Presentation of the signed MoU

UCC Deepens Collaboration with GOIL

20 Nov, 2020 By louis Mensah

The University Enterprises Limited (UCCEL) and GOIL Ghana Limited have renewed their relationship with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The new MoU which is an update of an earlier one the University signed with GOIL will give UCCEL full control of the operations of the GOIL Fuel Station on the University’s land.

Mobilising IGF

In his remarks at the signing ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, said the University was determined to create additional sources of mobilising internally generated funds to support its numerous activities. He noted that the partnership between UCC and GOIL had been mutually satisfactory to both parties.

Touching on the new MoU, Prof. Boampong commended GOIL for giving UCCEL full control of the fuel station. “We are happy that we now have a higher stake in the operations of the fuel station,” he added.

Benefits of New MoU

A former Board Chairman of the UCCEL Board, Prof. Edward Marfo Yiadom, said with the expanded MoU, the University was now in a position to benefit substantially from the fuel station.  “In the past GOIL was responsible for the day-to-day management of the fuel station, but with the current arrangement UCC will take full control whilst GOIL’s presence will be minimal,” he explained.

In addition, Prof. Yiadom indicated that the University would take control of the vehicle servicing area within the fuel station to provide services like changing of oil and vulcanizing.

Present at the signing ceremony were the Registrar, Mr. Jeff Teye Onyame; Board Chair of UCCEL, Mr. Kwaku Ennin; Director of Finance, Mrs. Elizabeth Obese; Assistant Registrar at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Ms. Elizabeth Yankah and Secretary of UCCEL Board, Mrs. Nana-Anna Abaka-Cann.

The team from GOIL were the Legal Affairs Manager, Mr. Kwabena Nimako; Public Relations Manager, Mr. Robert Kyere, and Zonal Manager for Central and Western, Ms. Baaba Martin Daniels.

DESAG Holds 5th National Biennial Women’s Delegates Conference

20 Nov, 2020 By louis Mensah

The Distance Education Students Association of Ghana, University of Cape Coast (DESAG-UCC) has held its 5th Biennial Women’s Conference with a call on female students to add value to themselves.

The two-day conference which had the theme: “Empowering Women in Entrepreneurship during and after COVID-19” was attended by delegates from the 16 regions of Ghana.

Empowerment

Speaking at the function, the Queen Mother of Anomabu, Nana Mbroba Dabo I, whose speech was delivered by the Krontihemaa of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Nana Amba Eyiaba I, advised women to be prepared to make relevant investments and adopt entrepreneurial practices to empower themselves. Nana Dabo I noted that empowerment must start with the mindset through the development of a can-do attitude which according to her should influence their decisions.  “This is why female specific workshops are essential to the woman entrepreneur,” she added.  She underscored the need for women to acquire skills to effectively overcome challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, who chaired the conference noted that COVID-19 had disrupted almost every aspect of human endeavour, however, it was important for the female students to adjust themselves by acquiring new skills so as not to depend on what they earned through formal employment.  “It has really become important for us women not to only rely on the end of month paycheque but do other things to earn additional income to support ourselves and the family,” she urged.
Prof. Edu-Buandoh encouraged the delegates to take advantage of the hands-on skills training they would be taken through at the conference to build a livelihood when they return to their various regions. “This is the time for you to reflect on what you can do and also acquire additional skills to add value to yourself” she stated.

Skills Acquisition

The Pro Vice-Chancellor advised the delegates to look beyond the pandemic and focus on how they could work towards applying the skills and knowledge they had acquired to change and shape their future. “We are in difficult times and you cannot sit idle and expect your life to turn around within a twinkle of an eye, you need to do something meaningful to make your standard of living better,” she implored them. She was hopeful that the delegates would form teams to begin joint ventures after the training sessions.

Women Entrepreneurs

The Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, Mrs. Barbara Asher Ayisi, who was the Guest Speaker stated that women were becoming more entrepreneurial in their thinking and this had led to the creation of more businesses in recent times. She disclosed that research had shown that women make up about 40% of new entrepreneurs.

Mrs. Ayisi who is also the Member of Parliament of Cape Coast North Constituency indicated that women’s contribution to economic growth could not be underestimated, adding that “When we have a lot of entrepreneurs in this country, we can help the economy to develop”.

