16 Feb, 2023 By DIS

A section of senior members (academic) of the College of Health and Allied Sciences (CoHAS), University of Cape Coast (UCC) are participating in a workshop on Grant and Proposal Writing at the Coconut Grove Hotel in Cape Coast.

The workshop, which will span a five-day period, is being organised by the Biomedical and Clinical Research Centre of CoHAS-UCC in collaboration with African Centre of Excellence for Population, Health and Policy, as well as Bayero University, Kano in Nigeria.

The mandate of the Centre is to promote research and grantsmanship within CoHAS in particular and the University of Cape Coast in general.

Topics to be treated by the participants during the five-day workshop include; ‘Understanding the funder and knowing the funder requirements’, ‘An overview of the grant scoring process’ and ‘Overview of study designs for qualitative studies’. Others are ‘Data management’, ‘Defining your output/outcome/impact variables’, ‘Overview of mixed-method research’ and ‘Budgeting’ amongst others.

Addressing the participants during the opening ceremony, the Director of the Biomedical and Clinical Research Centre, Prof. Samuel Kyei, observed that the workshop would improve grant proposal writing skills, and foster more collaborations among lecturers within the University and with external partners.

"While in our jurisdiction the mantra is “publish or perish", elsewhere it is to get a grant or perish. This new demand to get grant or perish is catching up with us quickly and as an institution, we need to up our game before it is too late" he said.

The Director was of the hope that UCC-industry relationship would be enhanced as the research output from "our University could be translated into finished products and or inform policy for the benefit of society."

The Provost of CoHAS, Prof. Martins Ekor, in his remark, entreated participants to take the workshop seriously and noted that research by academics in the College would put UCC on a giant pedestal.

He said UCC had made remarkable strides in research, stressing that participants should be able to get grants to explore new ideas and expertise in research after the workshop.

Facilitators for the workshop are from the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) - UCC, University of Ghana, and Bayero University.

There will also be networking and brainstorming sessions, where issues regarding grant and proposal writing will be discussed.

UCC holds orientation for BSc. Nursing and Midwifery students in Health Training Institutions

14 Feb, 2023 By DIS

An orientation programme has been held for fresh students admitted to pursue UCC Bachelor of Science programmes in Nursing and Midwifery at selected 15 Health Training Institutions in the country.

The first session of the orientation was held at Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Tamale in the Northern Region; Nursing and Midwifery Training School, Kpembe in the Savanna Region; College of Nursing and Midwifery, Nalerigu in the North East Region; Midwifery Training College, Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region; St. Joseph’s Midwifery Training College, Jirapa in the Upper West Region.

The remaining institutions are Holy Family Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Techiman in the Bono East Region and Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

Addressing students in their respective institutions, the head of Institutional Affiliation Office, Dr. Justice Agyenim Boateng, noted that the programme had been rolled out in various Health Training Institutions to bring quality university education to their doorstep on weekends.

He indicated that the programme was introduced at the Health Training Institutions in response to several calls on the University from stakeholders in the health sector especially graduates of the UCC Diploma in Midwifery.

Dr. Boateng said UCC’s approach to academic work was exceptional and added that they would enjoy the best academic experience ever in their lifetime at the tertiary level.

“We are committed to excellence in all we do so it is not surprising that we are the best in Ghana West Africa and the fourth best institution in Africa” he stressed.

He explained that the University had adopted the blended mode of delivery thus virtual and face-to-face to enable students to access lectures from anywhere even in the comfort of their homes.

In his presentation, Dr. Boateng informed the students that before the commencement of the programme, the University organised a comprehensive workshop to prepare them to give them quality tuition through the physical and virtual engagements.

“Your tutors are not only going to adopt only the traditional method of teaching but they have also been exposed to how they could use multimedia applications and tools for teaching. You should be ready to use your phones to record videos of activities relating to the topics you will be learning for assessment,” he added.

The Head of Institution Affiliation encouraged the students to be punctual to both the face-to-face and virtual lectures and devote time for their studies.

Dr. Boateng had separate meetings with management and tutors of the institutions hosting the programme and reminded them that UCC would not compromise on its quality academic standards.

“We will be coming round to monitor face-to-face teaching and also participate in virtual sessions to ensure that our students receive quality tuition” he told them.

He noted that the University would continue to build their capacities to deliver quality content to the students.
