UCC Marks 2025 World Water Day with a Call to Protect Water Bodies

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has commemorated the 2025 World Water Day with a passionate call for collective action to protect water bodies. 

The event, organised under the auspices of the School of Sustainable Engineering, brought together stakeholders, environmental experts, lecturers, administrators, students from tertiary and senior high schools, and members of the public to discuss the urgent need for sustainable water management.

The theme for the celebration, “Preservation Glaciers (Rivers)” highlights the significance of glaciers as natural freshwater reservoirs. It is estimated that glaciers store approximately 69% of the world's freshwater, gradually releasing it into rivers and lakes, which sustains drinking water supplies, agriculture, and hydroelectric power generation.

Speaking at the event, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, noted that the commemoration of World Water Day put a spotlight on the global water crisis and advocated sustainable water resource management.

“Water is life, yet over 2.2 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water. Many communities, particularly in developing countries, rely on rivers, lakes, and underground water sources for survival,” he noted.

Prof. Aheto lamented the devastating impact of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, on Ghana’s water bodies. He was worried that rivers and lakes were being polluted with harmful chemicals such as mercury and cyanide, making them unsafe for consumption and causing harm to aquatic life. 

“The destruction of our water bodies is also depleting fish stocks and threatening biodiversity. If we do not take decisive action now, future generations will suffer dire consequences,” he warned.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor urged all stakeholders, including government agencies, educational institutions, and local communities, to join forces to protect Ghana’s water resources. 

In his address, the Central Regional Director, Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Omanhene Kwaku Boateng, mentioned the recent cholera outbreaks, water shortages, and the alarming pollution levels in vital water bodies such as the Pra and Kakum rivers as urgent indicators of a looming crisis.

“These incidents should serve as a clarion call for all of us to act now,” he noted and called for urgent action to address these pressing issues.​

He urged the academic community to intensify research efforts and propose cost-effective methods for preserving and producing clean, hygienic water for both domestic and commercial use.

Mr. Boateng called upon students to take an active role in environmental conservation by initiating tree-planting projects along the banks of rivers and other water bodies.  He said this would help restore degraded ecosystems and safeguard water resources for future generations.

The Head of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, School of Sustainable Engineering, UCC, Prof. Albert Ebo Duncan, pointed out that while approximately 71 per cent of the Earth's surface was covered by water, only about 2.5 percent of this is freshwater, with the vast majority being saline.

 He further noted that a significant portion of this freshwater was trapped in glaciers and ice caps, leaving less than one per cent readily available for human use.  

“There is a saying that goes ‘water is life.’ If that saying is true, then all the water bodies would not be facing pollution, deforestation, extraction, and other threats,” he emphasized.

Prof. Duncan noted that the event was a reminder of the collective responsibility of all to ensure the sustainability and health of water resources for future generations.

a.      Head Chef

 

i)       Job Description

The Chinese Cuisine Chef will be responsible for developing a menu of Chinese dishes, planning and cooking the dishes, and ensuring authentic taste and presentation. This role also involves supervising kitchen staff and operations, maintaining high culinary standards, and ensuring that food safety regulations are strictly adhered to. 

 

ii)     Qualifications 

§  At least a Diploma in Chinese culinary skills or a related area.

§  At least five (5) years of proven experience as a Chinese Chef or similar role.

§  In-depth knowledge of Chinese culinary techniques and ingredients.

§  Strong leadership and team management skills.

§  Knowledge of food safety regulations and standards.

§  Knowledge of the Chinese language will be an added advantage.

 

b.     Restaurant Supervisor

 

i)       Job Description

The Restaurant Supervisor will supervise all activities in the dining area including staff and student scheduling and manage work hours. He/she will also ensure exceptional customer service, keep records of dining inventory and serve as a liaison between Faculty and the commercial production section. 

 

ii)     Qualifications 

§  A good first degree in hospitality or catering management

§  Knowledge of restaurant operations

§  Skills in food production and food service

§  Good leadership, administrative and interpersonal skills

 

c.       Technician

i)       Job Description

The Restaurant Technician is responsible for the maintenance of Kitchen and food service equipment and facilities. The technician will be responsible for troubleshooting, repairing equipment and performing preventive maintenance on equipment and training of staff on the proper use of equipment and safety procedures. He/she will ensure the proper use of equipment and compliance with safety procedures.

