated the laboratory technicians to do their best to assist in the training of students who were experienced and could become an asset to industry.  He said the School would continue to organise such workshops to enlighten them on international best practices.

The Vice Dean of the School of Physical Sciences, Prof. Ruphino Zugle, called on the technicians to be innovative in their work. “This workshop should change the way you do things and we expect that you will do something unique with the knowledge you will acquire from this place,” he implored them.

Be Conscious of People’s Rights

The Quality Control Manager of Food and Drugs Authority Head Office, Accra, Mr Joseph Ofosu Siaw, in his remarks advised the participants to be conscious of the fact that people now know their rights. “We are in an era of democracy and people have the right to take legal action against you if you don’t follow the protocols of laboratory work,” he cautioned.

Mr Siaw who is an alumnus of UCC said industry expected graduates who were on top of issues and could deliver to meet the needs of the organisation. He, therefore, called for collaboration between academia and industry to discuss ways of producing highly skilled professionals for the job market. “The picture out there is not good and we need to review the curriculum to conform to global standards,” he observed.
