The Tertiary Education Scholarship Trust (TEST) is calling for applications and renewal of scholarship awards for the 2016/17 academic year. The scholarship scheme offers both full and partial scholarships to bright but needy students in Ghana to enable them attain tertiary education. The following are the deadlines for application:
a) Tuesday 30th June 2016, for first time applicants (continuing students) and renewal of existing scholarship awards
b) Monday 31st August 2016, for first year students (freshers)
Students who wish to apply can download application forms from www.testforghana.com.  Application guidelines can also be found on the website. Students who are already beneficiaries of the scheme are expected to fill renewal forms in order for them to continue to enjoy the scheme. Students who are already on the scholarship are to note that renewal is not automatic, hence, submitting a renewal form before the stipulated deadline is of much essence.

UCC Chancellor Wins Prestigious Award

The Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Sir (Dr.) Sam Jonah, has received a lifetime achievement award at the West African edition of the Ernst and Young (EY) World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, held in Lagos, Nigeria on Friday February 5, 2016. The EY Entrepreneur Awards recognises the world’s most successful and innovative entrepreneurs by identifying and acknowledging their outstanding achievements within successful growing of dynamic businesses. Sir Jonah who is also the Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital, an equity fund based in Johannesburg, South Africa is one of Africa's most prominent businessmen, a giant in global business, and internationally recognised as a leading business executive. He was educated at Adisadel College in Ghana, Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall and The Imperial College of Science & Technology, London. This adds to the numerous list of awards and honours bestowed on Sir Jonah by both local and international organisations and universities. Apart from Sir Jonah, two other Ghanaian entrepreneurs: Founder and Managing Director of Kinapharma and Healthilife, Mr Kofi Nsiah-Poku; and Founder and Chairman of Kasapreko Limited, Dr. Kwabena Adjei were also given awards at the ceremony.

(iv) G.C.E Ordinary Level with a minimum of 5 credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Biology/ Agriculture and Chemistry.      Entry by Mature Examination: Applicants who do not meet the specified requirements in (A1, A2 & A3) above can gain admission to the programme when they pass a Mature Students Entrance Examination (MEE) between 16th April and 1st May 2016 to be organized at selected Study Centres throughout Ghana; a.Applicants should have a minimum certificate in WASSCE/ SSSCE or G.C.E ‘O’ Level with passes in; English or Mathematics and any two (2) other subjects. b.Applicants who are products of Vocational and Technical Institutions and are currently teaching can apply to take part in the Mature Students Entrance Examination. c.Applicants should be at least 25 years.                     BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAMMES    A4.  2-YEAR BACHELOR DEGREE IN BASIC EDUCATION (PDE) Applicants must possess Diploma in Basic Education / Diploma in Psychology and Foundations of Education / Diploma in Early Childhood Education awarded by UCC or any recognized institution.     A5. 2-YEAR BACHELOR DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY AND FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION (BPF)  Applicants must possess Diploma in Psychology and Foundations of Education/ Diploma in Basic Education / Diploma in Early Childhood Education awarded by UCC or any recognized institution.   6.   3-YEAR BACHELOR DEGREE IN BASIC EDUCATION (3PDE) a.Applicants to this programme must be basic school teachers either in the public or private   schools and must have at least one year teaching experience. b.Applicants must be holders of Specialist Certificates and Diploma in subjects other than Education.      B.      BUSINESS PROGRAMMES   B1.      3-YEAR DIPLOMA IN COMMERCE (DCO)        a.     Applicants should be in full-time employment at the time of applying.        b.     For direct entry, applicants must possess any one of the following (from i-ix) i.Professional Accountancy Certificate with a minimum of Part 1 of:  

  •   Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana),
  •   Chartered Institute of Management Accountants,
  •   Association of Certified Chartered Accountants,
  •   Institute of Bankers,
  •   Ghana Accounting Technicians Examination (GAT) and Accounting Technicians Scheme West Africa (ATSWA).