 

ii)    Qualifications

§  At least Senior High School or technical school certificate (WASSCE/SSSCE)

§  At least one year working experience in a related field

§  Good interpersonal skills

Pro Vice-Chancellor Leads Delegation on Visit to UCC Affiliate Institutions

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, has led a delegation on a working visit to some affiliate institutions in the Greater Accra Region. 

The visit, which marks the first leg of the Pro Vice-Chancellor’s tour to affiliate institutions, forms part of UCC’s commitment to strengthening its ties with affiliate institutions. 

The Pro Vice-Chancellor’s delegation visited and interacted with management, staff and students of the School of Peri-Operative and Critical Care Nursing, School of Ophthalmic Nursing, Armed Forces College of Nursing and Midwifery (AFCoNM), and the CSIR College of Science and Technology.

During separate meetings with staff and students of these institutions, Prof. Aheto noted that the visit was to familiarise himself with their academic and operational activities; assess their needs, and explore ways to enhance UCC’s support services. He reaffirmed UCC’s dedication to providing quality mentorship by ensuring high academic standards, quality assurance, and improved administrative support for all its affiliates.

The engagements provided a platform for open discussions on challenges, academic development, and areas of collaboration. Key issues raised by the affiliate institutions included curriculum enhancement, faculty development, student support services, and research collaboration.

At the School of Critical Care Nursing and School of Ophthalmic Nursing in Korlebu, the Pro Vice-Chancellor's delegation was received by the two Principals of the two institutions, Mrs. Faustina Excel Adepa and Mrs. Roseline Bakudie. They made presentations on their respective institutions touching on overview of their institutions, success , challenges and future prospects.

The team then proceeded to the Armed Forces College of Nursing and Midwifery and interacted with the Principal, Major Bright Atta Addei, as well as the management, staff, and students at the college's campus within the precincts of the 37 Military Hospital.

The final institution the team visited was the CSIR College of Science and Technology campus located in Accra. UCC Signs MoU with University of Szeged, Hungary to Strengthen Academic Collaboration

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Szeged, Hungary, to establish academic collaboration in vocational and technical education, economics and tourism. 

The agreement is in line with UCC’s vision of establishing strategic global partnerships to enhance teaching, research, and capacity-building.

The Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, during an interaction with the delegation from University of Szeged, expressed excitement about the partnership. He expressed UCC’s commitment to expanding its international reach and collaboration with top universities worldwide.

"At UCC, we believe in building strong networks across the globe to promote academic excellence, research, and innovation. This partnership with the University of Szeged will open new opportunities for our students and faculty in key areas such as technical and vocational education, entrepreneurship, and economics," he stated.

Prof. Boampong highlighted the significance of the visit, noting with delight that Dr. Timothy Yaw Acheampong a product of UCC and a Research Fellow at the University of Szeged was part of the delegation. "It is inspiring to see that our alumni are making a global impact and contributing to the strengthening of international collaborations," he added.

Prof. Boampong further noted that UCC had been hosting students from North America and was open to welcoming learners from Europe and other continents as part of its internationalisation agenda. He said UCC was dedicated to training students to become global citizens, equipping them with skills, knowledge, and cultural competence needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. 

“We are preparing our students to be competitive on the global stage, ensuring they can contribute meaningfully wherever they find themselves,” he added.

On his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Szeged, Prof. Nagy Benedek reaffirmed his institution’s commitment to the partnership, stating that University of Szeged was among the top five universities in Hungary and has a strong reputation for academic excellence and research.

UCC TAGDev 2.0 Team Engages with Partners

A team from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) TAGDev 2.0 Programme has embarked on a collaborative visit to its partner institutions in the Northern and Bono regions of Ghana.

The partner institutions are University for Development Studies (UDS) and the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).

The UCC TAGDev 2.0 Programme is partnering with these two universities in Ghana, some selected Technical and Vocational Training (TVET) institutions and Departments of Agriculture in the Central, Volta, Bono and Northern regions to implement the programme.

This partnership aims to empower the youth to drive inclusive, equitable, and climate-resilient socio-economic development in their communities.

