DHR-UCC holds 3-day Orientation for Newly Appointed Academic Officers and Study Leave Returnees

The Directorate of Human Resource (DHR) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has organised a three-day orientation programme for newly appointed Academic Office Holders and 2024 study leave returnees. 

The Academic Office Holders comprised newly appointed Deans, Acting Deans, Vice Deans, Acting Academic Director, Deputy Directors, Heads of Department, and School Coordinators. The 2024 Study Leave Returnees consisted of faculty members returning from study leave and newly appointed faculty members.

Speaking at the event, the Director of Human Resource, Mr. Isaac Adom-Konadu, welcomed the newly appointed staff and returnees, emphasizing the importance of the orientation to equip them for their roles in the University.

He stated, "This programme is designed to provide you with the necessary insights and tools to effectively contribute to the development of UCC. We believe that through this orientation, you will gain valuable knowledge that will enhance your performance."

The Registrar, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye (Esq.), in an address, encouraged the participants to be actively involved in the sessions. 

He further highlighted the significance of the orientation, noting that it played a crucial role in preparing staff for their responsibilities. 

He added, "In the end, you will be well-equipped to work in the University and help improve the University."

Mr. Abbeyquaye also urged participants to apply the knowledge gained from the programme in their professional conduct.

HSWU Inaugurates Tertiary Club at UCC to Prepare Students for Unionism

The Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, has officially inaugurated the HSWU Tertiary Club at the University of Cape Coast (UCC). The event marked the club's establishment on campus to equip students with knowledge about union activities before transitioning into the job market.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Central Regional Youth Chairman for HSWU, Mr. Prince Tony Lokko, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences for supporting the initiative. He described the formation of the club as a crucial step toward the growth of HSWU.

“This marks the beginning of an exciting journey of growth and excellence,” he emphasized, encouraging students to take an active interest in unionism as it plays a vital role in shaping their professional lives.

The Central Regional Chairman of HSWU, Mr. Joseph E. Anowie, officiated the induction ceremony, swearing in the newly elected executives of the club. Addressing the students, he underscored the importance of understanding unionism and its impact on their future careers.

“It is important for students to understand unionism and to be empowered before they enter the job market,” he stated.

He further advised the newly inducted leaders to be diligent in their responsibilities and serve as exemplary ambassadors of the union.

The Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, Prof. Desmond Omane Acheampong, congratulated the newly sworn-in executives and commended HSWU for extending its reach to tertiary institutions.

“We are happy to receive you and give you all the necessary support to work,” he assured. He further encouraged the club members to take full advantage of the platform to develop leadership skills and gain insights into labour rights and professional advocacy.

The inauguration of the HSWU Tertiary Club at UCC marks a significant milestone in bridging the gap between students and unionized labour, fostering early engagement in union activities to prepare them for the professional world.

The newly inducted executives of the HSWU Tertiary Club at UCC are Lewis Ajabu as chairperson; Adeporka Awinibota Peter – Vice-Chairperson; Noah Sunkwa – Secretary and Jessica Araba Mensah – Deputy Secretary. The rest include Sheriff Adam Suraj as 1st Trustee, Janet Amesi – 2nd Trustee and Jessica Esaba Ampah – Organizer.

UCC signs MoU with Private Security Agency

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has signed an agreement with private security firm, Possibility Security Services Limited, to provide security services on campus.

Personnel of Possibility Security Services Limited will work collaboratively with the regular UCC security to protect lives and property.

The Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, signed on behalf of UCC, while the General Manager of Possibility Security Services, Mr. Moro Danladi, initialed for his firm.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Boampong advised the new security personnel to take good care of students and staff in the discharge of their duties.

He also called on staff and students to offer the security personnel the maximum support and respect for them to deliver on their mandate effectively.

The Vice-Chancellor urged the security officers to abide by the channel of communication in the University to make their work efficient.

For his part, Mr. Moro Danladi expressed gratitude to the management of UCC for the confidence reposed in Possibility Security Services and for recognizing the importance of their services in ensuring security.

He promised that his firm would provide adequate security on campus to enable students and staff to go about their normal duties.

DoBSSE donates to St. Philip Quaque Boys' & St. Cyprian Anglican Basic Schools

The Department of Business and Social Sciences Education (DoBSSE) has donated a collection of books to the St. Philip Quaque Boys' Anglican Basic School and St. Cyprian Anglican Basic School in Cape Coast. 

The donation forms part of the "School Adoption" programme instituted by the College of Education Studies.

Speaking during the presentation, the Head of Department, Dr. Anthony Akwesi Owusu said the donation, which was made possible through the department's collaboration with the UCC Basic School, aims to enhance the educational experiences of students at the school.

Dr. Owusu said the department would continue to support the school in various ways to enhance teaching and learning.

Receiving the donation, the Assistant Headteacher of the school, Mrs. Deborah Lawertey, who stood in for the headteacher, thanked the department for the gesture and assured the team that the books would be put to good use.

