Dept. of Physician Assistant Studies engages students

The Department of Physician Assistant Studies has held a consultative meeting with students to discuss pertinent issues about their academic and welfare concerns for the forward march of the Department.

 

The gathering afforded opportunity for faculty members and students to discuss a wide range of issues within the Department in particular and the University at large.

 

Among the attendees were faculty members, administrators and students from levels 100 to 400.

Addressing the meeting, the Head, Department of Physician Assistant Studies, Dr. Stephen Ocansey, congratulated the fresh students on their admission into the Department and tasked them to take their studies seriously.

He explained that the Department received 100 freshers for level 100 and 12 students for level 200.

Dr. Ocansey pointed out that 110 students were transferred from the Christian Service University College into UCC to pursue Physician Assistant Studies in levels 100,200, 300 and 400.

He announced that plans were afoot to seek the services of 30 part-time lecturers and demonstrators to teach the newly-introduced Physician Assistant Dental Therapy.

Following the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department and Marist College in USA, Dr. Ocansey announced that the Department would receive students from the College in May 2023 for clinical rotation.

He expressed his resolve to make such interactions with various stakeholders a regular feature of the Department's work.

The Heads of Units under the Department took turns to address barrage of questions asked by the students.

The Vice-Dean of the School of Sustainable Engineering (SSE) under the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (CANS), Prof. Ing. Samuel Kofi Tulashie, has been honoured at the Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) night held at the Engineering Centre in Accra.

The event, organised by the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE), was on the theme: “Engineering: Resilence in the Face of Climate Change and Pandemic.”

Prof. Ing. Tulashie  received the  Research, Academic and Industrial , as well as Concept and Innovation awards.

The EEA Ghana is a National Award honouring the outstanding contribution of an individual or organisation to promoting engineering excellence and innovations as well as engineering students showing great potential for research.

Prof. Ing. Tulashie, made this known when he paid a courtesy call on the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, at her office.

For her part, Prof. Boohene congratulated Prof. Ing. Tulashie on his awards, while urging him not to rest on his laurels.

She urged the awardee to “ see the sky as his limit” and endeavour to win more laurels for the University.

“ I believe that the sky is the limit and so if we work  very hard, we can achieve greater heights.

Prof. Boohene added that the feat chalked up by Prof. Ing. Tulashie was testament of the fact that  the School of Sustainable Engineering had the quality human resource  to deepen the visibility of the University.

" ...this is the beginning of greater things in the faculty of Engineering and UCC at Large," she noted.

 

 Present at the meeting were the Dean, School of Physical Sciences, Prof. Emmanuel K. Essel, and the Founding Dean of the SSE, Prof. Robert Sarpong Amoah.

Salisbury University Nursing Students Visit UCC

The School of Nursing of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has hosted Nursing students from Salisbury University, USA,   as part of study Abroad Exchange Programme between the two universities.
 
The students, numbering seven (7), will seek practical exposure on Ghana Health systems. 
 
The visit also seeks to equip the students with basic knowledge to enable them appreciate their field of study and the interaction with students and faculty of UCC. 
 
The School of Nursing-UCC has close partnership with the School of Nursing at the Salisbury University. 
 
The Dean of the School of Nursing-UCC, Dr. Nancy Ebu Enyan, who welcomed the students and Faculty of SU, walked the students through the academic programmes offered by the School of Nursing. 
 
She said the School was in touch with Salisbury University to explore research opportunities for both undergraduate and post-graduate training and noted that the arrival of the visiting students would further deepen the collaboration with Salisbury University.

 
A Fulbright scholar from the School of Nursing, Salisbury University, Prof. Tina Reid, for her part, said the students came to Ghana to explore the Ghana Health System and to know the Nursing programme offered by UCC. 
 
She extended gratitude to School of Nursing - UCC for the warm reception.
 
There were presentations on Ghana Health systems,Ghanaian culture, amongst others.
 
The students also toured academic facilities within UCC.

 

Fresh students of College of Humanities and legal studies receiving orientation

UCC holds orientation for fresh students

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has held a three-day orientation programme for fresh students. 


The orientation, which was held at the college level, was to create awareness of the University’s rules and regulations as well as provide platform for them to interact with University Officials on matters relating to their academic work in the University. 


Addressing the fresh students, the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Eugene Dartey, advised them to abide by the rules and regulations that govern students' conduct and keep off activities that would not contribute positively to their future.


He urged the fresh students to focus on their education and not allow negative influence of others affect them, adding that they should be disciplined, punctual and attend lectures regularly.


Prof. Dartey encouraged them to set goals for themselves in terms of desired grades to serve as motivation to work hard towards achieving them.


The Dean reminded the students that the onus of realizing their abilities lies solely on them and the efforts they put into their academic work.


The students were taken through topics such as Disability Services, Library Services, Sexual Harassment, Security, Counselling Services, amongst others.

