UCC Primary School Marks 55th Speech and Prize Giving Day

20 Dec, 2022 By DIS

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) Primary School has held its 55th Speech and Prize Giving Day on the theme, "58 years of Quality Primary Education: Expanding the Frontiers."

Speaking at the event, the Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs (DPA)-UCC, Major (rtd) Kofi Baah-Bentum, called on all school children to develop the habit of reading to help broaden their knowledge and horizons. While outlining the benefits pupils stood to obtain through reading, he mentioned that if children read a lot of books in addition to their lessons in the classroom, it would help them build a wide vocabulary to enhance their reading and writing skills and help them perform brilliantly at school.

Major Bentum, who chaired the function, advised the pupils to be focused and spend more time with their books rather than watching television programmes which would not benefit them. He admonished the pupils to take their academic work seriously, and follow good morals and values to make them better citizens.

The Director of DPA-UCC also entreated all stakeholders to help in the character-building and discipline of children.

For her part, the Headmistress of the School, Mrs Georgina Aglobitse, in her report, expressed her gratitude to the various stakeholders of the school for their contributions to the enviable records of the school so far. She also made particular mention of the sterling performance of some pupils of the school in recent times at the National Spelling Bee competition which had further positioned the school in good light.

She noted the School had produced great men and women in enviable positions around the globe and charged all to support the vision of the School to continue to improve its laurels.

Mrs. Aglobitse also urged parents to visit the school regularly to enquire about the performance of their children so that they would be able to assist them to improve on their academic performance.

She mentioned inadequate furniture, security issues, leaking roofs and indiscipline as some of the challenges militating against the school.

"Management and PTA are working assiduously to have these challenges ameliorated" she added.

The headteacher thanked the management of the University and parents for their continuous support of the school.

Vice-Chancellor Cuts Sod for Ultra-Modern Bus Terminal

09 Dec, 2022 By DIS

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has cut sod for the construction of two ultra-modern bus terminals on the University’s campus.

The first bus terminal will be constructed at the frontage of the East Gate, close to the GCB Bank, whilst the second terminal will be positioned at the frontage of the SRC Hostel.

The bus terminals would enable students to conveniently wait for busses to their destinations, as well as to their lecture halls.

Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor cut sod for the construction of the remodeling of the East Gate of the University.

The project is to give UCC a facelift.

The aforesaid projects will be fully-funded by the Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast and expected to be completed in six (6) months from the day of commencement.

Prof. Boampong in a brief remark said, “So as management we are happy that we have a close working relationship with our students and we will also support them to undertake this project so that in all, we will be able to uplift the image of our dear University.”

The Vice-Chancellor observed that the SRC had been a partner in development and praised the Council for putting up an edifice such as the SRC Hostel.

He commended the UCC-SRC for providing funds for the construction of the projects and urged all stakeholders to work within schedule and within budget.

For his part, a former SRC President, Christopher Dadson, whose administration mooted the ideas of the projects in 2020, stressed that the decision to undertake the projects was aimed at ensuring that the SRC contributes its quota to the developmental agenda of the University.

He added, “The SRC also started with the University and next academic year, the SRC also will be turning 60. And so as the 58th SRC President, during my time, I had a discussion with my executives to start these projects to remodel the University frontage, to put up a shuttle stop around Kwame Nkrumah Hall and also another shuttle stop between SRC and Superannuation Hostels to aid our students. Each of the projects is of importance, security-wise, and also for the comfort of our students.”

Regarding the remodeling of the University’s East Gate, Mr. Dadson said the project would stem indiscipline by drivers who park vehicles without recourse to road traffic regulations, especially, drivers who ply the Cape Coast–Takoradi highway, as well ensuring the safety of students who use the highway.

UCC Counseling Centre Goes Digital

09 Dec, 2022 By DIS

The Counseling Centre of University of Cape Coast has taken a giant leap to launch the digital version of its counseling service.

The move is to join the University's digitization drive and make counseling services accessible to staff and students of the University.

Prior to the introduction of this E-Counseling, the traditional face-to-face counseling service was the order of the day.

With the introduction of this technology, loggers- staff and students - can visit the University website to access online counseling services without moving to the various offices.

Launching the E-Counseling and Peer Counseling services, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong, in a speech read on his behalf by the Provost of the College of Education Studies, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, lauded the Counseling Centre for the initiative.

He said the E-Counseling would be a boon to students and staff to access quality counseling with ease. He said it was the Centre's goal to increase counselors’ accessibility to "bridge the gap between the clients, mainly students, and the counselors." That, according to him, had led to peer counseling to equip students with the requisite knowledge and skills to provide psycho social support to their colleague students, among others.

He noted that the Counseling Centre had taken Peer Counseling volunteers through the necessary training in communication, listening skills, ethics of peer Counseling, issues of confidentiality, basic Counseling skills, amongst others.

"I strongly believe that this initiative will go a long way to strengthen the support system of students and increase the quality of their learning outcomes," he added.

He assured management’s support to the Centre to enable it live up to its mandate.

For his part, the Director of the Counseling Centre, Rev. Fr. Dr. Anthony K. Nkyi, in a short remark, noted that academic success or outcome of students hinged on a sound mind and an atmosphere of peace, Peer Counseling and providing problem-solving ideas to help cope with challenges on campus.

"So whether it is cyber or peer counseling, access it and reap its benefits" he noted.

Dr. Nkyi said it was the hope of the Counseling Centre that "cyber counseling, peer counseling in addition to the face to face counseling will help both students and staff in their search for meaning in life."

The Dean of the Faculty of Educational Foundations, Prof. Godwin Awabil, chaired the launch.

09 Dec, 2022 By DIS

One hundred and twenty-three (123) level 400 students of the School of Medical Sciences (SMS), University of Cape Coast have been transited from the study of preclinical to clinical health services at a White Coat Ceremony.

The Ceremony involves a formal robing of the students in doctors’ traditional wear, the white coat, which symbolises professionalism and compassion in patient care.

The students also took the medical Students’ Oath which read in part that they will practice medicine to the highest standards of conduct and seek what was best for their patients without allowing greed, stinginess and the desire for great reputation to corrupt them.

A former Dean of the SMS, Prof. Ivy A. E. Ekem, administered the SMS Oath to the students.

The visibly elated students received rapturous applause from management, lecturers, parents, relatives and friends as they donned the white coats emblazoned with their names.

At the ceremony,  the Chief Executive Officer of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Dr. Eric Kofi Ngyedu, in a brief remark, congratulated the students on completion of the basic science portion of medicine and advised them to show respect and compassion towards their patients without discrimination.

The CEO added that every patient had the right to be given quality health care with due recognition and respect.

Dr. Ngyedu told the students to be guided by the ethics of the profession and reminded them of the oaths that they had sworn to serve.

Dr Akosua Owusu Sarpong, Central Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), on her part, urged the students to take their studies seriously to support the medical services in the country.

She asked the students to join group discussions to learn from their peers and also religiously study ethical practices, as well as customer care.

"Treat patients humanly by adopting Customer care" she added.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof Rosemond Boohene, who chaired the Ceremony, challenged them to build on the frontiers of knowledge.

"We want to see our medical students understanding that they have to prepare for technology that has not been invented, jobs that have not been created, challenges that have not been seen" she added.

She encouraged them to justify the investment made in them by their parents and guardians.

As a gesture of goodwill, the students presented assorted items to the various departments under the SMS.
