2020 Best Farmer

National Best Farmer Interacts with Students of School of Agriculture

28 Feb, 2021 By louis Mensah

The 2020 National Best Farmer, Mr. Solomon Kwasi Amoah, has encouraged students of the School of Agriculture to take advantage of the numerous business opportunities in the agriculture sector.

Mr. Amoah was interacting with students of the School at a programme dubbed "Time with the National Best Farmer" at the Main Auditorium.

Experience

The 2020 National Best Farmer shared his personal life experiences, explaining the importance of agriculture especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. He informed students of the market opportunities in agriculture such as livestock marketing and processing. He noted that agriculture was lucrative for business and urged students to put in efforts to venture into the sector.
“Be proud to be an Agric student. There is no profit if you don’t practice what you learnt after school. It is your time, it is your chance, make your country proud.” he said.

Leadership in Agriculture

Speaking on the behalf of the Provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, the Dean of the School of Agriculture, Prof. Henry De-Graft Acquah, said the aim of the School was to provide leadership in agricultural education and train students, farmers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders in agricultural enterprise.

He noted that there were many job opportunities in the agricultural sector that students could take advantage of to set up their future businesses. He explained that the issue of unemployed graduates in the country could be curbed if graduates could take up farming as a business so they could employ themselves and others.

After the presentation, a question-and-answer session was held allowing students to bring forward their questions and opinions.

Swearing in of SRC executives

UCC Swears in Newly Elected Student Leaders

28 Feb, 2021 By louis Mensah

New executives of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), and the Local National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) have been sworn into office for the 2020/21 academic year.

Good Ambassadors of UCC

Speaking at the programme, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, congratulated the incoming executives and encouraged them to be good ambassadors of the University. Prof. Boampong assured them that the doors of the Management would always be opened to hear their concerns and suggestions. He urged them to work with the university to help maintain the COVID-19 protocols.

Truth Be Your Guide

The Dean of Students, Prof. Eugene K.M. Darteh, explained that the process of selecting executives for the academic year had been quite challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He commended the vetting and electoral committees for their hard work during the entire process. He encouraged the elected student leaders to let the truth be their guide during their tenure of office.

Implement Ideas

The Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Prof. Sarah Darkwah, encouraged the student leaders to put into practice the content of their speeches. She advised them to work in harmony with the university Management and let truth and honesty guide them. She also urged the student leaders to work hard to achieve their aims, so that other executives yet to come could also emulate them.

Welfare

The new GRASAG President, Mr. Eric Adjei, in his inaugural address, pledged to take up the unfinished business of improving the welfare of postgraduate students and building a strong sense of leadership for the next members of the association. “I promise to work in harmony with other members of the Executive Council, the Senate, and the Judicial Board to ensure the welfare of graduate students in UCC is fought for”, he said.

Unity

On his part, the new SRC President, Mr. Christopher E. Dadson, in his inaugural speech promised to rally and unite all student voices and all student governance structures for the common good. “We wish to boldly assert that if the beacon of hope for the student front at any point in time seemed dwindled, then we assure you that hope is here, and we are here to rekindle it.”, he said. He urged the other SRC executives, saying “We are duty-bound to provide honest and inspiring leadership that will light the path and motivate the student populace to contribute their quota to the development of this institution.”

The Registrar, Mr. Jeff Teye Onyame administered the oath of office to the new executives.
Present at the ceremony were the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, and some senior members.

COVID-19 Challenges: UCC Chancellor calls for National Dialogue

28 Feb, 2021 By louis Mensah

The Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Sir Sam E. Jonah, has called for a national conversation on how to mobilise national talents and resources to address the challenges and scars created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said such a dialogue should include key stakeholders, such as organised labour, the political parties, traditional leaders, civil society, and youth groups, to come up with "pretty tough decisions" that will be required to bring the economy back to normalcy.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the retired business executive said the woes of COVID-19 were enormous and pervasive, such that a different model, other than the usual "partisan approach", was needed to find solutions to them.

Parliament

The former President of AngloGold Ashanti said the emergence of a hung Parliament in the 2020 elections, with the Speaker coming from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), showed that the people wanted the two political parties to work together in these difficult times.

He said history was replete with precedent, with countries facing severe challenges doing away with partisanship and working together. Sir Sam, therefore, appealed to both sides of the political divide to work together in "a unity government or whatever name you will choose to call it" to confront the challenges.

"Such a government is more likely to create the level of trust required to navigate through the difficulties," he added.

According to him, the global nature of the pandemic meant that Ghana and other needy nations might not receive finances and technical expertise to deal with the challenges. “Therefore, we have to look within and we have to be prepared to take tough decisions. If we are to take those tough decisions, I am saying that it must not be on partisan basis; it must be based on consensus or under a unity government,” he said.

He cited the rise in public debt on the back of increased spending by the government to contain the pandemic, the collapse of businesses, and increased joblessness as some of the scars of the COVID-19 that needed to be tackled frontally to create a sustainable future for the youth.

According to him, joblessness was “creating a sense of hopelessness and helplessness” for the youth and needed to be handled with utmost care and urgency, as it stood the risk of degenerating into a security threat.

“We need to create hope for them and I am saying that this is the time for the coming together of the very best of skilled, trained, and experienced people and technocrats from both sides of the political divide to devise solutions to the problems,” the chancellor said.

Executive powers

Sir Sam further stressed the need to make the governance structure better and more responsive to the needs of the people. He said the current system that vested overarching powers in the Executive and also required majority of ministers from Parliament, among other practices, was counter-productive.

The leadership consultant also expressed worry over growing public distrust in key state institutions, especially the judiciary and the security services. He said although there were people of integrity in the Judiciary, the findings of the 2019 Afrobarometer survey that about 85 per cent of respondents did not trust the justice system to deliver fairness were dangerous and must be addressed.

"An inefficient judicial system stifles local businesses and dispels foreign investment in an increasingly competitive world. We need to reform the system so that justice can be delivered with integrity, without undue disruption to lawful business activity," he added.

Academic Programmes for Police Training Institutions

The Vice-Chancellor was hopeful that the collaboration would lead to the introduction of more academic programmes for personnel of the service. “It is my hope that with the successful commencement of this programme, immediate steps will be taken to develop curricula in MBA/MSC/MPhil in Security and Peace Studies at the Staff and Command College as well as Diploma in Security Studies for the training of recruits at the various Police Training Institutions,” he noted.

Mr. Oppong-Boanuh said the partnership would enable graduates from the Academy to use the acquired certificate to pursue further studies in the future and also provide avenues to enter into other viable ventures.“The collaboration is part of the Police’s strategic plans to build the capacity of personnel and improve training in line with international standards and best practices and also meet the expectation of the citizenry in security issues,” he said.
