Managing Director of SAFE Calls on Pro-Vice-Chancellor

The Managing Director of the Sasakawa Africa Fund for Extension Education, Dr. Deola Naibakelao has called on the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K. T. Oduro in his office. Dr. Naibakelao who is based in Ethiopia is in Ghana to visit some projects of the Fund as well as follow up on two important assignments and decided to call on the Pro-Vice-Chancellor to announce his presence in the university.He said the University of Cape Coast was currently leading in the development of an agri-business proposal, which would serve as a model for other countries. He also indicated that a case study was being undertaken to find out why the enrolment at the diploma level at the Kwadaso Agricultural College was declining.   Dr. Naibakelao commended the University for expanding the work of the Fund and added that “there are currently 21 projects in both universities and colleges in nine countries around the world.”   Welcoming his guest, Prof. Oduro said it was commendable that the seed that was sown in Cape Coast has blossomed to serve humanity. He added that “it has made a lot of impact because a lot of people have received training in various fields of agriculture”.  The Pro-Vice-Chancellor asked to also expand their scope of the project to cover other sectors of the University saying, “Think of the university from other perspectives too, post-harvest management is one area the university can position itself in”. He thanked the Dean of the School of Agriculture and his team for their commitment and expansion of the project.   The Dean, School of Agriculture, Prof. L. K. Sam-Amoah, Prof. Festus Annoh-Frimpong and Dr. William Ghartey accompanied Dr. Naibakelao on his visit. Also present during the visit was the registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan.

All persons who wrote the just ended West African  Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) and are awaiting results are hereby informed that application for admission into undergraduate programmes of the University of Cape Coast for the 2016/2017 academic year has been extended to 15th July, 2016.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for admission into undergraduate programmes of the University of Cape Coast for the 2016/2017 academic year. Persons who will be writing WASSCE this year (AWAITING 2016 WASSCE RESULTS) can also apply.

Applicants are to buy scratch cards which will enable them to apply for programmes of their choice online.  The scratch cards are up for sale at the Centres listed below:

2.         ONLINE APPLICATIONS

Applicants should visit www.ucc.edu.gh and click on Apply Online for further instructions.

All applicants are required to provide the following information at the back of the large EMS envelope: (a) application reference number  (b) full name (c) postal address (d) first choice programme and (e) application category which should be one of the following: SSSCE/WASSCE or Post-Diploma or Post First Degree or OTHER (to be specified by applicant).

Applicants are advised to read application instructions as well as the contents of the admissions brochure very carefully before completing the online application form.  Applications on which APPLICATION REFERENCE NUMBERS are not indicated will not be processed.

3.         BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. The Minimum Admission Requirement into the University of Cape Coast for WASSCE applicants is aggregate 36.  For SSSCE applicants, the minimum requirement is aggregate 24.     

Candidates must have credit passes in six (6) subjects with overall aggregate of 36/24 at the WASSCE/SSSCE respectively.

Three of the six subjects must be core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and three must be in relevant electives.                     

  For purposes of admission, a credit pass in :

i.   WASSCE means A1 – C6

ii.  SSSCE means A – D

  1. Holders of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (obtained not more than three years ago) must,  in addition to credit passes in five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level subjects (including English and Mathematics), have, at least, two (2) passes in the relevant subjects.
     
  2. Applicants with the General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE) results should have credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects including English Language and Mathematics plus three (3) relevant elective subjects. 
     
  3. Holders of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)/ International Baccalaureate (IB) must possess at least Grades A*/A-C in English, Mathematics and Biology at the Standard (SL)/’O’ Level, in addition to three Higher Level (HL – A to C)/’A’ Level (A to D)/IB 2 (A to C) grades in the relevant subjects.

Applicants are required to read specific Departmental/programme requirements contained in the Admissions Brochure before completing the online application.

4.         FEE-PAYING APPLICANTS

Fee-paying facilities are available for candidates/applicants who are unable to meet the competitive cut-off points determined by the Joint Admissions Committee.

Applicants who wish to be considered may complete and attach the fee-paying forms (available at the sale centres or downloaded from the university’s admissions portal) to their printed online application forms.  Such candidates shall be required to meet the minimum admission requirements.  Copies of last year’s cut-off points for the various programmes are available at the sale centres and the University’s website for applicants’ guidance.

5.         SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

Applicants who are applying into School of Medical Sciences should note that the programme is strictly fee-paying.

6.         PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONS FOR B.ED (PHYSICAL EDUCATION) CANDIDATES

SSSCE/WASSCE candidates applying for B.Ed (Physical Education) should note that the date for the practical examinations will be announced later.

7.         SUBMISSION OF COPIES OF COMPLETED APPLICATION FORMS

(a)       Two copies of completed online application forms accompanied by two copies of results slips should be sent by POST and NOT delivered by hand.

            Copies of the completed online application forms should reach the Director, Directorate of Academic Affairs (DAA), University of Cape Coast not later than Friday, 15th July, 2016.                    

            Applicants are to ensure that application forms are posted early enough to be received before the deadline for submission as forms received after the deadline will not be processed.                             

(b)        No additional documents will be accepted after submission of completed application forms.  Applicants are to note that only photocopies of certificates or result slips should accompany completed application forms.  Original certificates/result slips of applicants offered admission will be inspected before registration.  The documents accompanying the application forms are not returnable.

(c)        Persons awaiting 2016 WASSCE results MUST select the “Awaiting Results” option before providing their examination details. Those who already have results SHOULD NOT select the “Awaiting Results” option but rather go ahead to verify their results

(d)        Application forms received without Application Reference Numbers, two (2) copies each of WASSCE/SSSCE results slips or transcripts, in the case of Post-Diploma and other applicants, will not be processed (this does not apply to persons awaiting results).

