KSU to Assist UCC to Build Public Health Training Centre

11 Oct, 2016 By louis Mensah

A delegation from Kennesaw State University (KSU), USA, has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to pursue a grant for the construction of a Public Health Training Centre.

According to the KSU delegation the proposed Public Health Training Centre would not only educate students on clinical health related matters but would equally put premium on violent prevention and conflict management as important facets of public health.

This came to light when Prof. Sam Abaidoo, led a delegation including, Dr. Barbara Blake, Dr. Chi Zhang, Dr. Evelina Sterling from the Kennesaw State University to pay a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, at his office.

Prof. Abaidoo noted that KSU, in collaboration with a UCC team led by Prof. H. S. Amonoo-Kuofi, was working on a grant application to be submitted to American Schools and Hospitals Association (ASHA) to build the facility. He said the Training School would give the requisite skills and capabilities to students to deal vigorously with any eventualities in the discharge of their duties as public health professionals.

As part of their pre-grant meeting the delegation would learn firsthand the Information Technology (IT) capabilities of the University, so that they would know what IT component may have to be included in the grant to improve the proposed training. He placed the current collaboration in the context of long-standing relationship between KSU and UCC dating back to 1999 under Prof Agyapong, a former Vice-Chancellor of UCC.

Receiving the high-level delegation, Prof Joseph Ghartey Ampiah welcomed Prof. Abaidoo and his accompanying delegation to the University. He expressed joy at KSU for choosing UCC as the institution to collaborate with on the proposed Public Health School. He assured the delegation of his unflinching support for the project.

Prof. Ampiah was hopeful that the KSU-UCC collaborators would get the grant from the USAID/ASHA to build the facility, which will be situated within the Amonoo-Kuofi Medical Village.  The Vice-Chancellor commended KSU for placing premium on IT as part of this planned endeavor, which he said forms part of his topmost priorities in seeking to digitize the University.

The meeting was attended by the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof George K. T. Oduro; the Registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan; the Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof. Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi. Others included the Dr. William Boateng and Dr. Kingsley Adjei, who are part of the UCC collaboration team.

Developing Countries Should Employ Innovations to Fight Climate Change –Gina McCarthy

11 Oct, 2016 By louis Mensah

The Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy has called on developing countries to employ innovations to fight climate change.

“It is necessary to think of innovations that will bring people out of poverty and not create further impoverishment”.

The Administrator was speaking to the media after a panel discussion on the topic: “Opportunity and Innovation: How the US is leading Global Efforts to Respond to Climate Change” at the University of Cape Coast.

Gina McCarthy was of the view that it was time to be smarter in looking for solutions to the challenges that confront the environment or climate to create a safe and secured future.  According to her, the US for example, had reduced air pollution by as much as 70% and added that they would work together with Ghana to fight climate change. “We are here to support Ghana finding solutions to climate change challenges.

She said her mission in Ghana was to share best practices of the US with her Ghanaian counterparts so that together they could all determine solutions to the environmental problems of the country.

As part of the visit, she would also engage women fish processors who use improved fish smokers that reduce emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, decrease post-harvest losses of fish, and have higher efficiencies in fuel-wood utilization which contribute to improved health and profit margins among women traders.

In addition to this, she would have discussions with officials of the Ministry for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency on matters that bother on the environment.  She would also participate in other activities to be organised by some Ghanaian authorities. All these are meant to find out how the US could help Ghana to reduce carbon emissions.

Gina McCarthy and her entourage had earlier paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ghartey Ampiah. Discussions at the meeting centered on collaboration between UCC and her agency to effectively contribute to improving the environment to ensure food sufficiency, prevent post-harvest losses and also promote good health among Ghanaians.

Present at the meeting were the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K. T. Oduro; Dean, School of Biological Sciences, Prof. Johnson Boampong; Dr. Dennis Aheto who is the Project Manager USAID/UCC Fisheries and Coastal Management Capacity Building Support Project and also the Coordinator of the Centre for Coastal Management and Head, Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences,Dr. Noble Asare.

African Economic Research Consortium Officials Call on Vice-Chancellor

11 Oct, 2016 By louis Mensah

A delegation from the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) who are on working visit to UCC has called on the Vice-Chancellor at his office.

AERC is a major teaching and research organisation collaborating with the Department of Economics.

Each year, Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) students from the Department undertake elective courses in Nairobi for three months. The leader of the delegation, Dr. Innocent Matshe, who is the Director of Training at AERC, said the Department of Economics is a member of the AERC, therefore they decided to visit and senisitise senior management and final year students of the department about the activities and opportunities on offer by the group.

The visit was also intended to take stock of AERC funded projects and review the existing Memorandum of Understanding. Dr. Matshe said the time has come to route the University in major economic networks and circles to bring in more research collaborations and funding to support the training of much needed professionals in the economic field.

Dr. Matshe indicated that there were over 4,000 researchers in their network, for that matter to help strengthen economic decision making, efforts should be geared towards research and training. According to him currently there is an amount of $10bn available to be accessed but due to lack of capacity in sourcing funds, the money was still sitting idle.  “We need to build capacity where it is lacking, we have to do it together, because together we are stronger and can succeed faster”.

Responding the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ampiah called on the Department of Economics to try and bring other departments like the School of Agriculture to close the capacity gaps by building their capacity.

Prof. Ampiah urged the department to make their courses more friendly to get more students to enroll. “You have to dispel the notion that one has to be of some caliber before one could do economics”.

“We can build our own capacity if we pull our resources together, we can build something that cuts across”. He called on the leadership of the department to nurture it into a more international status by changing their modus of operandi from within. “Capacity building should start from within and transferred elsewhere. Break the shell and have more networks”.
