Principals of Colleges of Education Attend Workshop

The Institute of Education (IOE) has organised a workshop for Principals, Vice-Principals and Assessment Officers of the Colleges of Education.

The two-day workshop, dubbed “Training of Trainers (ToT)”, was on the theme “Role of Principals, Vice- Principals and Assessment Officers in the assessment of students in the Colleges of Education”.

Addressing the participants, the Director of the Institute of Education, Prof. Frederick Ocansey, said the workshop was planned to focus on two important aspects of the student assessment, namely, how to conduct credible assessment in the colleges of education and how to apply best practices in generating test items for student assessment.

Prof. Ocansey said plans were far advanced to roll out workshops for tutors in the various subjects areas, mentioning English, Mathematics, Social studies, amongst others.

According to Prof. Ocansey, the Research and Publications Unit of the Institute was preparing to roll out series of workshops on the training of the academic staff of the colleges of education in writing research proposals, conducting credible research and publishing of research findings.

The Director said the Institute intended to modify the procedure used in generating test items for its question or item bank.

Explaining further, Prof. Ocansey said the current practice whereby the Institute invites item writers – mainly tutors from the colleges of education – and keep them at one center on residential arrangement for two weeks for them to write test items under the supervision and leadership of the Chief Examiners of the Institute of Education has faced some problems.

“This practice has faced some challenges including the disquiet expressed by principals on taking away and keeping tutors out of the classroom for two weeks.

“The practice also puts too much pressure on the item writers who are required to do so much within a short period of time,” he said.

He noted that the workshop would help Officers who were deeply involved in assessment in the colleges of education to use assessment effectively, which would in turn enhance both the academic standards and the quality of students learning experience.

The Provost of the College of Education Studies, Prof. Eric Magnus Wilmot, who opened the workshop, said the workshop would equip the participants with requisite knowledge and capacity on how to effectively manage assessment processes in their colleges.

Prof. Wilmot appealed to the participants to share information and knowledge gained in the workshop with their colleagues in their respective colleges.

In accordance with the regulations governing release of examination results in the University and as directed by the Vice-Dean of Faculty of Arts, we would like to suggest the following time lines for Departmental Examinations Board meetings and also inform you about the following schedules  for the Faculty Examinations Board meeting:
 
Departments are kindly requested to arrange to hold their Examinations Board meetings between Monday 23rd- Thursday 26th January, 2017 and submit all approved results to the Dean’s Office latest by Monday 30th January, 2017.
 
The Faculty Examinations Board meeting is as follows:
Tuesday 31st January, 2017 (first session)
Thursday 2nd February, 2017 (second session) 
As it has been the practice, Departments are also requested to take notice of the following:
 
Departments should submit two (2) comb-bound copies of detailed results only to the Dean’s Office to be given to the Vice-Dean and the Faculty Examinations Officer at the meeting.
Departments that will delay the submission of their results will be surcharged with the cost for convening another meeting and approving those results respectively.
Departmental Examinations Officers are kindly requested to save all results in PDF format and prepare for overhead projection of the results during the Faculty Examinations Board meeting. 
We would like to urge all Heads of Department and Examinations Officers to take the necessary steps to enable us meet the schedules stated above.
 
On behalf of the Dean, we welcome all colleagues back to campus and wish all a prosperous New Year and incident free semester.

Delegation From University at Buffalo Calls on Vice-Chancellor

A delegation from the University of Buffalo, New York, USA, School of Management, has called on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah.

The delegation, led by the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Research and Experiential Learning, Dr. Mara Huber, said the team was in UCC to acquaint itself with programmes run by the University and also seek collaboration

She noted that her University runs programmes such as Engineering, Education, Applied Sciences and leadership training.

Dr. Huber pointed out that the University wants its students to engage in hands-on learning activities.

For his part, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah briefed the delegation about the programmes run at the various colleges of the University.

He told the US delegation that the university runs five colleges, namely Colleges of Education, Distance Education, Agricultural and Natural Sciences, and Humanities and Legal Studies.

Prof. Ampiah noted that the University would be glad to have a fruitful relationship with the University of Buffalo's School of Management.

UCC Wins 7th Mini GUSA Games

The University of Cape Coast has hosted and won the just ended 7th Mini Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) games with a total of 28 gold, 19 silver and 5 bronze medals.

The University of Ghana placed second with 10 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze, they were followed by the University of Education Winneba in 3rd position collecting 5 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) 4th with 2 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze medals, the 5th position went to the University for Development Studies (UDS) with 3 bronze medals, University of Professional Studies, Accra, University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) bagging one bronze medal each respectively.

It was an excitement-filled sports festival for both athletes and officials from eight public universities who congregated at the games village at the Superannuation Hostel at the University of Cape Coast.

The competing universities were, the host institution; University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and the University for Development Studies (UDS).

The others were the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), University for Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

The kind of friendship  displayed by both sportsmen and women and officials gave the true meaning of what sports is all about. This was made possible by the kind of organization put up by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) under the able chairmanship of the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the host university, UCC, Prof. George Oduro with the utmost support of all members and executives of GUSA led by Prof. Joseph K. Ogah.

Performances put up by athletes from the participating institutions were very high given the fact a lot of new records were set.  Each of the disciplines was keenly contested with the best athletes and teams emerging victors.

It was therefore not surprising that when the President of GUSA, Prof. J. K. Ogah, while addressing the gathering, commended the athletes for their high performances and display of both individual skills and talents during the event.