UCC Students receive scholarships from Goldfields Ghana

Fourty-eight students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) have received full scholarships from GoldFields Ghana Foundation.
 
The beneficiaries who were selected mainly  from Tarkwa (29 students) and Damang (19 students) host communities, received GH¢115,000.
 
The scholarship covers full Academic Facility User Fees of the beneficiaries for the 2022 /2023 academic year.
 
Speaking at a short handover ceremony, the  Vice President in charge of Operations at Gold Fields West Africa, Michael Van Der Merwe, said the support was part of Gold Fields Ghana Foundation’s scholarship scheme which had since 2002 supported 2,448 youth from both Tarkwa and Damang, host communities to achieve quality education.
 
He indicated that the scholarship package was one of the benefits for residents in mining communities. 
 
“These beneficiary students will not worry about the payment of their fees or any increase whether they  are schooling at UCC, KNUST, UMAT or UG,” he added.
 
Mr. Merwe announced that the Foundation was paying a total sum of GH C 779, 583. 50 to cover for  accommodation, examination, and other approved charges. 
 
He added: “The Foundation has introduced the bulk payment of Academic Facility User Fees (AFUF) on behalf of the 325 beneficiaries in the four Universities. 
 
This has helped to eliminate the delays that are sometimes associated with receiving bills directly from students which in turn affects their registration each academic year.”
 
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Education Minister, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour and representatives from institutions of the benfeciary  students.
 
For her part, the Administrator at the Students’ Financial Support Office, Ms Grace Mensah, expressed gratitude to GoldFields Ghana Foundation  for the nice gesture.
 
Ms. Mensah later presented a dummy cheque on behalf of the beneficiary students from UCC to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, at her office.
 
 
 
 
 

Prof. Akua Opokua Britwum Launches book on TUC Ghana

A professor of Labour and Human Resource Studies at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Prof. Akua Britwum , has launched a book that chronicles the seventy-five-year existence of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Ghana in Accra. 

 
Titled: " Trade Union Congress (Ghana)Seventy-five Years of Protecting Worker's Rights: Achievements, Challenges and Prospects," the book explains events that led to the creation and development of the TUC Ghana from the colonial rule in the Gold Coast to 2020. 
 
It also emphasises the crucial role TUC Ghana played in the fight for independence. 
 
The book points out the critical ingredients that has influenced the kind of environment governments established for the TUC-Ghana has been and how it promoted the concerns of Ghanaians against their survival of ruling elite and the interests of private foreign capital. 
 
It also documents the struggle of the TUC as a social institution with patriarchy, focusing on its attempts to deal with its gender democracy deficits over the years. 
 
The book also highlights the recent organising initiatives with the youth, as well as the vision of union leaders, outlining prospects that can make the TUC Ghana uphold its role as a Labour movement that fills a significant lacuna in Ghana's political space. 
 
Addressing the invitees, Prof. Britwum   encouraged all and sundry to get copies of the book and add to their knowledge and be abreast of the history of TUC Ghana. 
 
She said the value of worker's right was very much highlighted in the book and would serve as a guide to Ghanaian workforce.
 
The  book launch attracted TUC Ghana leadership, the clergy,traditional leaders and the general public.

UCC Hospital honours hard working staff

The Directorate Of University Health Services (DUHS) has honoured its hard-working staff at its annual end of year Staff Awards and Recognition ceremony.
 
The Deputy Director of DUHS Dr. James K. Prah, was adjudged the Best Clinician.
 
He received  a citation and a shield.
 
Other workers who were also outstanding in their services were awarded with certificates and citations.
 
They include Mr. Kwesi Kakraba and Emmanuel Tandoh all of the  Mortuary Department of the Hospital. 
 
In all, 73 staff members were honoured for  their selfless, commitment and boldness to the course of their duty. 
 
Speaking at the event, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof Rosemond Boohene,  who chaired the Ceremony, congratulated the award winners and charged the entire DUHS staff to work hard in the years ahead to contribute their quota to the development of the hospital. 
 
She promised a successful and fruitful year in 2023, but said it depends on the combined efforts of everybody to make it happen.
 
Prof. Boohene  urged management and staff to work harder to help the hospital chalk up more successes.
 
She reminded the healthcare workers of the need to focus more on the primary duty of providing quality health care to the people. 
 
For his part, the Director of DUHS, Dr. Evans Ekanem,  congratulated the awardees and attributed the successes attained by the hospital to the hard work of staff.
 
The Director said the awards were one of the surest ways to motivate staff to give off their best in taking care of the hospital's clients. 
 
He, therefore, called on all health workers to keep working hard even if they weren’t recognized.
 
The Director expressed profound gratitude to various associations that supported the hospital materially and financially.
 