During an interaction with members of the Faculty of Agriculture in the two universities, the Coordinator of UCC TAGDev 2.0 Programme, Prof. Festus Annor-Frempong noted that the programme was a collaboration between RUFORUM and Mastercard Foundation, the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and life Sciences (GCHERA) and 12 African universities.

Prof. Annor-Frempong noted that programme sought to strengthen universities and TVET institutions to better serve communities by skilling and empowering Africa’s young people and their institutions to drive inclusive, equitable and climate-resilient transformation of agriculture and agrifood systems.

He indicated that as part of the partnership arrangement, UDS and UENR were expected to work with three Departments of Agriculture in selected district assemblies to expand work opportunities, improve on the skills and entrepreneurial opportunities for innovation, jobs and wealth creation targeting young people. He gave the assurance that UDS would collaborate with the TAGDev 2.0 team and continue to strengthen the collaboration to empower the youth in the districts under its jurisdiction.

Prof. Annor-Frempong also mentioned that the programme would offer scholarship opportunities for your young African students that are economically disadvantaged but academically competent to access university education. He announced that the scholarship was opened to both female and male applicants, however,  females, refugees, internally displaced persons, and persons with disabilities would be encouraged to apply.

Speaking at the forum at UDS, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Sciences, UDS, Nyankpala campus, Prof. Terry Ansah, said the UDS team together with its partners was well positioned to contribute their quota towards the success of the programme in the Northern Region of Ghana.

In the Northern region, UDS in partnership with the Department of Agriculture in the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly, Tolon District Assembly, and Kumbungu District Assembly are expected to focus on the expansion of the value chain and production of tomato and other vegetables and yam.

At UENR, the Dean of the School of Agriculture and Technology, Prof. John K. M. Kuwornu, and Registrar, Dr. Georgina Asi Owusu welcomed the team. Prof. Kuwornu was excited about the visit and indicated that UENR was looking forward to execute their share of the programme. He said they have facilities and the required expertise to work with the selected districts under its scope to achieve the set targets.

On the part of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, in conjunction with the Departments of Agriculture in Sunyani West Municipal Assembly, Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly and Berekum West District Assembly will be empowering young people to expand the cultivation and value chain for tomato and other vegetables, pineapple and cassava.

Also, the University of Energy and Natural Resources is collaborating with the Departments of Agriculture in Sunyani West Municipal Assembly, Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly, and Berekum West District Assembly. This initiative aims to empower young people to enhance the cultivation and value chain for tomatoes, vegetables, pineapples, and cassava.

Facilitate interdisciplinary work among postgraduate students – Prof. Dabo

The immediate past Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Ellis Owusu Dabo, has challenged universities in the country to explore ways of facilitating interdisciplinary work among postgraduate students.

That, according to him, would address one of the major gaps that many postgraduate programmes face as regards the lack of interdisciplinary opportunities.

Prof. Dabo was speaking at the 5th International Conference of Postgraduate Studies organised by the School of Graduate Studies at UCC.

It was on the Theme: “Transforming Communities: Postgraduate Education and Research for Resilience and Development in Africa.”

He added that universities must prioritize mental health support and create an enabling environment where students feel empowered to seek help when needed.

In that regard, he called for fostering a supportive community of peers, accessible mentors, and willing faculty.

According to him, Africa’s universities, research institutions, governments, and the private sector must collaborate to translate research findings into real-world solutions.

“Partnerships between African institutions and global counterparts can also facilitate sharing knowledge, resources, and best practices. This calls to mind the relevance and applicability of postgraduate education,” he added.

Prof. Dabo said postgraduate students and researchers must engage with the communities they aim to serve, ensuring that their work was not only relevant but also actionable. He added that postgraduate students should be encouraged to work with industry partners to ensure that their research is cutting-edge and has practical applications that can solve real-world problems. 

As technology, job markets, and societal needs evolve, Prof. Dabo indicated that it was essential to continuously update curricula to align with these changes.

“This ensures that students are equipped with the most current knowledge and skills.  A curriculum should prioritize the diverse needs of students, supporting their learning styles, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and practical problem-solving for community impact,” he continued.

He called on universities to focus on community-driven research, to foster a culture of resilience, where knowledge was used to both anticipate and respond to challenges.

He advised postgraduate students to approach their education with curiosity, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose and originality.