Business Ventures

She encouraged the delegates to start business ventures if even their capital was not enough stressing that “It is better to start something with the little you have than sit at home after your university education. Remember that it is important to have a skill aside from being a graduate or a professional worker because nobody can tell what tomorrow holds.”
The Provost of the College of Distance Learning Education (CoDE), Prof. Isaac Galyuon noted that some of the graduates and students who had attended these conferences in the past had gained a lot and established their own businesses. He urged DESAG and the Women’s Commission to sustain this creative and innovative skills training programme even when the COVID-19 pandemic was over.

Empowering Women

The National Women’s Commissioner DESAG-UCC, Miss Thelma Ofosua Tabi, explained that DESAG was committed to empowering women with the needed skills and knowledge to become productive members of society. She said the Women’s Commission had introduced new programmes to the conference such as counselling session, health screening, and training on the production of hand sanitizer and liquid soap.
Present at the conference were Coordinators and Senior Members of the College of Distance Education, National Executive Committee members and delegates of DESAG-UCC.

SIGNED
Major Kofi Baah-Bentum (Rtd.) Psc APR
DIRECTOR(DPA)

         Pro Vice-Chancellor
         Registrar

A Signing Ceremony took place at the UNESCO office in Paris on Thursday, 12th November 2020 to formally complete the process to establish the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA), located at the University of Cape Coast Ghana, as a UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence for West Africa.

Her Excellency Anna Bossman, Ghana's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France and Portugal and Permanent Representative of Ghana to UNESCO, signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of Ghana whilst Mrs. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, did same for UNESCO. The agreement spelt out the commitment of both parties and more specifically, addresses the mandate, responsibilities, and obligations of IEPA.

It would be recalled that the 40th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO on 15th November 2019 approved the elevation of IEPA to a UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence for West Africa. Ghana’s delegation to the General Conference was led by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh. The General Conference further authorized the Director-General of UNESCO to sign the corresponding agreement with the Government of Ghana for operations. This signing completes the process and sets the tone for a new phase for IEPA to deliver on its new mandate.

Instructively, the IEPA as a UNESCO Category II Centre will build capacity of the work force in the education sector in the West African sub-region in the areas of Educational Planning, Leadership and Administration as well as mobilize international and regional experts to provide technical assistance and policy advice to support sector-wide planning and policy development.

The operations of IEPA will be driven by four key strategic thrusts. First, to build and strengthen the capacity of educational planners, leaders, and administrators in the West African sub-region. Second, to support educational ministries within the sub-region to undertake sector-wide planning, policy development, and implementation. Third, to promote cutting-edge research, innovation and consultancy in education service delivery. Fourth, to create a platform for, and mobilize educational experts in the sub-region to interrogate educational issues and provide policy advice to Ministries of Education of Member States.

Instrumentally, the new IEPA UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence for West Africa’s operation will result in member states harnessing research and innovation to boost development and build related capacities, preparing policy briefs emanating from research in topical issues of educational equity and efficiency, and networking for collaborative work on the priority areas of UNESCO.

It is worthy to note that Ghana is committed to implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The elevation of IEPA to a UNESCO Category II status is part of the commitment of the West African governments to meet the above international agenda for education especially in meeting the SDG 4 which seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

UCC Launches Two Strategic Documents

18 Nov, 2020 By louis Mensah

Two documents, the Vice-Chancellor’s Vision Strategy and the Business and Enterprise Development Policy have been launched at a ceremony held at the New Examination Centre.

The two documents that would help the Vice-Chancellor prosecute his agenda for the next four years are aligned to the University’s Corporate Strategic Policy.

Launch

Launching the documents, a renowned University Administrator and President of Radford University College, Dr. Paul Effah, said the Monitoring and Evaluation Office to be set up should not be made to remain static, rather go through various stages of growth. “The office should start small and tap into the numerous expertise that abounds on campus to help achieve the vision”, he noted.

“It is important to get people who will constantly recreate and renew efforts to move the vision forward”, he continued.

Dr. Effah who was the guest speaker at the ceremony advised that the office should not think of profit right from the onset, rather think of getting the right people who would bring in the profit later, which he described as “upside down thinking”.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, speaking at the launch

Stakeholders

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, indicated that various stakeholders were consulted in coming up with the two documents.
Prof. Boampong announced the establishment of a Monitoring and Evaluation office under the Office of the Vice-Chancellor to ensure that all the strategies that would be implemented were aligned to the key thrusts in the Corporate Strategic Plan of the University.

Members of the University community and the general public

Business

He said there was the need for the University to do business, therefore the two documents would serve as a guide as well as a blueprint for any investment that dealings moving forward
He mentioned that, while doing business, the University would also be training students to be entrepreneurial-minded so as to work for or employ themselves upon completion of their studies.