He said the facility was faced with challenges such as inadequate accommodation, staff and vehicles, stressing that the difficulties would not prevent the hospital from making a strong statement on its vision to become a centre of choice.
 
Dr. Ekanem mentioned rebuildings of the mortuary and maternity ward were part of the future plans of the hospital. 
 
Some of the workers who spoke to the media expressed appreciation to management of the hospital for recognising their work and urged their colleagues to work hard and show love to the patients for the betterment of the hospital.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Receives General Manager of Japan Motors Trading Company

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, has received the General Manager of Japan Motors Trading Company, JMTC, Mr. Amine Kabara, to the University during a courtesy visit.

The visit was to invite the management of the University of Cape Coast to the Company’s brand-new state-of-the-art Nissan Assembly Plant at Tema.

Mr. Kabara noted that the $ 9 million Assembly Plant, commissioned by President Akufo-Addo in March 2022, was producing new Nissan Navara vehicles.

He described the long-standing relationship between the University and the Company as apt, saying the Company was always ready to provide high-powered vehicles to the University.

For her part, Prof. Rosemond Boohene said UCC had been patronizing the vehicles of JMTC and asked the Company to put up a Vehicle Service Centre at the campus of the University.

She told the delegation about the newly-established School of Sustainable Engineering and stated that the School would be glad to collaborate with the Company to facilitate technology transfer and promote hands-on practical skills acquisition opportunities for students and faculty.

Prof. Boohene enlisted the support of Japan Motors Trading Company towards the Vice-Chancellor’s vision to establish a Biomedical Research Centre.

Present at the meeting were Stephen Kofi Nti, the Takoradi Branch Manager of JMTC; Mr. Akwetey Ahingwah, the Takoradi Deputy Branch Manager of JMTC and Mr. Francis Ntow, the Sales Consultant of JMTC.

CEGRAD Organises Adolescent Symposium for Pre-SHS and Pre-Tertiary Students

The Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation, CEGRAD of the University of Cape Coast, has organised an adolescent symposium for over 400 Pre-Senior High School and Pre-Tertiary Students within the Cape Coast Metropolis.

The symposium, which forms part of the outreach programme of CEGRAD, was aimed at sensitizing the students on gender-based violence.

The beneficiary students were taken through topics such as Introduction to Life on Secondary School/Tertiary campus, Understanding Gender, Adolescent Reproductive Health and Cohabitation Issues.

 The rest were Communication among Young People and Digital Technology and Safety Issues.

The Central Regional Director for Gender Department, Madam Richlove Amamoo, stressed the need for teenagers to focus on their future goals rather than emulating the behaviour of bad friends. She advised the students to shy away from negative peer influence and said it was sad that some young girls indulged in pre-marital sex resulting in teenage pregnancies and other social problems.

“Everyone has a different destiny hence you should not allow your peers to influence you,” She counselled.

The Central Regional Gender Director tasked the students to take advantage of the opportunities in society to enhance their capabilities for the betterment of humanity.

She urged parents not to shirk their responsibilities towards their children but to ensure that the children had good education, which would ensure their future success. Madam Amamoo also urged parents to be vigilant in ensuring good morals among their female children to enable them to achieve their goals.

She urged all stakeholders to play significant roles in championing the girl child’s education, particularly in deprived communities, for them to be responsible citizens.

The Director for CEGRAD, Dr. Georgina Yaa Oduro, in her remarks, advised young girls to shun their obsession with gifts from irresponsible men, especially during the Christmas festivities.

She said: “You shouldn’t allow your poor circumstances, wanting to get gifts for Christmas trap you into an engagement that will make you regret it forever...”

Master Alex Owusu and Miss Mensah Jacqueline, participants in the symposium, expressed gratitude to CEGRAD for the exposure and promised to share the knowledge with their peers.

UCC team in Zimbabwe

UCC Opens Exhibition at RUFORUM 2022 in Zimbabwe

A team from the University of Cape Coast, UCC, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has opened UCC's exhibition at the 18th Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) Annual General Meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe.

 

The exhibition, which started on December 12, 2022, enabled patrons to catch a glimpse of a range of UCC photos on display showcasing activities of the University from the past to the present. 

 

At the occasion, the University also showcased its achievements in research and innovations as the number one University in Ghana and West Africa, fourth in Africa, twenty-fourth in terms of research influence globally and among the top four hundred (400) universities globally. 

 

The Exhibition also afforded the University the opportunity to explore, forge new partnerships, network and build international linkages to progressively achieve its vision of becoming a University that is strongly positioned with worldwide acclaim.

 

Amongst the patrons who visited the UCC stand was Prof. Intisar Al-Zein Saghiroun, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Government of Sudan. 

 

Some patrons, both locals and foreigners, who visited the stand expressed keen interest in enrolling in UCC in the near future.

 

UCC was among one hundred and forty (140) Universities from the African continent that exhibited at the AGM.
