Officials from GCNM Confer with Vice-Chancellor

A three-member delegation from the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, at the Council Chamber. Dr. Jemima Dennis-Antwi, the President of the College, who led the delegation, said the visit was to seek collaborations with the University in order to train and equip nursing students with clinical practice, as well as the academic component of the discipline. In this regard, nursing students could pursue Masters up to Ph. D levels and still have solid grasp of the clinical aspect of the profession. To this end, the president said the University and GCNM should be able to determine the duration of the programmes and map out the modalities for students of the College who were ready to pursue either Master's degree or Ph. D, taking cognizance of their area of specialty. Dr. Dennis-Antwi noted that the curriculum of the College would be designed to suit the academic calendar of the University. "So we believe that we'll prepare the people(Students) and you(UCC) will come in and add value to them," she said. she added that "there is the need to synergize education for specialisation or vice-versa". Receiving the delegation, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah lauded the idea and added that in the long run, the University would benefit from professionals of the College. "It will be win-win situation, we will train your people as professionals academically, as well as professionally qualified to be in the University," he pointed out. The Vice-Chancellor suggested that a committee comprising members from the College of Health and Allied Sciences and the GCNM should be set-up to look at the roadmap for the collaborations. The committee, he noted, should submit a report on its findings which would culminate into the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the GCNM. GCNM is a statutory professional college, established to promote specialist education, continuous professional development, and postgraduate nursing, midwifery and related programmes. It also contributes to the formulation of policies to improve the provision of quality health care in Ghana. The delegation included the Rector of GCNM, Mrs. Hannah A. O Acquah and the Vice-president of GCNM, Mrs. Doris Richardson. The Registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan; the Director of Academic Affairs, Mr. Jeff Onyame; the Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof. Harold Amonoo -Kuofi; the Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Prof. Alexander Pappoe; the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Major (Rtd) Kofi Baah-Bentum and the Assistant Registrar of the Institutional Affiliation Office, Mr. Justice Boateng, were present during the meeting.

2017 ICPA focusing on the theme:

"Managing across Organizational Boundaries: Innovation and Collaboration"

Whether grappling with natural disasters or delivering day-to-day public services as education or health care, public bodies increasingly must work with other organizations to get the job done. Similarly, government managers themselves often need to identify and address risks in ways that require cooperating across multiple organizations to reduce the potential for serious harm.

The growth of complexity is a major reason for these developments—that is, increased complexity in the types of services that public bodies deliver; waves of technology; and organizational sprawl. To the extent that complexity leads to problems that extend beyond any one organization’s boundaries, these problems are likely to be with us for a long time.

2017 ICPA will address ways of managing governmental organizations to focus problems or deliver services that require cooperation across organizational boundaries. What kinds of governance work best to ensure collaborative efforts across governmental organizations—or between government and such private organizations as NGOs, for-profit contractors and other third-parties—that ensure effective public service delivery? How should these relationships be structured? Can new technologies help to bridge organizational gaps and provide public services seamlessly?

Papers and proposals that address Managing across Organizational Boundaries: Innovation and Collaboration are welcome, especially those that use case studies and comparative analyses between and within countries to illustrate promising practices and significant lessons. We are especially receptive to proposals that focus on the sub-themes below. However, we encourage all submissions that bring new ideas to any aspect of the overall conference theme.

2017 ISWAS focusing on the theme:

"Social and Economic Development in West Africa from Global Perspective"

Africa is one of the most dynamic developing regions worldwide, and the first International Symposium on West African Studies(ISWAS) is concurrently conducted with 2017 International Conference on Public Administration (ICPA) in Ghana. The first ISWAS calls for paper and participation. The Center for West African Studies (CWAS) of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China is established through the platform of Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China and resources of our partnership and alumni in West Africa.

The establishment of Center for West African Studies is in line with Chinese National Philosophy and Social Sciences “Going Global” Strategy with the need to improve the image of UESTC in West African countries; to enhance China’s influence in West Africa; to strengthen China-Africa collaborations and to serve as a bridge for researchers and practitioners from China, West Africa and beyond to identify and meet the needs of West African development.

Authors have the option to have their accepted papers published in the official Proceedings of 2017

International Conference on Public Administration with a special column on Social and Economic Development in West Africa from global perspective by Press of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Authors who wish to have their papers nominated for “Best Paper Awards“ and are so selected will not have their papers published in the proceedings if they prefer to have them blind reviewed by recommended journals. The Proceedings will be indexed by ISI Proceedings (Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Social Science & Humanities CPCI-SSH, named in the Index to Social Science and Humanities Proceedings - ISSHP) through ISI Web of Knowledge in the United States.

