The University of Cape Coast has matriculated seven thousand, one hundred and sixty four (7, 164) fresh students who were admitted to pursue various programmes of study for the 2021/2022 academic year. The number comprises both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, a total of eighteen thousand, two hundred and eighty (18, 280) applications were received by the university. Out of this number, sixteen thousand, four hundred and one (16, 401) applications were received in respect of regular undergraduate programmes while one thousand, six hundred and thirty-seven were postgraduate applications.
Per statistics from the Directorate of Academic Affairs-UCC, the Vice Chancellor said out of eleven thousand, two hundred and eighty (11,280) admissions offered, seven thousand one hundred and sixty-four were enrolled.
At the ceremony, Prof. Nyarko Boampong while cautioning the students against the disregard for rules and regulations governing the university also entreated them to stay dedicated to their academic work since the university places high premium on quality education.
Adherence to Covid-19 Protocols
With the surge in the absolute disregard for prescribed Covid-19 protocols, the freshly matriculated students have been advised to be responsible by adhering to the protocols especially the wearing of face masks, regular hand washing, hand sanitizing and maintaining social distance. Due to the threatening devastation witnessed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Prof. Nyarko Boampong indicated the resolve of management of the university to ensure students enjoy a congenial environment for both academic and social work by putting in place the needed measures.
Security on Campus
The Vice Chancellor mentioned that the university remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of both staff and students on campus. In this regard, he made particular mention of police patrols deployed to ensure the safety of all. He also entreated the students to be conscious and take responsibility for their personal safety and security at all times.
Prof. Nyarko Boampong advised students to avoid individual exposure to unscrupulous persons particularly in the night to avoid falling prey to their activities. The students were also cautioned against the use of unapproved routes and ensuring that routes they ply are well lit.
UCC Achievements in recent times
The University of Cape Coast having participated in the 2021 Times Higher Education Global Ranking of universities was ranked among the top three hundred and fifty (350) universities globally. UCC was ranked first in Ghana, first in West Africa, fourth on the African Continent and first in terms of research influence globally. The 2022 Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University rankings also indicated that UCC is number one in Ghana, number one in West Africa, number one in Africa and the second highest ranked first time entrant out of one hundred and four (104) universities from thirty–two (32) countries.
In 2021, the UCC School of Business was crowned winner of the third edition of the Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC) competition. The Faculty of Law also participated and won the Law Challenge- Ghana 2021. Again, a pupil of the UCC Basic School won first position in Africa and third in the world at the Intercontinental Spelling Bee competition in Dubai.
The matriculation ceremony held on Friday March 4, 2021 had some of the fresh students participating virtually from their various halls of residence. The event also saw in attendance the Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, the Registrar, Mr. Jeff Teye Onyame as well as other key officers of the university.