Prof. Ogah therefore urged them to train hard to represent Ghana at the World Universities games this year at Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) from August 19 to 30.

The GUSA president commended the Local Organising Committee for their hard work, which culminated in a successful event.

Closing the 7th Mini GUSA games, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, lauded the athletes for their show of good sportsmanship during the games and applauded all participating universities for their commitment and display of dedication and hard work.

“You have done very well, I am happy to note that each university won at least a medal," he said.

KNUST won gold in the final football match by beating UCC 5-4 penalties after a pulsating goalless drawn game.

The mini GUSA games are organized biennially to select athletes to represent Ghana during world universities games.

Prof. George Oduro Receives Brighter Investment CEO

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Brighter Investment, Mr. Thijs Mathot, has called on the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K. T Oduro, at his office.

The purpose of the visit was to introduce his firm to the University of Cape Coast and seek further collaboration for sustainable relationship with the University students.

Mr. Mathot stressed that Brighter Investment, supported by the University of British Columbia- Canada, was a social organisation which provides financial support to needy students.

The CEO mentioned that his organisation was presently supporting financially-handicapped students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, University of Ghana, UG, University for Development Studies, UDS, University of Mines and Technology,UMaT, Kumasi Technical University,KsTU (formerly called Kumasi Polytechnic), and would like to extend that same financial assistance to students in the University of Cape Coast.

According to Mr. Mathot, Brighter Investment would pay tuition and accommodation fees for students, adding that students would also be given monthly stipend for their books and other study related expenses.

However, he explained that after graduation, beneficiary students would repay a percentage of their income for a pre-agreed duration.

Mr. Mathot indicated that the organisation ensures flexible repayment process for students in order not to burden students with debts after school.

Prof. Oduro, for his part, welcomed the idea and consequently assured Mr. Mathot of the University’s readiness for a sustained relationship.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor said the initiative would alleviate the plights of students who were financially challenged on campus.

He urged the organisation to formalize the proposal to enable the University take appropriate action on it.

Dr. Collins Kwarteng Calls on Pro-Vice-Chancellor

The President of City of Hope Cardiovascular Care and Therapeutics, USA, Dr. Collins Kwarteng, has called on the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K.T Oduro, at his office.

The purpose of the visit, according to Dr. Kwarteng, was to seek collaboration with the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to set up a Health Sciences University, with special focus on training cardiovascular health professionals.

He said the visit was also to seek further collaboration to establish a Cardiothoracic Centre, which will be affiliated to the University.

Dr.  Kwarteng, who is a Ghanaian-American trained cardiologist, said Ghana lacked specially trained cardiovascular nurses and medics, hence his dream to set up the facilities to deal with cardiovascular related diseases.

On his part, Prof. George Oduro, after welcoming the delegation, said due to the financial constraints that confront tertiary institutions in Ghana, there was the need for the University to explore all avenues to seek collaborations with other partners.

Prof. Oduro expressed the University’s readiness to support Dr. Kwarteng to set up the facilities.

He called on Dr. Kwarteng to furnish the authorities at the School of Medical Sciences, the Directorate of the University Health Services and the Affiliation Office with his plans in order to get professional assistance to his dream of putting up the aforesaid facilities.

Mrs.  Joyceline Nkansah, the President of the Ghana Association of Southern California, USA; Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng, Head, Department of History, UCC, and Mrs. Georgina Owusu, the Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor, were present during the meeting.

Two DUHS Staff Members Receive Medical Excellence Awards

Two members of staff of the Directorate of University Health Services ( DUHS)  have been awarded at the 2nd National Medical Excellence Awards for their outstanding achievements in the field of healthcare delivery.

The award ceremony, held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Accra, was aimed at boosting the confidence and morale of professionals in the health sector.

The Medical Excellence Awards (MEA) for Healthcare Delivery Personnel was established in 2011 with the objective of honouring health care delivery works both in public and private sector.

The two awardees - Mrs. Gloria Baaba Aubyn, Principal Laboratory Technician of DUHS, and Dr.  Patrick Akwasi Baah, a Dental Surgeon and the Deputy Director of DUHS - were presented with citations.

The citation presented to Mrs. Aubyn reads "Health care provision is based on your findings. You play a pivotal role in the provision of the health care through your lenses. Your critical attention to detail and caution in administering your duties aids in the delivery of quality health care.”

That of Dr. Baah reads "As a doctor of oral health and dental care, your competences and skills contribute to the overall health of your patients. Your devotion and selfless love contribution to your profession gives a smile to patients.”

In his congratulatory remarks, the Director of DUHS, Dr. Evans Ekanem, commended the awardees for their exemplary achievements in their various endeavours and also sacrificing to serve humanity.

“Thank you for the honour done the University and also for impacting on humanity. You should be encouraged by the recognition given you to provide better health services  to your clients”, he noted,while hosting the awardees at his office.

Dr. Ekanem urged them not to rest on their oars, but to work assiduously to project the image of DUHS, in particular, and the University of Cape Coast, in general.

He called on the younger health professionals to emulate the shining example of the awardees in order to reach similar heights.

In all, 24 health sector personnel were awarded in eight categories nationwide.

Present during the ceremony were Mr. Atta Yeboah-Sarpong, the Health Services Administrator at the DUHS; Mr.Victorious  Yamoah Hagan, the Accountant at the DUHS, and Mr. Thomas Tamag, the Nurse Manager at the DUHS.