Coordinator at the Cape Coast Metropolitan Education Office, Mr. Ewusie Hackman,  who oversees the "School Adoption" programme, also commended the DoBSSE for its intended plans to organise training workshops for teachers.

He noted that the workshops would have a positive impact on the quality of education delivery at the school.

1.0              Lecturer

The candidate must:

·         Possess a PhD with specialization in one or more of the fields of study listed above or a closely-related academic area;

·         Have some professional experience in the specific area;

·         Demonstrate potential and interest to undertake research and to excel in teaching; and

·         Have a commitment to excellent teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

 

2.0       Senior Lecturer

The candidate must:

·         Possess a PhD qualification in the relevant field of specialisation;

·         Have served for a minimum of four (4) years as a Lecturer in a university or analogous institution; and

·         Have a minimum of five (5) refereed publications in his/her area of specialization for the rank of Senior Lecturer.

 

3.0  Associate Professor

The candidate must:

·         Satisfy the academic qualifications specified for Senior Lecturer;

·         Have at least seven (7) refereed publications in his/her area of specialisation since his/her last appointment as Senior Lecturer; and

·         Have taught for a minimum of four (4) years in a university or analogous institution as a Senior Lecturer.

 

4.0     Professor

       The candidate must:

·         Satisfy the academic qualifications specified for Associate Professor;

·         Possess a PhD qualification in the relevant field of specialization;

·         Have taught for a minimum of two (2) years as Associate Professor or have considerable number of years of teaching/research experience in a university or analogous institution; and

·         Have at least eight (8) refereed publications in his/her area of specialisation since his/her last appointment as an Associate Professor or must have a total of twenty (20) refereed publications since appointment as Senior Lecturer. In all cases, the publications should be passed by external assessors.

The appointment to a professorial rank shall be by tenure.

Applicants are expected to show evidence of a commitment to: (a) equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment; and (b) advancement of research and scholarship, and willingness to learn new approaches and techniques of teaching and research.

Call for Admissions and Scholarships under the TAGDev 2.0 Programme: Application Deadline Extended to 15th June, 2025.

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, Gulu University (Uganda), Egerton University (Kenya), Africa University (Zimbabwe), University of Free State (South Africa), Malawi University of Science and Technology (Malawi), University of Eldoret (Kenya), Uganda Martyrs University (Uganda), University of Port Harcourt (Nigeria), University of Cape Coast (Ghana), University of Bamenda (Cameroon), National University of Agriculture (Benin), and Université Mohammed VI Polytechnique (Morocco) are implementing a 10 year programme (2023-2033) called Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0). The programme seeks to strengthen universities and TVET institutions to better serve communities by skilling and empowering Africa’s young people and their institutions to drive inclusive, equitable and climate resilient transformation of agriculture and agrifood systems. The TAGDev 2.0 programme will support young African students that are economically disadvantaged but academically competent to access university education. The scholarship is open to both female and male applicants. However, females, refugees, internally displaced persons, and persons with disabilities and those interested in Bachelor of Science in Horticulture are highly encouraged to apply.

    The Pro Vice-Chancellor with executives of UTAG

    UTAG-UCC Executives Congratulate Pro Vice-Chancellor

    The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), UCC Chapter has congratulated Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto on his recent appointment as Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.

    During a courtesy visit to Prof. Aheto’s office, UTAG President, Dr. Jerry Opoku Ansah expressed the union's support and pride in his achievements, particularly his impactful leadership as Director of the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR). Dr. Ansah was optimistic that Prof. Aheto would bring his experience to bear in his new role for the advancement of the University.

    The UTAG President also urged Prof. Aheto to address the concern of inadequate lecture halls and offices, which he noted had placed significant stress on faculty. Additionally, Dr. Ansah emphasized the need for improved motivation and enhanced health services for both UTAG members and the wider support staff and students.

    In response, Prof. Aheto thanked the executives for their support during his application process and acknowledged the challenges faced by teaching staff. He reassured them that management was actively working to resolve these issues. He said the completion of a new office complex for lecturers would bring relief to lecturers.

    “We are committed to creating a conducive environment for lecturers, support staff, and students to enhance teaching, learning, and research,” Prof. Aheto stated. He also mentioned that the Vice-Chancellor had tasked him to lead some teams to tackle various challenges confronting the University.

    Prof. Aheto expressed gratitude for the resounding support from UTAG members and assured them that he would collaborate with the Vice-Chancellor to build on the University's achievements.

    Other UTAG executives present at the meeting included Vice-President Dr. (Mrs.) Joana Eva Doodo, Secretary Prof. Isaac Buabeng, and Treasurer Dr. Beatrice Asante Somuah, the Women Executive Officer, Dr. Martha Osei-Marfo. The Senior Assistant Registrar, at the Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Mr. Alfred Ghartey was also at the meeting.