  In addition to the above, applicants should possess passes in Mathematics and English.   ii.WASSCE passes (A1-C6) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus 2 elective subjects including Accounting.   iii.SSSCE passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus 2 elective subjects including Accounting.   iv.General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE) and RSA Stage II with at least grade D in 5 subjects including Accounting, Business Management, English Language and Mathematics.   v.Advanced Business Certificate Examination (ABCE) and RSA Stage III with passes in three (3) subjects including Financial Accounting and Economics with grades D or better. In addition applicants must possess passes in English and Mathematics with grades C6 in WASSCE, D in SSCE or credit (6) at ‘O’ Level or better.   vi. London Chamber of Commerce (Intermediate) with three passes in subjects including Financial Accounting, Economics and Management. In addition applicants must possess passes in English and Mathematics with grades C6 in WASSCE, D in SSCE or credit (6) at ‘O’ Level or better.   vii.G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with a minimum of 5 credits in 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Financial Accounting.   viii.G.C.E. ‘A’ Level with passes in Two (2) subjects including Accounting with grades not lower than D. a.All applicants to this programme must be basic school teachers either in the public or private schools and must have at least one year teaching experience.
b.For direct entry, applicants must possess any one of the following:
(i)WASSCE passes (A1-C6) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Integrated Science, Mathematics plus 2 elective science subjects.
(ii)SSSCE passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Integrated Science, Mathematics plus 2 elective science subjects.
(iii) General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) ‘A’ Level with passes in Two (2) science subjects with grades not lower than D.  In addition, they must possess credits at G.C.E. ‘O’ Level in Mathematics and English.
(iv) G.C.E Ordinary Level with a minimum of 5 credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Biology/ Agriculture and Chemistry.
 
 
 Entry by Mature Examination:
Applicants who do not meet the specified requirements in (A1, A2 & A3) above can gain admission to the programme when they pass a Mature Students Entrance Examination (MEE) between 16th April and 1st May 2016 to be organized at selected Study Centres throughout Ghana; 
a.Applicants should have a minimum certificate in WASSCE/ SSSCE or G.C.E ‘O’ Level with passes in; English or Mathematics and any two (2) other subjects.
b.Applicants who are products of Vocational and Technical Institutions and are currently teaching can apply to take part in the Mature Students Entrance Examination.
c.Applicants should be at least 25 years.
 
                 
BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAMMES
 
 A4.  2-YEAR BACHELOR DEGREE IN BASIC EDUCATION (PDE)
Applicants must possess Diploma in Basic Education / Diploma in Psychology and Foundations of Education / Diploma in Early Childhood Education awarded by UCC or any recognized institution. 
 
 
A5. 2-YEAR BACHELOR DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY AND FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION (BPF)
 Applicants must possess Diploma in Psychology and Foundations of Education/ Diploma in Basic Education / Diploma in Early Childhood Education awarded by UCC or any recognized institution. 
 
6.   3-YEAR BACHELOR DEGREE IN BASIC EDUCATION (3PDE)
a.Applicants to this programme must be basic school teachers either in the public or private   schools and must have at least one year teaching experience.
b.Applicants must be holders of Specialist Certificates and Diploma in subjects other than Education.  
 
 B.      BUSINESS PROGRAMMES 
 
B1.      3-YEAR DIPLOMA IN COMMERCE (DCO)
       a.     Applicants should be in full-time employment at the time of applying.
       b.     For direct entry, applicants must possess any one of the following (from i-ix)
i.Professional Accountancy Certificate with a minimum of Part 1 of:
 

  •   Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana),
  •   Chartered Institute of Management Accountants,
  •   Association of Certified Chartered Accountants,
  •   Institute of Bankers,
  •   Ghana Accounting Technicians Examination (GAT) and Accounting Technicians Scheme West Africa (ATSWA).

 
In addition to the above, applicants should possess passes in Mathematics and English.
 
ii.WASSCE passes (A1-C6) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus 2 elective subjects including Accounting.
 
iii.SSSCE passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus 2 elective subjects including Accounting.
 
iv.General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE) and RSA Stage II with at least grade D in 5 subjects including Accounting, Business Management, English Language and Mathematics.
 
v.Advanced Business Certificate Examination (ABCE) and RSA Stage III with passes in three (3) subjects including Financial Accounting and Economics with grades D or better. In addition applicants must possess passes in English and Mathematics with grades C6 in WASSCE, D in SSCE or credit (6) at ‘O’ Level or better.
 
vi. London Chamber of Commerce (Intermediate) with three passes in subjects including Financial Accounting, Economics and Management. In addition applicants must possess passes in English and Mathematics with grades C6 in WASSCE, D in SSCE or credit (6) at ‘O’ Level or better.
 
vii.G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with a minimum of 5 credits in 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Financial Accounting.
 
viii.G.C.E. ‘A’ Level with passes in Two (2) subjects including Accounting with grades not lower than D. In addition, they must possess credits at G.C.E. ‘O’ Level in Mathematics and English.
 
ix.In addition to DBS (Accounting option), applicants must possess four (4) credit passes in WASSCE (A1-C6) / SSSCE (A-D) including English and Mathematics.
       

