14 Jun, 2023 By DIS

Fresh students of University of Cape Coast pursuing various undergraduate and post graduate courses at the College of Distance Education (CoDE) have been cautioned to commit themselves to achieve academic excellence and be well disciplined in order to sustain the legacy of the Institution.

The Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, gave the advice at a matriculation ceremony which saw a total of 8, 475 fresh students take the oath of matriculation for the 2022/23 Academic Year.

The matriculation took place in-person at the Holy Child College of Education in Takoradi and virtually at all the study centres of CoDE-UCC throughout the country.

Out of the total number of students, 3, 268 males and 3, 324 females were admitted to read undergraduate courses, while 1,126 males and 757 females were offered admission to pursue postgraduate programmes.

Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong further admonished the fresh students to adhere to the rules and regulations governing the University to ensure their successful passage through the latest phase of their academic journey.

These rules, he explained, were contained in the Students' Handbook, Academic Programmes, Policies and Regulations, as well as Brochure on Graduate Studies and urged the students to read them thoroughly in order to be abreast of the rules and regulations governing the University.

According to him, conducive and congenial teaching, learning and entertaining environment had also been created by the University.

The Vice-Chancellor implored the students to take advantage of the provisions to enhance their learning, while tapping into the rich knowledge of professors, senior lecturers, lecturers and Research Fellows.

He charged the fresh students to work hard to merit the various certificates they would earn at the end of their respective programmes.

"Your primary objective of coming to this university is to study hard towards attainment of your degrees or diplomas. Always remember that you need to work hard on this journey and that hard work never kills" he counseled.

Prof. Boampong, therefore, reminded the students that the Sam Jonah Library (University Library) had provided them with both physical and virtual services, as well as research support services to facilitate their studies.

He told the fresh students that examination malpractice was the pet hate of the University and advised the students to attend lectures regularly, as well as focus on their studies to become responsible leaders.

The Vice-Chancellor used the occasion to entreat the students to keep the environment of their study centres clean and in good shape.

Channel your Energies into Farming, not Galamsey – Youth Advised

14 Jun, 2023 By DIS

A Senior Citizen, Mr. Yaw Opoku Asiama, has raised alarm over the increasing spate at which young people are engaging in illegal mining (popularly called galamsey) to the detriment of agriculture.

He expressed dismay over the urge by the youth to indulge in illegal mining instead of farming where more hands are needed. He said many individuals engaged in extensive commercial farming were far advanced in age and physically weak hence, the youth should be more interested in that field.

‘I have left my 5 acres of farm at Effutu with this beautiful grey hair. I can’t weed 5 acres at my age. We need to inculcate the love of farming in our up-and-coming generation instead of them using their strength to do galamsey’ he explained.

Mr. Asiama, who is a retired lecturer, School of Agriculture-UCC, said this when he took his turn at the Research Seminar Series organised by the School of Agriculture of the University of Cape Coast.

Held at the Sasakawa Conference Room, the Seminar was on the topic, ‘Ghana’s Agriculture: Which way in the light of Climate Change.’

He also called on government to revive the defunct Farm Institutes to produce professional farmers and farm workers.

Mr. Asiama, fondly known as Kwame Nkrumah, admitted that estate developers were the major competitors of farmers and they were using their affluence to grab lands to put up magnificent buildings.

Mr. Asiama also called for the institution of a Land Use Policy aimed at demarcating areas for estate developers and agriculture.

He called for the establishment of a Weather Commission mandated to study the weather to re-demarcate the agro-ecological zones of the country.

‘As human beings, we don’t have the power to alter climate change to suit our agriculture but we can do serious research to change agriculture to suit climate change’ he stressed.

In his view, the time had come for the country to place emphasis on root and tuber crops, indicating, ‘These are very resilient and can withstand weather changes and can also serve as animal feed for poultry.’

Like Cocoa Marketing Board, he appealed to government to set up marketing boards for stable crops to enable the farmer earn money irrespective of any uncertainty that would hit the agriculture sector.

Mr. Asiama encouraged import substitution of products made in Ghana to decrease the over reliance of foreign products.

He discouraged the misuse of pesticides and herbicides in farming and called on farmers to use farm machinery in their farms.

Mr. Asiama implored agriculture academicians in the tertiary institutions to set up an Agric Advisory Council to be the driving force behind agriculture in the country rather than politicians.

The Seminar was chaired by a former Provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Prof. LK Sam Amoah.

School of Nursing and Midwifery instills Proper Time Management in students

14 Jun, 2023 By DIS

The School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Cape Coast is seeking to stimulate significant positive change in the attitude of student nurses and midwives towards time management through targeted activities.