The submitted papers should be written in English with Microsoft Word 2007 or higher edition. Authors should identify the primary sub-theme where their abstract/paper should be placed. The abstract should describe the paper’s contents and briefly explain the paper’s relevance to the conference theme. Abstracts must identify the author(s) affiliation, email address, and should not exceed one page.

CTS Trains Tutors of College of Health, Yamfo

The Centre for Teaching Support of the University of Cape Coast has organised a training workshop for the College of Health, Yamfo (CoHY). The training programme which was facilitated by the Institutional Affiliation Office forms part of UCC’s responsibility to build the staff capacity of institutions being mentored by the University. The objectives of the two-day programme were to develop hands-on capacity building skills of the in the preparation and use of Course Outlines during a tutor’s first contact with students in the classroom as well as preparation of multiple choice and essay type test items. It was also to engage the tutors to adopt effective ways of evaluating students’ progress and providing students’ feedback of their performances. In addition, the workshop aimed at helping the tutors to explore different strategies and basic techniques of supervising students’ project work. Tutors of CoHY were taken through topics such as Multiple Choice Items, Essay Type Questions, Assessment and Feedback, Strategies for Effective First Day/Week in Class, Project work supervision and Evaluation, Certification The Director of CTS, Dr. Douglas D. Agyei, and Dr. Godwin Aboagye, from the College of Education Studies, UCC, were the Resource Persons for the workshop. They engaged the tutors through interactive, participatory and experiential as well as formal presentations, group discussions, hands-on activities and poster presentations. Sharing their thoughts after the workshop, the tutors of CoHY expressed gratitude for the depth of knowledge gained and skills acquired from the various sessions of the training and appealed to the University to periodical organise such programmes for them. They also recommended that UCC should extend the workshop to other institutions which were being mentored by the University.

UCC Management and Student Leaders Strategise to Meet Expectation of Students

A two-day retreat has been held for both management and students of the University to find solutions to some challenges affecting the welfare of students on campus. The event was also to serve as a wake-up call on the various departments of the University to be proactive in the discharge of their duties. Opening the retreat, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, said the retreat was not to find fault but to bring to bear situations on the ground and brainstorm the way forward. Prominent among the concerns raised at the two-day retreat were; bureaucracy in the system; poor internet accessibility; inadequate security personnel, poor state of shuttle buses; poor state of some lecture theatres and indiscipline among some students. Others were non-involvement of the JCRCs in decisions concerning students, non-functioning street lights; ban of some social events; creating employment opportunities for students; late release of academic results; improving the website outlook among others. Highlights of resolutions at the retreat included the following: • All policies of the Office of the Dean of students should be put on the University’s website • Students registration should be digitalised to eliminate all forms of inconvenience especially for first year students. • Students should be encouraged to make use of the numerous e-resources of the Sam Jonah Library • SRC should be the Umbrella body to handle all issues affecting students of the University • There should be routine maintenance for halls of residence/hostels as well as lecture theatres • Examination results of students should be released on time • Introduction of graduate assistantship concept • Proper regulation of the shuttle buses on campus • Enhance security on campus to ensure safety of staff, students and properties • Counselling services should be strengthened with the use of technological applications • University Health Services should make the health of students a priority A committee was therefore formed to ensure the implementation of the resolutions of the retreat with the Vice-Dean of Students as the Chairman. ADB Furnishes Office Complex for School of Allied Health Sciences

