Auburn University Collaborates with University of Cape Coast

11 Aug, 2016 By louis Mensah

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K. T. Oduro has received a delegation from the Auburn University in the United States of America at his office.

The Auburn University is collaborating with the Institute of Education Planning and Administration (I.E.P.A).

Briefing the Pro Vice-Chancellor on their mission, a member of the team, Elizabeth Essamuah-Quansah, said her university has established a mutual partnership with the IEPA and hoped it would grow into a long-term one. She said they were in the University of Cape Coast to learn from their colleagues and also share their experiences with them.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oduro said the University was exploring ways of creating links with other universities; therefore, the fact that Auburn chose UCC over others was a sure sign that some level of progress was being made in that direction.

Prof. Oduro said leadership has become crucial at the basic level in the country and needed to be looked at critically. “It is not just in terms of the general systems but in learning as well. So as the premier institution in education we find this crucial”, he stated.

Prof. Oduro gave the assurance that management would do everything possible to sustain the collaboration to achieve its intended purpose.

“We support the initiative and looking forward to make it fruitful so that it will become programme oriented and not just a project that cannot be sustained”, he indicated.

The Director of IEPA, Dr. Rosemary S. Bosu and a Research Fellow of the Institute, Dr. Michael Boakye-Yiadom accompanied the delegation.  Present at the meeting were the Registrar, Mr. John K. Nyan and Acting Director of Public Affairs, Major K. Baah-Bentum (rtd.).

Training & Development Section Organises Workshop for Newly Appointed Provosts and Other Heads

11 Aug, 2016 By louis Mensah

A three-day training programme for newly appointed Provosts, Deans, Directors, Heads of Department and Coordinators of the University has been opened at the Capital Hill Hotel in Cape Coast.

The main objective of the programme is to build capacity to improve the academic and administrative performance of heads in the university.

It is also designed to build vibrant and high performing academic and administrative heads capable of providing sustainable quality academic and administrative leadership and effective financial management towards achieving the universities strategic plan in maintaining proper academic performance at all levels.

Some of the topics to be treated at the workshop are Budget preparation, Revised Financial and Stores regulations, Research Grant and Proposal writing, I. C. T. as a tool in improving Teaching and Learning and University Ranking and Visibility.

Others are Strengthening Campus Security for Peaceful Academic Environment, Crime Prevention Strategies and Entrepreneurial Strategies.

Opening the programme, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K. T. Oduro called on the participants to find ways of helping to nurture and grow the Collegiate System.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor asked the participants to think about where they wanted their respective offices to be in the near future saying, “as leaders you should know that you are in a position to help, so you must ask yourselves what you will do to facilitate the process”.

On the position of the University on the world and Africa rankings of universities, Prof. Oduro noted that the university was not well placed so workshops like this will help in preparing them as managers of the University in their own right to ensure that the university takes up its rightful position on the league table.

In a presentation, the Director of the Directorate of Research Innovation and Consultancy, Prof. Samuel K. Annim, who spoke on the topic “Proposal Grant Writing and Grant Sourcing”, called on participants to carve a niche for themselves and be driven by their area of expertise in order to win grants for the university.

“By the end of the programme we should all be well motivated and aggressive to write winnable proposals. Without this we cannot have any authority in our areas of competence”, he said.

Prof. Annim entreated the participants to develop “thick skin” to ensure that their proposals and programmes receive the needed funding.

The Director of DRIC indicated that the era when government subvention and regular grants were guaranteed was long gone. For this reason, he said it was essential to look elsewhere for funding to support the university’s activities.

“One way of getting funds into the university now is through Grant Sourcing. We must all be aggressive now to pursue this direction of funding”, he advised.

He explained that writing papers for promotion, or conceptualising an idea for Ph.D or M.Phil was different from writing proposal for grant.

He mentioned that it has been realised that the real problem in writing grant proposals was the issue of capacity. He therefore said the programme has come at “an appropriate time to provide them with the requisite tools to begin their schedules as leaders”.

