Cape Coast, October 26, 2020: Following the directive by the President of the Republic of Ghana for all tertiary institutions to reopen in January 2021, in a broadcast on Sunday, 18th October, 2020, the Management of the University of Cape Coast, hereby informs students, staff, the University Community and all stakeholders that:

1. The First Semester of the 2020/2021 Academic Year will start from 9th January, 2021 instead of the originally scheduled reopening date of 14th November, 2020.

2. This arrangement applies to both fresh and continuing students.

3. The detailed Academic Calendar for the 2020/2021 Academic Year will be announced in due course.

Dr. Obed Amoah-Smith

Dr. Obed Amoah-Smith Awarded Fellow of American Academy of Optometry

An Optometrist with the University of Cape Coast Hospital, Dr. Obed Amoah-Smith, has been honoured as a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) at a virtual award and recognition ceremony held on 17th October 2020.
    
Dr. Amoah-Smith is the fifth Ghanaian to be awarded the Fellowship and the third from the University of Cape Coast.

Selection

Dr. Amoah-Smith qualified for the fellowship, after going through a rigorous evaluation process which is considered as the highest standards of professional competence.

Dr. Smith Amoah is also a part-time lecturer at the Department of Optometry and Vision Science of the College of Health and Allied Sciences. He holds a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from UCC and graduated as the Best Optometry student in 2013.

Experience

He also holds a Specialist Certificate in Glaucoma and Retinal Disease from The University of Melbourne, Australia. Prior to joining the University of Cape Coast Hospital in 2016, Dr Amoah-Smith worked as an Intern Optometrist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Eye Centre from 2013-2014 and as the Resident Optometrist at Ghartey Eye Centre from 2014-2016.

Dr. Amoah-Smith was instrumental in the setting up of the University Eye Clinic. He has served as the Unit Head of the Eye Clinic since its commencement in July, 2018.

American Academy of Optometry

Founded in 1922, the American Academy of Optometry is committed to promoting the art and science of vision care through lifelong learning.

Members of the Academy consist of Fellows (including Emeritus, Honorary and Life Fellows), student members, and candidates for Fellowship. Although members may have similar benefits, only Fellows may use the “FAAO” designation.