“You are the leaders and innovators of tomorrow; and tomorrow starts today with you and the choices you make. The knowledge you gain here will not only shape your careers but will also contribute to the future of this country and the global community.” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, in his opening remarks, said Postgraduate research must go beyond theoretical knowledge and be solution-driven as well as contextually relevant to the needs of our communities.

 He therefore called on African researchers to take the lead in finding innovative solutions to African challenges.

“In Educational studies, researchers can provide strategies and policies to improve learning outcomes and facilitate lifelong learning. In Health Sciences, postgraduate research can help develop locally applicable interventions for managing diseases like malaria, sickle cell, and emerging pandemics. In Business and Economics, researchers can provide data-driven strategies for economic resilience and industrial growth. In STEM, technological and engineering innovations can address infrastructural deficits and enhance productivity. In Environmental Science, research on climate change adaptation can safeguard the future of agriculture and natural resources.,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor said the theme of the conference underscored the important role postgraduate education played in equipping scholars with the tools and competencies necessary to drive societal change.

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, he added, climate challenges, economic uncertainties, and public health crises, resilience and sustainable development must be at the heart of research efforts across the continent.

Most Rev. Palmer-Buckle calls for education system geared towards holistic training of children

The Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cape Coast, the Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, has stressed the need for the Ghanaian education system to be designed to ensure total human development.

That, he said, would let the Ghanaian youth become future masters of their environment and globally competitive.

"I believe that if education has to fulfill its purpose of making a holistic human being, five virtues, namely, obedience (and self-discipline), wisdom, stature, the favour of God, and the love of one's neighbour, should form the pillars of our educational system, " he said.

Most Rev. Palmer-Buckle made the remarks when he took his turn as a human book to be read by students, drawn from some second-cycle institutions in Cape Coast and the University of Cape Coast (UCC), at the fourth edition of the Human Library initiative by the Sam Jonah Library-UCC.

The Human Library is a scientific service in libraries across the globe designed to build a positive framework for conversations through dialogue. It is a library where a person, instead of a book, is borrowed to listen to life stories.  The goal is to understand the different journeys taken in life and how to navigate an experience one encounters.

The Most Rev. Palmer-Buckle, speaking on the topic, "Influence of Spirituality on Academic Performance", said obedience was the first ingredient for any quality enterprise in education, as character formation was the basic goal of education.

“To develop the students, the spirit of obedience, which leads to self-discipline, must be imbibed to enhance their lives' self-control drive.”

He urged academics to move away from the Ivory Tower and rather be visible models of obedience and self-discipline in all spheres of life, pointing out that the ingredient of obedience was missing in today's society.

He advised the students to grow up in stature, which he said was to grow up to be healthy, physically sound human beings. In other words, a healthy mind can dwell in a healthy body."

According to the Archbishop, education should not only lead to good grades obtained in class but also spiritual fortitude necessary to guide one through life.

He charged parents and guardians to help their children fulfill the purpose of God in their lives.

"When we talk about spirituality, every child has a purpose that the Lord has created for him or her and yours is to help the child fulfill what God has planned for him or her," he added.

For her part, the Head of the Department of Client Services at the Sam Jonah Library, Dr. Gloria Tachie-Donkor, in a remark said the Human Library Forum was to ensure that students know the life of experienced persons in society so they take a leaf out of their lives.

            ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

1.  A good HND or Diploma in either Statistics or Health Information, preferably first class, second class (upper or lower) division or its equivalent from a recognized tertiary institution.

2. Certificate in Health Information Management from the University of Cape Coast  (UCC).

ii.         CERTIFICATE/ACCESS COURSE IN HEALTH INFORMATION OR ITS EQUIVALENT

(a). Applicants with six weeks and/or six months certificate from Kintampo or any recognized institution would be admitted into a two (2) semester Certificate (Access) Course.

1. Applicants for the Certificate (Access) course must have a minimum of D or C6 in                English Language and Mathematics

2. Applicants with six weeks and/or six months certificate in Health Records will have to     pass an entrance examination and interview

3. The entrance examination will consist of an aptitude test and a general paper.  Candidates who pass all the papers in the entrance examination will then qualify for an interview

Note:  all candidates will be required to pass a selection interview

DURATION

i.       Four (4) long vacation periods (8 weeks each) for the Degree programme to be completed within two (2) years

ii.    Two (2) long vacation periods (8 weeks each) for Certificate/Access Course to be completed within one (1) year.