Other facilitators of the 3-day programme are Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah and Prof. Kofi Awusabo Asare.

PRESS RELEASE: ATL FM Nominated for World Quality Commitment Award

11 Aug, 2016 By louis Mensah

The selection committee of the Business Initiative Directions (BID), an organization working globally in the promotion and practical application of the Total Quality Management Models has selected ATL FM of the University of Cape coast to receive the World Quality Commitment award in the Gold Category.

The ceremony scheduled for Sunday October 16, 2016 in Paris, France is to recognise the contribution of ATL FM in terms of leadership, quality, innovation and excellence.

In a letter signed by the President of BID, Jose E. Prieto to the Management of ATL FM, it noted that, the decision to present the award is as a result of research and analysis carried out through quality hunters, leaders, entrepreneurs and experts in quality directed by BID.

The primary mission at BID is the recognition, education and promotion of quality culture among leaders of prominent companies and organizations.

BID does its part every year by promoting, producing and sponsoring conferences, seminars, publications and awards which highlight the ideas and accomplishments of those leaders that relate to the implementation of Total Quality Management.

BID leadership as global reference in the promotion of the Quality Culture is reinforced and reestablished every year, through special awards, designed to recognize the enormous effort put into play by the companies and institutions, leaders of their own fields, into the establishment and execution of Total Quality Models.

This continuous support provided by BID is accomplished taking into account and respecting unique quality criteria as defined by the demands and environment of each market in which businesses around the world operate.

The selection committee considered a criteria used in the QC 100 total quality management model which in conjunction with BID's quality mix technology, aims at strengthening Award recipients' position by way of leadership and growth.

Those nominated to receive the BID awards are selected through a process of consultation in which BID's Honorary Members, Pragmasters, Quality Ambassadors and Quality Hunters, participate, along with BID's panel of experts.

The companies, organizations and leaders selected are those who have verifiable quality values or have made exceptional contributions to Quality Culture in one or more of the following fields:

Excellence in leadership and management
Quality and excellence in products and services
Brand prestige or brand leadership in specific business areas
Innovation, development and technological production

Once the nominees considered to have developed Quality in an exceptional manner are selected, in one or more of these areas, the technical panel carries out an analysis of each organization or company, evaluating the following criteria:

  • Customer satisfaction
  • Communication strategies
  • Benchmarking
  • Information gathering and data analysis
  • Leadership
  • Planning and decision-making
  • Human resources
  • Talent management
  • Education and continuous training of personnel
  • Efficiency in production processes
  • Business results
  • ISO 9001 compliance
  • Implementation of Total Quality Models
  • QC100 Criteria

Those organizations reaching the highest level of evaluation are selected to receive the BID Quality Award at the annual ceremony, as a recognition for excellence and commitment to Quality Values.

The WQC Convention will take place in Paris on October 15th and 16th, 2016, with the award presentation being held at the Spectacular Complex formed by the Palais des Congres Convention Hall of Paris and the Hyatt Regency Paris Etoile (Concorde La Fayette) near the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysees. Delegates of the award-winning businesses and organizations will participate along with their colleagues.

Upon receipt of the WQC Award in Paris, ATL FM will join a select group of previous BID award recipients and as a result strengthen its prestige on the international front.

Outgoing Provost of College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Prof. S. Y. Mensah hands over to incoming Provost, Prof. L. K. Sam-Amoah

10 Aug, 2016 By Anonymous (not Verified)

The outgoing Provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Prof. S. Y. Mensah has handed over to incoming Provost, Prof. L. K. Sam-Amoah on Tuesday 9th August, 2016, at the Academic Board Chamber, UCC In his opening remarks, Prof. S. Y. Mensah (Outgoing Provost) thanked members for their presence and briefly expressed his gratitude to members for their support during his tenure. He shed light on some of the challenges the College had encountered since its inception two years ago. He reiterated the fact that the collegiate system came into force without financial support from the University. So the College had to rely on AFUF for its operations over the years.