To that end, the School, through the Department of Adult Health, has organised a workshop to inculcate proper time management in students and prevail upon them to discard the mentality of ‘Ghana Man Time’ (Ghanaians’ own time) before they transition into the world of work.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Time Management,’ a Youth Coach and Resident Pastor of Pentecost Students and Associates (PENSA-UCC) , Pastor Frank Akonnor,  underscored the need for  students to demonstrate total commitment to time and its management towards achieving greater things for themselves.

img-20230613-wa0029.jpg

According to him, good time management "leads to profitability and productivity."

He observed that most students waste too much of their time on unnecessary issues that add no value to their lives and, therefore, grew up without achieving their goals.

The Youth Coach added, "It is difficult to count many great achievers and influencers of the world who failed to attach importance to time."

Offering tips on good time management, Pastor Akonnor asked the students to create a daily planner, give each task a time limit, set reminders for all tasks, avoid distractions and establish routines. He said there were enormous benefits of time management, mentioning achievement of goals, increased productivity, and better work-life balance.

EU-CONEXUS to partner up with the Africa Center of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) of University of Cape Coast (Ghana, Africa)

13 Jun, 2023 By louis Mensah

EU-CONEXUS is proud to announce its new partnership with the Africa Center of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) of University of Cape Coast (Ghana, Africa). Together, both universities hope to combine resources to pursue and strengthen global research and innovation on smart urban coastal sustainability.

In line with a political vision of constructive EU-AU cooperation

Long term partners, Europe and Africa have developed broad and evolving cooperation across various policy areas such as research and innovation. In 2022, the European Union and the African Union have developed a “Joint Vision for a renewed partnership” which include “actions to preserve the climate, environment and biodiversity, sustainable and inclusive economic growth.” The short term actions of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda (2022) pursue the objective of “strengthening cooperation between AU-EU higher education institutions, research centers and organisations, and capacity building partnerships …(e.g. by involving European University Alliances..)”.

Therefore, this new partnership between EU-CONEXUS and ACECoR will contribute towards achieving these policy objectives as well as building a joint vision for cooperation between the two continents.

“Coastal Management & Resilience” at core: ACECoR and EU-CONEXUS join forces for smart urban coastal sustainability.

Together, EU-CONEXUS and ACECoR wish to develop mobility and exchange programmes for students and staff and strengthen scientific cooperation for sharing knowledge, expertise and technologies on Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability (SmUCS) topics. Indeed, leading research on SmUCS related topics such as coastal geomorphology and engineering, climate change adaptation and mitigation, blue economy, governance and social resilience, disaster risk management and migration or even ecosystems and biodiversity in order to solve and prevent coastal degradation, the Africa Center of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) of University of Cape Coast plays a major role in providing knowledge for coastal management and resilience in Africa.

Benefiting from the support of international experts and strategic partners (World Bank, University of Liverpool, Department of the USA, National Geographic, The World Academy of Science…), ACECoR seeks excellence in all its work. Created in 2013 the Centre has produced 77 peer-reviewed publications (including 43 verified by World Bank) and is engaged in various locally and internationally funded projects. ACECoR researchers are active members of the Ghanaian scientific review ‘Journal of fisheries and coastal management.”

By joining forces EU-CONEXUS and ACECoR are combining their strengths and knowledge. Both aim at improving their understanding of global coastal risks by sharing the particularities of their respective coastlines, in order to better understand the challenges of smart urban coastal sustainability.

University of Cape Coast in a glimpse

With its Africa Center of Excellence in Coastal Resilience, University of Cape Coastis already a leading actor in Coastal Management in Africa. Ranked amongst the best universities in Africa – #4 university in Africa – and amongst the most influent in terms of research at a global scale (ranked #24 amongst 400), Cape Coast University welcomes 28,451 FTE Students. ACECoR recently received international accreditation for a cluster of 4 of its academic postgraduate programmes in Integrated coastal zone management and fisheries for PhD and masters’ programmes from AQAS e.V. – The Agency for Quality Assurance through Accreditation of Study Programs in higher educations in Germany and overseas.

Just like EU-CONEXUS members, the University of Cape Coastis also very recognized regionally within its territory due to its contributions to collaborative innovations, working alongside NGOs as well as private and public organisations, in order to provide new products, new services, new processes and solutions for the community.

Sharing values and a common mission to act for smart urban coastal sustainability, this new partnership between EU-CONEXUS and ACECoR marks a great step forward in terms of worldwide collaboration on the topic.