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, has inaugurated a fully furnished office complex for the School of Allied Health Sciences under the College of Health and Allied Sciences (CoHAS). The offices, numbering 24, situated at the down floor of the C. A. Ackah Theatre Complex, were furnished by the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB). The equipment, which comprises brand new desktop computers and its accessories, office furniture, photocopier machine, cabinets, stationaries, amongst others, worth GH 140, 000. Speaking at the inauguration,Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, expressed appreciation to ADB for the gesture. Prof. Ampiah noted that the donation would further deepened the existing relationship between the University and the Bank. He advised staff of the School to make good use of the items so as to prolong their lifespan. The Managing Director (MD) of ADB, Mr. Daniel Asiedu, said the donation formed part of the Bank's corporate social responsibility. He stressed that ADB was looking for other relationship opportunities to assist other faculties and schools in the University to promote teaching and learning. The Provost of the CoHAS, Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi, expressed gratitude to ADB for the assistance. "This presentation has come as a huge relief to the College," he said. Later, The Vice-Chancellor and his entourage, as well as the Managing Director and some staff- members of ADB, were conducted around the offices. Earlier, the Managing Director of ADB, Mr. Daniel Asiedu, paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor to introduce himself and also discuss opportunities for partnership with the University. During the meeting, the Managing Director said that ADB would render quality services to members of the University community so as to become the number one Bank of the University. He stressed that ADB would like to partner the School of Nursing, the Faculty of Law and the Diagnosis Center at the School of Medical Sciences (SMS). He used the opportunity of his visit to request a land to enable ADB to put up a new bank to serve its teeming customers on campus. Responding, Prof. Ampiah thanked Mr. Asiedu and his accompanying delegation for the visit. He noted that the University was open to every partnership with ADB, adding that the University based its loyalty to banks which were proactive and offered affordable charges and rates to staff and students of the University. The Vice-Chancellor announced that a land had been earmarked for banks on campus. "We're friends to all banks, but we're not committed to any bank," said Prof. Ampiah. He welcomed the idea by ADB to assist the School of Medical Sciences to acquire Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scan and other equipment for the Diagnosis Centre at the SMS.

Faculty of Law Student Donates to University Basic School

A student at the Faculty of Law of the University of Cape Coast, Mr. Francis Korankye-Sakyi, has presented a set of Jerseys and one football to the University Basic School Annex. Presenting the items, Mr. Korankye-Sakyi said the donation formed part of his commitment towards the promotion of sports in the new school. He stressed the need for school children to be given the opportunity to develop their talents through exposure to every available sporting discipline. Mr. Korankye-Sakyi appealed to the pupils to learn hard to justify the huge parental investments being made in them. Receiving the items on behalf of the School, the Headteacher, Ms. Agnes Gyimah expressed gratitude to Mr. Korankye-Sakyi for his immense contribution towards the promotion of sporting activities in the new School. She assured the donor that the items would be put to good use. Ms. Gyimah urged other public-spirited individuals and organisations to emulate Mr. Korankye-Sakyi.

First Year Graduate Students Empowered in E-Resources and Mendeley

First year students of the School of Graduate Studies have received intensive training in e-resources and Mendeley at a seminar on campus. The seminar, held in collaboration with the Sam Jonah Library, was aimed at building the capacity of the students to be abreast of e-resources and Mendeley during their academic research. A senior Assistant Librarian, Ms. Paulina Nana Yaa Kwafoa, who took the students through searching information on the Internet, said Google, Meta Search Engine, Subject Gateway and Data bases are examples of search engines. She stressed that because there was no system of quality control in the use of search engines, students should be skillful in their research. "You need to be skillful in your research, you need to know what to look out for when using search engines because anybody at all can put anything on the internet," she advised. Mr. Kwasi Opuni Karikari, one of the resource persons who made a presentation on Mendeley, said it is a free cross-platform application (Windows, OSX, Linux, iOS, Android) that helps one to organize and manage the materials one rely on to do his research. He said Mendeley analyses users' activity to recommend new reading materials and to suggest potential contacts. He said Mendeley helps to create groups to share reference materials and work together with others and therefore, called on students to use Mendeley's word processor plugin to easily create citations for materials one have added to his library. Present at the seminar were the Vice-Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Prof. Kamkam Boadu and the University Librarian, Mr. Clement Entsua-Mensah.

Vice-Chancellor Inaugurates Strategic Plan Review Committee

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, has inaugurated a 24-member Strategic Plan Review Committee, which is chaired by Prof. Kofi Awusabo-Asare. The Committee is expected to review the old Corporate Strategic Plan, which will end in 2017, and develop a new plan, spanning from 2018 to 2022. Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah expressed confidence in the Committee and urged them to come out with a comprehensive Strategic Plan to assist the operations of the University. He charged the Committee to ensure top-down and bottom-up approaches when drawing up the Strategic Plan. Prof. Ampiah urged the Committee to factor in the Agenda 2030 and the Vice-Chancellor’s vision when coming out with the new Corporate Strategic Plan. For his part, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Kofi Awusabo -Asare, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for the confidence and trust reposed in them. He added that members of the Committee would justify the confidence and trust placed in them and come out with the third Strategic Plan. Full list of the Strategic Plan Review Committee members: 1.
