Sacred Heart SHS Students Visit Department of Communication Studies Experience Lab

Message:

Students and tutors of Sacred Heart SHS after their tour on UCC campus.

Students of Sacred Heart Senior High School (SHS) in Accra have visited the Department  of Communication Studies Experience Lab to acquaint themselves with production procedures.

The tour by members of the writers and readers club of the school was part of the school’s extra curricula activities.

The tour aimed at acquainting them with undergraduate students' news gathering, packaging and distribution processes of the Department's newsletter, among others.

The students were taken round the various segments of the Experience Lab (which gives  undergraduate students practical experience in their area of study) and had the opportunity to pose questions in the areas of television, radio and newspaper production.

Mr. Enoch Acheampong, a professional-in-residence at the Department, briefed the high school students on the various processes news go through ahead of reaching campus readers as packaged products.

Mr. Enoch Acheampong explaining a point to the students ahead of their tour of the Experience Lab

With a good number of the students opting to be journalists in the near future, he advised the  students to inculcate the habit of reading wide in order to become successful in their career.

“It is important to read, read, read, read everything. Everything is important in journalism and in life. Just be inquisitive so as to learn and know a bit of everything,” he said.

He also educated the students about  the sources of news, story writing, newspaper design, proofreading and common terminologies in the newspaper industry, videography and photography basics.

He also entreated students to listen to good radio stations to improve both the acceptable use of the English Language and news reporting

He urged the students to always seek the thoughts of others and to accept criticisms when they are made regarding their reports as journalists.

Mr. Acheampong shared his experiences with the students and urged them to follow their interests for the purpose of specialization.

“Inasmuch as you want to do or know a bit of everything, you should have some kind of specialization in a topic when it comes to journalism,” he added.

Mr. Simon Owusu, a teacher who accompanied the students in an interview with University Press, said the school looks forward to bringing out the best in the students and with many of them desiring to be journalists, there was the need to take the students out to have practical experience of what journalists do.

He said some of the students truly aspire to be journalists in the future, the reason why they have joined the writer’s and reader’s club of the school so the school deemed it necessary to take them on the tour.

The students were excited at the opportunity and expressed the hope that they would one day live their dreams as renowned journalists by pursuing further studies at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Mrs. Lydia Ansah, a teacher, also accompanied the students.

Vice-Chancellors Welcome Message to Students

Message:

Akwaaba!

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the University of Cape Coast (UCC). Look no further beyond UCC if you are looking for the best of university education. Our excellent faculty and staff, superb facilities and serene atmosphere provide you a life-time university experience.

Founded in 1962, the University has grown from a humble student population of 155 to over 70,000. UCC was initially established as a University College and given the mandate to train highly skilled professional teachers for Ghana’s second cycle institutions for the Ministry of Education, with the sole aim of meeting the manpower needs of Ghana at the time. However, with the attainment of autonomy in 1972, the University expanded and diversified its academic programmes to include studies in the Humanities, Basic and Applied Sciences. Currently, it runs programmes in Medicine, Law and Forensic Sciences.

The University today, is organized into five (5) colleges with schools/faculties and departments under them. These Colleges are: College of Humanities and Legal Studies, College of Education Studies, College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, College of Health and Allied Sciences and College of Distance Education.

With a serene campus and a motivated faculty and staff ready to offer their best, the University is committed to providing students with the best education. At UCC, we inspire our students to reach their full potential, to advance knowledge, and make meaningful contribution to the society. We are guided by an educational philosophy, which is student-centred with a focus on meeting the varied needs of our students, nurturing and challenging them to grow socially, physically, morally and intellectually. We are determined here at UCC to deliver the best possible student experience with good timely feedback, excellent personal tutoring and superb student facilities. We are committed to providing our students with quality programmes, activities and services that enhance and enrich students’ academic experience. We encourage our students to collaborate and experience working life beyond the classroom. It is not surprising therefore, that our products exhibit comprehensive knowledge and professional skills in dealing with the demands of a rapidly evolving world.

After years of delivering on our mandate, the University has earned an accolade as a University of Competitive Choice. Our graduates enter the workforce with an ability to challenge routine thinking and provide innovative solutions to industry. This is our hallmark.

The University changed my life and I believe it will change yours too. I therefore look forward to welcoming you to the University of Cape Coast.

Message from the Director Directorate of Research, Innovation & Consultancy

Message:

The re-positioning agenda of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), which was spurred by changing trends and patterns of multi-faceted and interlinked socio-economic, political and cultural issues, is anchored by a new era of active engagement in quality research. Among the numerous interventions that centre-stages research at UCC is the redefinition of the mandate of the then Consultancy Unit to include oversight responsibilities of research and innovation. This led to the establishment of the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) in 2013. The expected outcome indicators of DRIC’s mandate in superintending

activities related to research, innovation and consultancy include, but not limited to, increased number of national and international research grant contracts and consultancy, improved researcher productivity, improved ranking of UCC among Universities in Ghana, Africa and beyond, and increased number of patents. These outcomes are expected to culminate in the

transformation of lives, thereby making UCC more visible in serving as an indispensable hub for hosting and producing high quality researchers as well as engaging in cutting-edge research. Since the dawn of the new research era in UCC, faculty members have been resourced in diverse ways.

The services and resources offered include: organising sensitisation workshops on issues related to publication and visibility; offering mentorship workshops on article writing; revamping the provision of research support grants; streamlining and expanding the provision of travel grants for conference attendance; and publicising calls for external research grants, contracts and consultancy. The University Management, on the other hand, has witnessed provision

of new research services in the areas of documenting research output and productivity; ranking Departments, Faculties/Schools and Colleges based on aggregate number of publications and citations of faculty members; developing policies specifically Research Policy and the

Intellectual Property Policy for UCC; and providing advise on all matters related to research, innovation and consultancy. Notable, of the advice are matters related to improved quality of research and visibility. Following from the four years of intensive engagements aimed at

strengthening research output in UCC, the time has come to showcase to the global community the rich and diverse research capability, capacity and track record of faculty members in UCC. This maiden research report tends to serve this purpose. With academic units comprising five colleges, 15 faculties/schools and more than 80 Departments/Centres/Institutes/Directorates/Units, research output is indeed diverse. This corroborates the scope of the University’s research theme - Health, Education and Environmental Sustainability for National Development In Changing Global Contexts - for the period 2013 - 2017. Guided

by the theme and internal support received over the period as well as scope, nature and regularity of external calls for research grants, contracts and consultancy, faculty members in the last five years have executed various research assignments worth showcasing to the global community. This publication is intended to show appreciation to funders and collaborators of

research conducted in and by faculty members of UCC, industry partners who have utilised capacity endowed in the University and also, to sustain and attract new collaborations, funding and industry engagement.

The DRIC with support from University Management will ensure sustenance of the interventions and as well, introduce new tools to improve research capacity in UCC.

Among the new research tools to be introduced in the 2018 calendar year are Elsevier’s solutions (ScienceDirect, Scopus and SciVal) and the establishment of an Industry

and Innovation Unit.
