The University of Cape Coast Basic School –North Campus, formerly known as Basic School Annex has held its 2nd Speech and Prize Giving Day on the theme ‘The Role of Self-Discipline in Achieving Academic Excellence.’

In his address, the Vice Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Prof. Kankam Boadu, called on the pupils to remain focused, determined, diligent, time conscious, and hardworking. He said that, for a student to become academically excellent, he/ she must be God fearing, respectful, self-disciplined, dutiful and punctual in his/ her academic endeavours. 

The guest speaker advised parents and teachers to take keen interest in moulding children morally and academically in order to achieve academic excellence.

The Chairman for the function, Mr. Moses Maclean Abnory, urged parents and teachers to team up and ensure the development of the pupils. He commended the parents for taking keen interest in the activities of the school.  

The Chairperson of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) , Madam Mary Enos, said during Speech and Prize Giving Day, the School Governing Council, PTA, teaching and non-teaching staff and pupils take stock of activities of the previous year(s) and take realistic decisions to improve them in the ensuing year. She said the ceremony was also to reward deserving pupils and encourage others to work assiduously. She expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the entire University Administration, teaching and non-teaching staff of the school for their hard work towards the development of the UCC Basic School –North Campus.

The Head Teacher, Mr. Victor Addison, in his report stated that the School has been connected to the national grid. He said some pupils of the School embarked on an exchange programme to Togo and educational tour to Kumasi. He indicated that the School acquired new  furniture due to the increasing size of the pupils. He added that athletes from the School were part of the Basic School team that won the 2018 UBaSSA Games hosted by UCC.

 Mr. Addison mentioned poor road link; soggy nature of the school compound; unavailability of proper playing field and lack of vehicle to convey emergency cases to hospital as some of the challenges the facing the School.  

Prizes were presented to deserving pupils from pre-school, primary and junior high school. Some National Service Personnel received prizes for their hard work.

The Institute of Education has presented a Toyota Hilux vehicle to the Directorate of Physical Development and Estate Management (DPDEM) at a short ceremony on campus.

The vehicle is to facilitate the movement of staff of DPDEM to monitor the Institute of Education Guest House project on campus as well as other projects within and outside campus.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of the Institute of Education, Prof. Frederick Ocansey, explained that provision was made for a vehicle in the total contract sum for the Guest House Project. He indicated that the project was initially to be constructed in Accra but later moved to campus adding that “Once there’s provision for a vehicle, we had no option than to buy it for DPDEM to carry on its duties to ensure that the contractors do the right thing on site”.                                    

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, said it was a step in the right direction for the Institute of Education to have purchase the vehicle instead of the contractor. “In the past, the contractor of such projects will buy the vehicle from the University’s own money then later donate it to us as if the contractor was doing us good,” he indicated. He commended the Director of DPDEM for ensuring that this practice has been curtailed.

Prof. Ampiah entreated DPDEM to use the vehicles for its intended purpose saying “though the Institute of Education project is almost complete but this vehicle can be used to monitor the progress of work of other projects of the University that are ongoing”. The Vice-Chancellor later presented the keys to the Toyota Hilux to the Director of DPDEM on behalf of the Institute of Education.

The Director of DPDEM, Mr. Philip Ntim, thanked the Institute of Education and the Vice-Chancellor for the vehicle and gave the assurance that it would be used for its intended purpose. He said the Directorate was in dire need of vehicle especially for staff of the Maintenance Section who were always on the ground working. “There are times that because of unavailability of vehicle, work comes to a halt just because a staff has to pick a tool or a material from the office,” he said.

The Confucius Institute has celebrated its second anniversary with both Chinese and Ghanaian cultural performances at the Main Auditorium.

Speaking at the function, the Central Regional Minister, Mr. Kwamina Duncan, commended the University for hosting the Institute to promote the Chinese Language and culture and also extending it to other educational institutions in the region. He assured that the Regional Coordinating Council would ensure a peaceful environment to make the region secure for the Confucius Institute to develop and achieve its objectives.

Mr. Duncan said the region had benefitted immensely in terms of infrastructure projects from Ghana’s bilateral relations with China. He hoped that through the Confucius Institute, cultural exchange programmes between Ghana and China would increase for mutually beneficially relationship between the two nations.

Drawing inspiration from the Chinese story, the Regional Minister called on Ghanaians to emulate the exemplary attitude of discipline and a culture of determination to achieve success. “We need to imbibe the culture of discipline and the culture of determination to help in the development of our communities and the nation as whole,” he admonished. He said China presented a great lesson to Ghanaians to consider their ways of doing things.

Mr. Duncan was worried that some people have been instigating anti-China agenda on social media and called on Ghanaians to learn from the success story rather than denigrating the Chinese people.

The Provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Prof. L. K. Sam-Amoah, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, said UCC’s relationship with the Confucius Institute was bearing fruits. He indicated that the University would continue to cooperate with the Institute to achieve more successes in the years ahead.

The Chinese Director of UCC Confucius Institute, Prof. Hu Langcai, who read a speech on behalf of the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency, Shi Ting Wang, said UCC was the second University to host the Institute in the country. He reported that UCC Confucius Institute has made significant strides since its establishment two years ago.

Mr. Wang said in 2017, 20 students from UCC won the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship in addition to many students from Ghana who won various scholarships by the Chinese government to study in China. According to him several UCC students took part in the Chinese Bridge Proficiency Chinese Proficiency Communication in Ghana.

The Chinese Ambassador was hopeful that Ghanaians would make persistence effort to master the Ancient Chinese Language which has a history of 5, 000 years. He implored Ghanaians to “Study the Chinese Language, make Chinese friends, contribute towards the development of the Ghana-China relationship and believe in the bright future of UCC Confucius Institute”.

According to Mr. Wang, China-Africa relations would continue to flourish and, therefore, encouraged Ghanaian students to seize the historical opportunities and take advantage of Confucius Institutes.
