The master's programme will be run for three (3) sandwich semesters spanning over 24 months.A sandwich semester will be between the months of June and July and last for eight (8) weeks.The programme comprises of 14 courses.The courses of the programme are designed to develop skills in a number essential areas of accounting and these will be delivered through case studies,lectures,seminars and group discussions.In addition,students will be required to submit a dissertation.

The programme is set to equip students with managerial competence and skills required to deal with the current complex accounting issues in organisations. The philosophy behind the programme is to develop middle and top level accounting executives who have the ability to manage complex accounting situations, develop skills and competencies that enable them to make decisions in uncertain or ambiguous situations. The MCom (Accounting) degree programme is intended to encourage students to build upon their marketing skills as well as exercise the powers of innovation and creativity in developing their accounting careers.
A First Degree candidate seeking admission to the MCom programme must: 1. Have obtained a good first degree (at least, a Second Class) in an appropriate field of study from a recognized academic institution. 2. Submit an official transcript of academic record 3. Submit, at least, two reference reports, one of which must be from a former lecturer. 4. Submit a proposal of 2-3 pages on the intended area of study, including a bibliography. 5. Satisfy any additional requirement prescribed by the College/Faculties/Schools/Institutes/Departments. These may include relevant work experience, a written entrance examination and/or an interview.
A Non-researched Master’s Degree candidate seeking admission to the MPhil/MCom programme must: 1. Have obtained a CGPA of 2.5 or better in the master’s course work. 2. Submit an official transcript of academic record. 3. Submit, at least, two reference reports, one of which must be from a former lecturer. 4. Submit a proposal of 2-3 pages on the intended area of study, including a bibliography. 5. any additional requirement prescribed by the College/Faculties/Schools/Institutes/Departments. These may include relevant work experience, a written entrance examination and/or an interview.
A master’s degree holder in areas other than business will be required to take relevant courses in the chosen area of specialization. A successful applicant will be offered probationary admission as Postgraduate Research Student (PRS) for the first semester of the first year. Students may progress to the thesis phase in the second semester of the first year after having satisfied the following conditions: (i) Taken and passed all requisite background courses as may be prescribed by the Department. (ii) Successfully defended a research proposal before a Departmental Examining Panel.
The philosophy of this programme is therefore to provide business education aimed at developing accounting personnel and managers with the requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities in the prudent management of funds. It is also aimed at developing individuals who are capable of demonstrating analytical and critical thinking skills.
The overall goal of the programme is to provide business education aimed at developing accounting personnel and managers with the requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities in the prudent management of funds in the private and public sectors of the economy.
Components of the programme
This is a four-year degree programme, made up of course work and a project work. The first year of the programme would focus on University-wide courses. The second year courses focus largely on Faculty-wide and departmental courses. The major finance courses (electives courses) starts from Level 300.
Students offering Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) would undergo two (2) months industrial attachment during two separate long vacations (Level 200 and 300). The purpose is to expose the students to real work situations to enable them better appreciate the principles and concepts taught in the lecture room.
Objectives of the Programme
Having completed the programme, the graduate will:
1. be equipped with the requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities required for the prudent management of funds;
2. be able to prepare and present financial reports in accordance with the relevant Accounting Standards (i.e. International Financial Reporting Standards), and in line with the institutional, legal and regulatory framework in Ghana;
3. be provided with opportunities for career development and advancement in the field of accountancy;
4. gain global significance and work efficiently and effectively in any part of the globe; and
5. develop entrepreneurial spirits coupled with confidence, innovativeness, creativity and a hunger for success in their chosen discipline.
Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations, West African Senior School Certificate Examination and General Business Certificate Examination:
Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) Candidates must obtain passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including Core English Language and Core Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies. Also, candidates must have passes in any three elective subjects including Financial Accounting. The applicant’s aggregate should not exceed 24. West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination Candidates must obtain passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects including Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, or Social Studies. Also, candidates must have passes in any three elective subjects including Financial Accounting. The applicant’s aggregate should not exceed 36. General Business Certificate Exams Candidates with credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus three (3) relevant elective subjects would be eligible for admission into level 100.
General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates: Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better), Also the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students). Higher National Diploma Candidates Applicant must have graduated with a good HND certificate (i.e. at least 2nd Class Lower Division). In addition, the applicant must have acquired a 2-year post-HND qualification working experience. Candidates with Higher National Diploma (HND) in business related programmes may be admitted to Level 300. Other HND holders with at least Second Class may be admitted to Level 200. Other Diploma qualifications from elsewhere assessed to be equivalent to HND may be similarly considered. Advanced Business Certificate Examination (ABCE) Candidates Candidates with full Diploma Certificate in ABCE must have had credit passes in five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies in the General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE) or SSSCE or WASSCE. ABCE candidates may be considered for admission at level 200 of a degree programme. Mature Candidates The applicant must be at least 25 years old, and show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth which is at least 25 years old at the time of application. For admission, applicant must pass Mature Students' Entrance Examinations conducted by the University of Cape Coast in English Language, Mathematics and an Aptitude Test. Professional Certificate Holders Candidates with Part I of the following Professional Accountancy Bodies: Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and Chartered Financial Analysts may be admitted. Foreign Qualification All foreign qualifications would be referred to the National Accreditation Board (NAB) for determination of equivalence and eligibility for admission to the programme.

MSc. Microfinance is a unique programme that is solely offered by the Department of Economics, UCC to train microfinance practitioners both in the country and in the West African sub-region at the University of Cape Coast. The programme offers students the opportunity to appreciate the challenges confronting microfinance in Sub-Saharan Africa and develop strategies to deal with the challenges. It also offers the opportunity to develop capacity in teaching, research and outreach in microfinance.
Students who graduate with MSc. Microfinance are usually absorbed by the booming microfinance industry and other financial institutions in the country.

First degree holders (at least a second class lower division award) with professional experience in any of the following related areas: finance, banking and any other social science subject area. Potential participants without a first degree but who possess professional and other related qualification will be assessed by the Department for consideration into the programme.
The Ph.D. Economics programme at the University of Cape Coast is designed for students who wish to undertake advanced study and conducting original research in Economics. It is a three-year programme. During the first two semesters, students are required to take a Faculty compulsory course (Philosophical foundations of Social Sciences), Research Methods and some other courses that may be recommended by the supervisor of the student in consultation with Departmental Board. Students after successfully passing the above stated courses then proceed to write their thesis which must be based on original research and represent a major contribution to the body of Economic knowledge.

To be admitted to this programme, candidates must possess MPhil. in Economics
MPhil Economics is a two-year graduate programme designed to provide advance level training in Economics. Student admitted to pursue MPhil Economics would be required to do one course work and one year of thesis writing. The first year course work provides students with advance training in theoretical Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Economics and Econometrics. In addition, students have the option of choosing one elective course in either of the following areas: Financial Economics, Development Economics, Labour Economics, Agricultural Economics, Environmental Economics, etc.
The kind of training received in the first year of this programme is analogous to the first two years of a PhD programme at the best US universities. Thus MPhil Economics provides a solid foundation for progressing to the PhD programme at University of Cape Coast or elsewhere.
Since the Department of Economics is member of the African Economics Research Consortium (AERC), students admitted to read MPhil Economics are sent to Nairobi, Kenya from June to September every year to participate in the AERC’s Joint Facility for Electives (JFE). Students who participate in this programme get the opportunity to take two additional elective courses which tend to broaden their horizon. The participation of students in the JFE programme is fully sponsored by AERC.
