The University of Cape Coast, UCC, took the center stage at this year’s Youth Conference organized by the United Nations in Johannesburg, South Africa, after a member of staff emerged first in the Intercontinental Youth Connect Model United Nations (IYCMUN).

The conference was on the theme: “Youth: Leaders for Today and Tomorrow.”

The staff member, from the Sports Section of the University, Mr. Jude Edem Kweku Govinah, won the first position among fifty-two (52) participants from fifty-two (52) countries.

Mr. Govinah received a certificate of award and UCC was also presented with a certificate of appreciation for supporting the delegate to join the YCMUN.

Receiving the awardee at his office, Registrar of the University, Mr. Jeff Teye Emmanuel Onyame, congratulated him on his outstanding performance at the conference and for putting up a spirited performance which had enhanced the enviable image of the University worldwide.

The Registrar applauded him for defying all odds and surmounting incredible obstacles to bring such joy to management, staff and students by that singular feat. He said the University was rightly proud of Mr. Govinah and asked him not to rest on his oars.

Mr. Onyame noted that the exploit by Mr. Govinah would spur other members of staff on to win greater laurels for UCC not only in Ghana but on the Continent as well.

For his part, Mr. Govinah was grateful to management of UCC for the support and also footing the bill of his trip.

He recounted that he participated in three oral presentations: unprepared speech, prepared speech and a debate. The debate, he noted, was on the topic: ‘Having the Africa We Want and the Role of Each Country in Having the Africa We Want’.

He said his presentation focused on coming together and having select countries to help Africa develop.

Research Agenda

The 2023-2027 Research Agenda, which is under the theme "Transdisciplinary Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development in a Changing World", provides the roadmap for research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries and integrates the disciplines of education, humanities, natural, social, and health sciences. As a constellation of a diverse individual and team-based research portfolio from departments, faculties/schools and colleges of our University, this Agenda is inherently owned by our entire research community due to its bottom-up development procedures. The Agenda also aims to guide research, using novel ideas and processes to produce new and original outputs for societal benefit. Further, the 2023-2027 Research Agenda is situated within national (e.g. Ghana Centennial Development Plan, NDPC Agenda 2057), continental (e.g. Agenda 2063, the Africa we want) and global development agendas (e.g. the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)).

This renewed research agenda seeks to build on our unique strengths and opportunities, as well as confront our unique weaknesses and threats. It is a strategic framework for guiding improvements in the development, conduct and governance of our research and innovation drive. It will also ensure that the University of Cape Coast continues to be positioned among the best research-intensive universities nationally, egionally and globally.

Speaking at the Inauguration, the Registrar of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Mr. Ebenezer Aggrey, congratulated the new executives and advised them to work together as a team to position the association well on campus.

He underscored the need for the new leadership of CHINSA to embark on initiatives that would bring eventful memories to its members.

"...a lot more will be expected from you. Expand and grow the association to have eventful memories. We form associations for the good of memories," he pointed out.

Mr. Aggrey was of the hope that the association would embrace all manner of students irrespective of their ethnic background. That, he noted, would bring out the unique identity of the association.

The Registrar challenged the leadership of CHINSA to be transparent and accountable to members, saying "leaders exist because of the members."

Mr. Aggrey assured the newly-elected officers of the full support of the College. He told members of CHINSA to take their studies seriously and take advantage of the services of faculty and staff to facilitate their studies.

For his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng, advised the leadership of CHINSA to leave beyond reproach in the discharge of their duties. He stressed that integrity should be the hallmark of the executives while entreating CHINSA members to shun destructive criticisms and indulge in constructive criticisms of their leaders.

This presentation explores the potential of whole-genome sequencing to unravel transmission patterns and the spread of pathogens, AMR, and virulence traits to

enhance our understanding of the evolution and spread of bacterial pathogens using E. coli as a test case.

UCC final year students receive national service orientation

06 May, 2022 By DIS

The Office of the Dean of Students in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) has organized a two-day orientation programme for final year students ahead of the 2022/23 National Service Year.

The orientation was aimed at equipping prospective national service personnel with the requisite information regarding what was required of them within their one-year mandate with their user agencies. It also gave the soon-to-be national service persons in-depth insight into the functions and operations of the NSS, along with other career-enhancing skills.

Addressing participants, the Central Regional Administrator of the NSS, Mr. Daniel Dawuso, advised the students to demonstrate a high sense of discipline in their quest to help their user agencies to effectively serve the public. He cautioned them against lukewarm attitudes to work in order to build a strong corporate image for their prospective user agencies. He also urged participants to accept placements as part of their contributions towards the socio-economic development of the country.

The NSS Regional Administrator took participants through the process of logging onto the Scheme’s website to check their placements. He further explained the procedures participants would go through to their various user agencies to endorse their appointment letters before they book appointments online for registration and validation at designated centres in their preferred regions.

Mr. Dawuso said national service was compulsory for all final year students who had graduated from tertiary institutions in the country, adding that it marked the beginning of service to the nation and initiated first-timers to public and civil service life.

He cautioned participants against dealing with unscrupulous persons who extort money from them on a promise to post them to their preferred user agencies. Mr. Dawuso entreated the final year students to join the National Service Personnel Association and take advantage of its programmes and activities to build their capacities.

The Assistant Registrar at the Office of the Dean of Students, Mrs. Afua Anima Ntow, in a brief speech, advised the participants to take the orientation programme seriously so as to make impact in their prospective user agencies.

The orientation topics included “Modules of NSS, deferment of NSS, Relevance of NSS, offences for personnel, leaves for personnel, exemption of NSS, amongst others.

Other resource persons at the orientation included Mr. Ernest Adams, the NSS Central Regional Manager of the Management and Information System, as well as some staff of the Scheme.

Dr. Dave Baker - Brief Profile

The first presentation, titled 'The long and the short of it...', will be delivered by Dave Baker (Quadram Institute, UK). This will be followed by a talk on 'Genomic diversity of Escherichia coli in the vertebrate gut: A West-African perspective' by Ebenezer Foster-Nyarko (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK).

Dr. Dave BakerDavid is the head of the Sequencing suite at the Quadram Institute Bioscience, Norwich, UK, coordinating the sequencing of foodborne pathogens as part of BBSRC-funded research projects within the various Institutional Strategic Programmes. Before joining the Quadram Institute 4 years ago, he spent ten months implementing Next Generation Sequencing at Food Forensics (a commercial company) and, prior to that, was a team leader in the Genomics Pipelines Group at Earlham Institute (formally TGAC). His primary role involved running and maintaining Earlham Institute's NGS and Whole Genome Mapping platforms, from sample delivery to machine output.
