19 Dec, 2016 By louis Mensah

The Department of Music and Dance has held a concert of music in memory of the late Dr. Joe Atta-Quartey, an alumni and a former lecturer of the Department, to round-off its activities for the semester.

The late Dr. Joe Atta-Quartey, who was described as an “Ace Conductor”, because of the dexterity he showed when leading choirs, promoted research and choral music in the University of Cape Coast.

Speaking at the concert, held at the Main Auditorium, the wife of the deceased, Mrs. Joyce Atta-Quartey, who graced the occasion, expressed profound gratitude to the Department for the honour done her late husband and asked for God’s unending blessings to students and staff of the Department.

She announced the establishment of an endowment fund to reward best graduating students in the Department during congregation ceremonies in the University.

Mrs. Atta Quartey added that the Fund was also to support research activities at the Department.

Consequently, Mrs. Atta- Quartey doled out GH ¢ 5000 as a seed capital to support the Fund.

For his part, the Head of the Department of Music and Dance, Dr. Florian Carl, paid glowing tribute to the late Dr. Joe Atta-Quartey.

DRIC ORGANISES WORKSHOP ON PUBLICATION OUTLETS, RESEARCHER VISIBILITY AND EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENT

16 Dec, 2016 By louis Mensah

The Directorate of Research Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) has organised a day’s workshop on Publication Outlets, Researcher Visibility and External Engagement to explain the need for lecturers to publish beyond Ghana.

The workshop was also aimed at building the capacity of lecturers to improve their writing skills.

Opening the workshop, the Director of DRIC, Prof. Samuel Annim, urged lecturers to sign onto the Google Scholar platform so as to make themselves visible to the world through their publications.

He noted, ”It is through Google Scholar that will make your works known across the nooks and crannies of the world”.

Prof. Annim announced that the Directorate would organise workshops on Grantmanship and Mentorship during the second semester of this academic year.

He said the Directorate would engage with lecturers on the need for them to do away with unsolicited research and embrace solicited research.

“Our core business of doing unsolicited research for promotion is coming to an end,” he said, adding that “this is the time that we need to think about solicited research. This is the time to think about how to respond to calls for proposals, especially from outlets that are internationally recognised…”

On the workshop on Mentorship, Prof. Annim indicated that there was the need to redefine mentorship in the University away from the practice where at the point of interview “they give you somebody that you don’t know whether you have chemistry with the person or you don’t know whether you have the same research interest with the person and all that you see from the person is at the end or periodically you go and a form is signed.”

To this end,he noted that, henceforth, every year, DRIC would engage with relatively younger colleague lecturers to send vague drafts to the Directorate for seasoned researchers, either in the University or outside, for assessment.

“Whatever you are thinking about just bring it. Let’s see that you have an idea on paper and giving out that the idea will bear you up with a seasoned researcher in the University and if we cannot find one in the University, we will go beyond the University,” Prof. Annim said.

He stressed that “This workshop is also to help younger colleagues to move on the ladder as far as publications are concerned.”

The DRIC Director gave credit to the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D.D Kuupole, for initiating the Research Support Grant(RSG) in deepening research in the University.

Prof. Annim also commended the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, for increasing the Grant from GH 100,000 to GH 500,000.

He said the Vice-Chancellor had advised the Directorate to diversify the portfolio of the Research Support Grant.

Consequently, Prof. Annim mentioned that the Research Support Grant had three levels, namely Individual Group RSG, Inter-departmental RSG and Policy and Practice-Oriented RSG.

He announced that, in April 2017, the Directorate would hold Researcher Awards ceremony to reward deserving lecturers and therefore encouraged lecturers to apply for the Grant.

The Deputy Director of DRIC, Dr. Frederick Ato Armah, took participants through Authorship, Conflict, Data salami slicing; Challenges with the peer review process and attributes of a successful researcher. Other areas were Getting intimate with publish or perish calculator; Identifying credible outlets for research outputs; Useful toolkits and reporting guidelines for academics and researchers.

UCC FISHERIES AND COASTAL RESEARCH LABORATORY RECEIVES FISH AGE AND GROWTH EQUIPMENT FROM THE USAID GHANA SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES MANAGEMENT PROJECT (SFMP)

06 Dec, 2016 By louis Mensah

The growing relationship between the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Rhode Island through their respective funded projects under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is contributing immensely to the sustainable use of fisheries resources in Ghana.

The Two projects that have brought the two institutions together in this regard are the USAID-GHANA Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (SFMP) and the USAID/UCC Fisheries and Coastal Management Capacity Building Support Project at the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS), UCC.

As part of the capacity building process towards sustainable management of fisheries and coastal resources in Ghana is the recently refurbished and equipped Fisheries and Coastal Research Laboratory (FCRL) at DFAS. The Laboratory is expected to serve a national purpose by improving and elevating research in the fisheries sector to better inform policy direction in the sector.

In lieu of the objective set for the Laboratory, an array of modern laboratory equipment have been procured by DFAS through the USAID-funded project. To complement research activities of the Laboratory, the SFMP on Thursday 27th October 2016, donated a set of special equipment for the determination and analysis of fish age and growth. This will allows fisheries managers to understand the dynamics of fish stocks and how fish populations react to environmental stresses like commercial/sport fishing, natural mortality.

The equipment were presented to the Laboratory and DFAS on behalf of the SFMP by Dr. Najih Lazar (Senior Fisheries Advisor, SFMP) in a short ceremony largely attended by DFAS academic staff, technicians and students, and some representatives of the SFMP. Dr. Denis Aheto, Director for the Centre for Coastal Management and Project Manager for the USAID/UCC Fisheries Project, received the equipment on behalf of the Project and commended Dr. Lazar’s efforts of working closely and providing technical advice on fisheries issues to the USAID/UCC Project. He further expressed excitement at the arrival of the equipment and thanked the SFMP Project on behalf of the Head of Department, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (Dr. Noble Asare) and the Dean,  School of Biological Sciences (Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong) who could not be present at the ceremony due to other official assignments. In his response, Dr. Lazar hinted that the initiative of an age and growth laboratory could be of a great service to the Fisheries Scientific Survey Division (FSSD) of the Fisheries Commission. Formal signatories were then exchanged to be the ceremony to a closure. Other DFAS academic members present during the ceremony are Prof Kobina Yankson, Prof. John Blay, Prof. Joseph Aggrey-Fynn, and Mr. Joseph Debrah.