       Applicants must:

i.    Possess a good HND / Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, preferably first class, second class (upper or lower) division or its equivalent from a recognized tertiary institution

ii.   Applicants with BSc. in Applied Biology, Biological Sciences, Laboratory Technology or any other science-related programme with a minimum of two years post qualification experience in the Clinical Laboratory are eligible to apply

2.      ACCESS/CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME INTO BSc. MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE i. Applicants should be 25 years and above and must have practiced medical    laboratory science for a minimum of three yearsii. Applicants must have a minimum of credit passes in English and Mathematics    and a certificate in Medical Laboratory from a recognized institution

·         Applicants with HND laboratory technology also qualify to enroll in the programme.  Successful applicants will be invited for an interview.

The sandwich programmes are non-residential, and students outside Cape Coast will be responsible for securing their own accommodation on campus. There are accommodation options in the halls of residence to choose from.

Department of French-UCC and CATRIM Consulting hold Capacity-Building Seminar on Translation and Interpretation

The Department of French at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), in collaboration with CATRIM Consulting in Côte d'Ivoire, has organised a Capacity-Building Seminar on Translation and Interpretation themed, "Translation and Interpretation as Strategic Tools for Organizational Growth."

The event emphasised the significance of translation and interpretation in society and marked the launch of the "Professional Training in Translation and Interpretation Initiative" by the Department of French and CATRIM Consulting.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and Head of the Department of French, Prof. Mawuloe K. Kodah, stated that the seminar was the second under the partnership between CATRIM Consulting and the Department of French.

He indicated that the programme was designed to equip language professionals with the necessary skills to become effective translators and interpreters.

"This is the time to learn from seasoned professionals and network," he emphasized.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Timothy Kwakuvi Wodokpoe, General Secretary of the Ghana Association of Translators and Interpreters (GATI), described the event as a strategic investment in translators and interpreters' collective future, also commended the Department for the initiative.

"In our increasingly interconnected world, the ability to bridge inter-linguistic differences is very important. GATI is more than pleased to be associated with this programme, and we are committed to supporting it," he added.

He further emphasized the practical impact of translation, saying expert translators in legal proceedings, for example, could ensure a fair trial, or having translators in hospitals could ensure effective medical proceedings.

The keynoter for the seminar, Mr. Ofosu Addo-Danquah, a retired Senior Lecturer in African and French Literature, Civilisations, and Translation Studies speaking on "Skill Sets of Bilingual Employees outlined the essential principles of translation.

He mentioned accuracy and fidelity, context and purpose, consistency and clarity, as well as natural language and fluency as important range of skills translators must possess.

"Every translator should have these skills, which include linguistic, technical, and soft skills, as well as cultural and subject matter expertise," he stressed.

A former Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Domwini Dabire Kuupole, officially launched the Professional Training in Translation and Interpretation Initiative.

He explained that the programme was aimed at producing translators and interpreters for international languages such as French, English, and Chinese, as well as indigenous languages like Akan, Ewe, and Ga.

Participants in the seminar were taken through different themes including; ‘Simultaneous Interpretation of conversations with clients in a business meeting’, ‘Techniques for effective in-house translation’ and ‘Workplace Translation Resources.’ There was also a panel discussion which focused on “Building Vocabulary in Corporate English/French.”

Mfantsipim Old Boys Congratulate Registrar, Pledge Support

The Central Regional branch of the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA) has paid a courtesy call to Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye (Esq) at his office to congratulate him on his recent appointment as the Registrar of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

The delegation was led by the President of the branch, Dr. Kenneth Aikins, who described Mr. Abbeyquaye as a dedicated and results-driven professional whose vast experience in administration makes him the ideal person for the well-deserved elevation to the leadership of Ghana’s topmost-ranked university.

The delegation congratulated Mr. Abbeyquaye on behalf of all members of MOBA.

They commended the new Registrar for his hard work that propelled him to his current position, adding that his elevation reflected the motto of their alma mater, “Dwen Hwe Kan” which translates to mean “Think ahead”.

He stressed that he would always be proud of the School for instilling discipline in him during his formative years.

Mr. Abbeyquaye thanked Dr. Aikins and the team for the courtesy call and best wishes in his new role.