B2.  3-YEAR DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT STUDIES (DMS)
 
a)The entry requirements are the same as those for Diploma in Commerce above except that the subjects should include Commerce, Office Administration/ Practice and Business Management.
b)Holders of Private Secretary Certificates
 
Entry by Mature Examination:
Applicants who do not meet the specified requirements in (B1& B2) can gain admission to the programme when they pass a Mature Students Entrance Examination (MEE) from 13th February 2016 - 1st May 2016 to be organized at selected Study Centres throughout Ghana.
a)Holders of Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) certificate awarded by the Technical Examination Unit of GES without four (4) credit passes in WASSCE / SSSCE including English and Mathematics would only be considered for admission after writing and passing all subjects during the Mature Entrance Examination.
b)Applicants should have a minimum certificate in WASSCE/ SSSCE or G.C.E ‘O’ Level with passes in English or Mathematics and any two (2) other subjects.
c)Applicants should be at least 25 years.

The radio programmes include daily health tit-bits and weekly health talks on selected health issues, which are presented by Medical Officers and other health Professionals from the DUHS.

La-Wuogon Muslims Trust Donates Recorders to UCC Library

The La-Wuogon Muslim Trust, a Local NGO has donated twenty Sony ICD-BX140 voice recorders to the University Library. The presentation was held at the Resource Centre for Alternative Media and Assistive Technology in the University Main Library. The donation was facilitated by the Campus Volunteer Foundation to assist the visually impaired students in their studies. Presenting the items, the Executive Director of the La-Wuogon Muslims Trust, Chief Kamar Been Ibn Farid Bongoluri indicated that it was a token to help the students and promised to support the students whenever there was the need to do so. Receiving the item on behalf of the Dean of Students, Mr. Eric Boro, Senior Assistant Registrar at the Office of the Dean of Students Affairs showed his excitement and appreciation for the donation. The donation, he said, would help the students to enhance their learning. Mrs. J. A. Opare-Adzobu, a Senior Assistant Librarian who was present said the donation would go a long way to help the students and also add to the resources available at the library. Present at the ceremony were the Deputy Director of La-Wuogon Muslims Trust, Iddrisu M. Pumaya, President, members of the Campus Volunteer Foundation and a cross section of the visually impaired students.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor Ends Tour to Offices

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G. K. T. Oduro has undertaken his third and final tour to both academic and administrative offices of the University to introduce himself and also familiarize with heads and other members of staff.   The Pro-Vice-Chancellor and his team comprised the registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan, Acting Director, Directorate of Academic Affairs, Mr. Jeff T. Onyame, Acting Director, Directorate of Public Affairs, Major Kofi Baah-Bentum (rtd) and Administrative Secretary to the Pro VC, Mr. Nasir Y. Entsie.  The team visited the Directorate of Finance, Internal Audit, Printing Press, ATL FM and Institutional Advancement Office.   At the Directorate of Finance, Prof. Oduro said finance was key to the efficient and smooth operation of the university but added that the growth of the University was accompanied by its attendant challenges. Therefore to ensure effectiveness and efficiency, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor said efforts should be made to reduce bottlenecks and bureaucracy to the barest minimum in this era of collegiate system.   The next point of call for the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and his entourage was the Directorate of Internal Audit and they were received by the director, Mr. E.P Owusu. Prof, Oduro indicated that without audit the institution would not know whether it was doing the right things or not and asked that they applied the rules and regulations stringently as required of them.   Interacting with the management of the Printing Press, Prof. Oduro averred that universities the world-over become well known through their printing houses. Citing examples in Cambridge and Oxford universities, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor said, “The Printing Press is in the heart of the university visibility agenda, therefore you must work hard for the university to become world-acclaimed”, he stressed. “Again as the university gradually moves towards being weaned of government subvention, this press house has a key role in the mobilization of internally generated funds”, he stated.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor and his team moved to ATL FM where they were also taken round the various offices as well as the studio by the management of the radio facility. Prof. Oduro commended the station for the quality of their output and exhibition of professionalism in their presentations. Station Manager, Kwabena Antwi-Konadu thanked the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the visit and added it has really served as huge motivation for the staff since “they feel belonged and for me, it is most heartwarming”. He promised that they would not relent in their quest to promote the UCC brand and image.   At the Institutional Advancement Office (IAO) the Pro-Vice-Chancellor was received by Mr. Solomon Faakye (Esq.). Prof. Oduro told staff of the IAO that the office was the face of the university; therefore they should endeavor to be nice to all manner of persons they encounter in their duties. “Whoever comes here must leave smiling even if his or her requests are not met” He tasked the office also to ensure that all prospective alumni go out with a strong feeling and attachment, which would make them want to come back to their Alma mater.
