Prioritise Your Academic Work-Pro-Vice-Chancellor Admonishes Fresh Students

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K. T. Oduro, has admonished newly-admitted students for the 2018/2019 academic year to prioritise their studies above all other activities on campus.

Prof. Oduro reminded the fresh students that they were purposely in UCC to be taught to get in depth understanding of their respective fields of study.   “You’re here to study, all other things are complementary.  If you’re a Christian, you balance your Christian life with your studies. Make your studies your point of evangelism.” he advised.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor was speaking at the opening of a three-day orientation programme for fresh students at the Congregation Grounds.

Whiles assuring that the University grants freedom with minimal restriction on students’ life on campus, he implored the fresh students that UCC would not tolerate acts of indiscipline from its students. “Nobody can achieve his or her maximum expectation if that person is not disciplined,” he stated.

Purpose of Orientation Ceremony

Explaining the importance of the orientation ceremony, the Director of Academic Affairs, Mr. Jeff Onyame, said the programme was to introduce them to the University Community so that they could succeed academically. He entreated the students to attach importance to every aspect of the programme in order to overcome challenges they were likely to face as they begin their studies.  

Mr. Onyame advised the students to read the students handbook, policies and other rules and regulations governing students’ life on campus. “Stick to these regulations because if you fall foul you will be dealt with,” he cautioned.

Be Diligent and Responsible

The Dean of Students, Prof. Eugene K. M. Darteh, urged the students to be diligent and responsible in as they begin their academic journey in UCC.  “You are responsible for your actions and inactions and all choices have consequences” he said.  He called on the fresh students to challenge themselves beyond their limits but they should endeavour to be responsible

Prof. Darteh advised them to engage in activities that would add value to their lives whiles on campus. “Opportunities abound in extra curricula activities but ensure that your academic work never suffers” he told them. He asked the students not to hesitate to call on the Office of the Dean of Students Affairs for support to help them in their studies on campus.

Prof. Darteh congratulated the Students’ Representative Council for organising hassle free shuttle service for the fresh students.  

Presentations at the Orientation Ceremony

The students were also addressed by officials from the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (DAPQA), Department of Communication Studies, Electricity Section, Ghana National Fire Service, Chaplaincy Board on the first day of the orientation programme.  Other issues to be discussed at the programme are Students Counselling Services, Disability Services, Health Services, Disability Services, Library Services, Registration Issues, Campus Security Services, Academic, Programmes, Policies and Regulations, Regulations for Junior Members, Sporting Activities and Anger Management.

They would also be presentations on Structures of UCC/Channel of Communication, Sexual Harassment Gender Issues, Centre for International Education, Narcotics Drug Trafficking and Drug Abuse, Study Habit and Confucius Institute.

Delegation from Vodafone Ghana Calls on Vice-Chancellor

A delegation from Vodafone Ghana, has called on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, at the Council Chamber.

The Head of Product, Mr. Edward Aikins who led the delegation said the visit was to strengthen the relationship between Vodafone Ghana and UCC. He said the relationship between UCC and his organisation should be mutually beneficial to the two partners. “We have been doing a lot of things for other universities but it seems we need to do more to move our relationship with UCC beyond just transaction to a win-win one,” he noted.

Mr. Aikins said his organisation was ready to support UCC in various ways to advance education in Ghana. “The support can be in various forms, we can give scholarships, internship opportunities for UCC students and many other services,” he noted.

The Vice-Chancellor in his response said his vision was to digitize the entire University, adding that “We have started doing something and we’ll need Vodafone to assist us realise this vision,” he said.  Prof. Ampiah indicated that the University has created virtual classrooms for its distance students to minimise the face-face contacts. He told the delegation that the University would engage them to explore areas where Vodafone could be of support to realise this vision.

Other members of the delegation were Mr. Johnson Arkaah (National Corporate Service Manager, Freda Obeng (Sales Manager) and Collins Knight Arthur (Corporate Account Manager).

Present at the meeting were the Director of Information Communication and Technology Services, Dr. Regina Gyampoh-Vidogah and Director of Public Affairs, Major Kofi Baah-Bentum (Rtd).