“We have to do business, which means we need to invest and train students, so they do not go looking for jobs, but create theirs and employ others”, he concluded.

Chairman of Council, Mrs. Nancy O. C. Thompson delivering her address

Chairman of Council, Mrs. Nancy Thompson reiterated the call for all stakeholders to work together to achieve the vision, saying “We should not see the task ahead as my work, but our work. We should achieve this together so we must not see or call it just as printed document but a workable document”.

Present at the function were the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora F. Edu-Buandoh; Registrar, Mr. Jeff T. Onyame; Dr. Agyarko Poku- a member of UCC Council and Provosts Others were Deans, Directors, Heads of Department and some members of the University community.

UCCSMS Inducts 111 Medical Students at 11th White Coat Ceremony

14 Nov, 2020 By louis Mensah

The School of Medical Sciences (SMS) has inducted 111 medical students into the clinical phase of their training at the 11th White Coat Ceremony.

Out of the total number of medical students inducted at the ceremony, there were 70 regular and 41 Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) students.

The ceremony is held for level 300 medical students who had completed their pre-clinical training and had satisfied all academic requirements to begin the clinical stage of their medical training.

Humility and Dignity

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, whose speech was read by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora F. Edu-Buandoh, urged the students not only to wear the white coat with pride but with humility and dignity. He reminded them that the white coat should instill confidence, and trust in their patient. “Let it also be a reminder to you to embrace opportunities to learn so that both you and the patients can benefit from your clinical rotation,” he advised.

Prof. Boampong pointed out that the UCC School of Medical Sciences (UCCSMS) was unique stressing that “We train our students to be highly professional”.  He indicated that although the School strived to provide the best of environments for their training, there were still challenges with infrastructural development. “We, therefore, invite stakeholders, government agencies, corporate institutions, and individual benefactors to partner with us to continue to train the best doctors for healthcare provision in the country.  The School had set up an Endowment Fund and we are ready to receive donations and commitments from all in support of our activities,” he appealed.

On the significance of the ceremony, Prof. Boampong said the white coat symbolically reminded physicians of their professional duty to practice medicine with integrity and honour as described by Hippocrates. “As medical students, ready to attend to patients, you too are bound by the same professional commitments that bind all physicians,” he charged them.

The Vice-Chancellor described the ceremony as an iconic ritual that had become a symbolic hallmark of healthcare training institutions around the world. “It is meant to inspire the zeal in students about to begin their careers in the field of medicine, but more importantly to remind them of their responsibility to care for humanity” he explained.

Confidentiality

In his address, the Acting Registrar of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council (GMDC), Dr. Divine Banyubala, charged the medical students not to practice their vocation on social media. He stated that confidentiality must be their prime concern as they enter into the critical stage of their medical training.

“Disclosing patients’ information within any public space breaches the fundamental principles of the medical profession,” he warned. He further indicated that the MDC was concerned about disclosing medical privacy and confidentiality through any technological medium, especially social media. Therefore, he advised the medical students to desist from engaging in such acts. “Never discuss patient confidential information either in the public or on social media,” he cautioned.

Aspiration

The Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof. Martins Ekor, noted that UCCSMS right from its inception aspired to be the best in the sub-region and eventually to rub shoulders with the best in the world. He said the School since its humble beginnings had maintained an academic and clinical environment where all staff and students work together to provide the highest level of training and patient care. “The medical professionals have to be people-centered, community-oriented and research-conscious”

Prof. Ekor indicated that the School recently graduated its eighth batch of medical doctors. He said through the White Coat Ceremony, the students were being reminded they had the requisite training to meet patients and put their acquired knowledge into practice. “Instead of mannequins, we are now trusting them with patients and, therefore, as faculty put the white coats on them, and as they take the oath today, it is my hope that the words will not just come out of their mouths, but they will practice them as they are embarking on a journey that requires integrity, compassion, and above all sacrifice to society”.

In his remarks, the Dean of the School of Medical Sciences, Prof. Sebastian Eliason, noted that the white coat was historic because two tracks of cycle one students were being initiated into cycle two which was the clinical component of their training. Prof. Eliason paid glowing tribute to the founding Dean of the School, Prof. Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi for instituting the White Coat Ceremony.

Present at the function were the Omanhen of Omanhen of the Owirenkyi Traditional Area, Nana Prah Agyensaim VI; Chief Executive Officer of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Dr. Eric Kofi Ngyedu, Founding Dean, SMS, Prof. Harold H.S. Amonoo-Kuofi. Also present were former Deans and lecturers of SMS.
