The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS),under the auspices of The United Nations

Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) programme, via its

Research Grants Scheme (RGS), has donated laboratory research equipment and

chemical worth 8,000 USD to Laser and Fibre Optics Centre (LAFOC), Department

of Physics, School of Physical Sciences, College of Agriculture and Natural

Sciences, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana. This grant was made

possible through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

The research items are UV-Vis double beam spectrophotometer, Sonicator and

Cholesterol.

Dr Jerry Opoku-Ansah, a lecturer at the Department of Physics and researcher at

LAFOC who led the RGS, explained that the equipment has cross-boundary

applications in the natural, medical and allied health sciences. The UV-Vis

spectrophotometer with the double-beam optical system has diverse applications,

including general research, pharmaceutical, biochemical and clinical laboratory use,

new material development, and quality control. The Sonicator is a compact and

practical ultrasonic processor ideal for standard cell disruption and other small

volume applications.

He expressed appreciation to The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and its

funding organization the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency

(Sida) for the kind gesture.