He added that frantic efforts were made to initiate strategies to solicit funding from other sources, hence, the formation of the College Fund Raising Committee. He informed members that the Fund Raising Committee came out with some viable initiatives and strategies he hopes would yield results in the future. In spite of the financial constraints, he was happy to say that the College had been sustained.

He urged members to give the incoming Provost all the necessary support he needs to lift the College up. He advised the incoming Provost, Prof. L. K. Sam-Amoah, to specially take note of matters concerning Appointments and Promotions of academic staff, and the matriculation of students in the College. He added that his approach to the aforementioned should not be confrontational but with tact. He mentioned that the University has provided a brand new generator for use by the College which has to be installed. In concluding, he prayed that the College would grow from strength to strength in order to raise the standard of academic teaching and research.

He thanked members for their support during his reign and wished members well in the execution of their leadership roles for the good of the College and the University. Prof. L. K. Sam-Amoah, the incoming Provost, in his response, emphasized the fact that his new position as the Provost of the College gives him a sense of inadequacy. He explained that his feeling of inadequacy comes as a result of the fact that he is stepping into the shoes of a great leader whose achievements in academics are undoubtedly that of an accomplished one. He, therefore, recognizes the challenge ahead of him. He added that his new role also gives him a sense of optimism because it is a leadership of teamwork.

He admitted that he cannot be successful as a Provost without the able support of his colleague academics and the various administrators within the College. He acknowledged the challenges ahead and urged members to join hands to make the College great. He also thanked the outgoing Provost for his hard work over the years and implored for his unending support and counsel to the College even as he retires from active service from the University. Members present included all Deans, Vice Deans, Heads of Department, Coordinators and Faculty Officers of the College. The ceremony was chaired by the outgoing Provost, Prof. S. Y. Mensah, and supported by Mrs J. Atta-Quartey, outgoing College Registrar.

Vice-Chancellor Ends Tour to Colleges of Education

09 Aug, 2016 By louis Mensah

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole has rounded up his nationwide visit to Colleges of Education (CoE) in the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions.

With the elevation of the Colleges of Education in the country to tertiary status, the relationship between the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the Colleges has taken a new dimension. This implies that the relationship goes beyond the assessment of students of the colleges and includes mentorship in the areas of academic work, governance, staff development and capacity building. Currently, 45 out of the 46 Colleges have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and Affiliation Agreement with UCC.

Interacting with the various Colleges in the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions, Prof. Kuupole expressed gratitude to the Colleges for accepting to work with UCC, adding that “The renewal of this relationship places a greater responsibility on us to offer the best services to the 45 Colleges of Education”.  He gave the assurance that UCC as the mentor institution would continue to provide the needed support and assistance to help the colleges grow. He indicated that though such visits were not regular, the management of the Institute of Education would intensify interactions with the Colleges during the subsequent academic years.

Prof. Kuupole advised the Colleges to position themselves strategically as tertiary institutions with a change of mindset and be innovative in their activities. He indicated that their previous mode of operation under the Ghana Education Service was different from the tertiary system. He noted that once the conditions of service for the Colleges become operational, tutors would be promoted based on their research output and stressed that “In the tertiary institution, you either publish or perish.”  He indicated that the University of Cape Coast through the Institute of Education has outlined training workshops for all categories of staff in the Colleges to enhance their competence and skills. Alternatively, he said that staff in the Colleges could take advantage of the numerous postgraduate programmes in UCC to upgrade themselves.

The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by a team from the Institute of Education comprising the Director, Prof. Frederick Ocansey; Coordinator, Research and Publications, Dr. Afredina Z. Kuupole, Senior Assistant Registrar, Mr. Prosper Nyatuame and Accountant, Mr. Daniel Abina Dwaase. In the Ashanti Region, the team visited Wesley College of Education, St. Louis College of Education, Agona S. D. A College of Education, Mampong Technical College of Education, Offinso College of Education St. Monica’s College of Education and Akrokerri College of Education. Colleges visited in the Brong Ahafo Region were Atebubu College of Education, Berekum College of Education, St. Ambrose College of Education and St. Joseph College of Education.