A change of programme after the submission of application forms will NOT be allowed.

Sexual Harassment Policy is not to Intimidate Anybody

A member of the Sexual Harassment Committee, Prof. Nancy Lundgren has stated that the introduction of the sexual harassment policy is not meant to intimidate anybody in the University Community. Prof. Lundgren explained that the policy was to educate staff and students to understand and appreciate the relationship male and female at the work setting. “We need to treat each other as human being whether male or female and no person should take undue advantage of the other at the work place,” she stressed. Prof. Ludgren made this statement at a two-day Sexual Harassment Workshop organised by the Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation (CEGRAD) for the various Hall Masters/Wardens, staff and representatives of the student unions on campus at the Institute of Education Conference Hall. She said “the University is concerned about issues of sexual harassment because it undermines the integrity of the society and workplace”. Speaking at the workshop, the Chairman of the Sexual Harassment Committee, Prof. L. K. Sam-Amoah said that hall masters/warden and their staff were selected for the first workshop because of their regular interaction with the students. He noted that the workshop formed part of awareness creation as stated in the policy. The Vice-Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Daniel Okae-Nti said due to the relevance of the policy, it has been incorporated into the Students’ Handbook for wider circulation to enable students understand and report any act of sexual harassment to the appropriate quarters for redress. Some of the topics presented by resource persons at the workshop were “Gender and Power Dynamics in Sexual Harassment” by Prof. Akua O. Britwum, “Legal Definition, Constitutional and Human Dimensions, Some Facts and Processes” by Mrs. Sheila Minka Primo and “Handling Sexual Harassment Cases (victims) Sensitivity” by Adolf Awuku.

Hiskes, includes Mark Schaub, Rachel Siglow and Cindy Hiskes.   Speaking on behalf of the team, Anne Hiskes said it was interesting for them to be visiting Ghana and indicated that they were here to learn about the philosophy of higher education and new programmes of the university.   There has been student exchange between UCC and GVSU for a number of years since the two institutions entered into collaboration.   Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Oduro said though UCC has diversified its programmes and courses to cover new areas, it was still very focused on its core mandate of producing high-quality graduates in education.   It was the hope of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor that other sectors in the university will benefit from the relationship with GSVU adding that “This relationship is not just about institutions but also for families and therefore has to be sustained”.   “We cherish relationships from outside and are particularly proud to be linked to Grand Valley State University”, he stated.    

UCC Hosts International Holocaust Remembrance Day Lecture

A Public Lecture has been held at the University of Cape Coast to usher in the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which falls on Wednesday, January 27.

The Nazi regime and their collaborators killed over six million Jews during the Holocaust in the 1930s.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole in an address read on his behalf by the Pro- Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G. K. T. Oduro, said the theme for the occasion “Holocaust and Human Dignity” was well chosen, especially now that totalitarian and nationalistic regimes were springing up globally over, and horrific atrocities continue to be committed by both state and non-states actors.

The Vice Chancellor indicated that the university was proud to be associated with this year’s celebration adding that “This is an event that mankind must ensure never happens to any people again”, he stressed.

An Educator from the World’s Premier Holocaust Education Institute, Yad Vashim, Mrs. Lea Roshkovsky, who was the main speaker for the event, said to prevent the reoccurrence of sad event, it was important to commemorate the holocaust every year so that people will not forget what happened. “People must not forget what happened during the Holocaust in order to prevent it from happening again”, she added.

The speaker indicated that, building of the Jewish state began before the holocaust, but after the genocide the need to “go home” became apparent among Jews the world over.

She said a lot of lessons were learnt after the holocaust and chief among them was that “all people have to live in dignity irrespective of their race”, Mrs. Roskovsky stated.

Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, H. E Ami Mehl, reiterated that nothing could compensate for the holocaust; the only thing is to remember it and prevent it from being repeated.

UCC Primary School Wins National Spelling Competition

The University of Cape Coast Primary School (UPS) has won the 2015 National Junior Graphic Fan Club Spelling Competition which was organised by the Graphic Communications Group Limited in Accra. Represented by Joshuana Buerkor Nartey, Lord Awingur and Gilbert Kofi Eduah, the UPS defeated six other basic schools in the country to be crowned winners.  With 63 points, UPS beat Falsyd Foundation School in the finals held in Accra. Kabore Basic School from Ho in the Volta Region placed third with 28 points and the Family Life International School in Accra took the fourth position with 15 points. For winning the contest, each of the three contestants from UPS had a Play Station Four, a bank account with GHȻ300 donated by Ecobank Ghana Limited. Each contestant also received an Oxford Dictionary, souvenirs from Ecobank and MoneyGram, a carton of Peak Milk, a carton of Planet fruit drink and a Certificate of participation. The competition formed part of activities to mark the 15th anniversary celebration of Junior Graphic. In a related development, the UCC Primary School has presented the trophy they won to the Chief Executive of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Priscilla Arhin in her office. She commended the School for the positive image it has carved for itself in the Central Region and beyond. She added that “ you have proved to the nation that you are a great giant when it comes to quality basic education in Ghana.”      

UCC Signs MoU with Dominion University College

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) and Dominion University College (DUC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at a short ceremony on campus. The MoU serves as a reference document that makes UCC a mentor institution to DUC. Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole commended DUC for entering into affiliation with UCC. He noted that affiliation is about partnership and therefore the two institutions should work towards achieving results. The Vice-Chancellor gave the assurance that UCC will nurture DUC to grow and live up to expectation, adding “together we shall transform challenges into opportunities and stumbling blocks to stepping stones.” On his part, the President of DUC, Prof. W. Gagakuma expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for the warm reception. He pledged that DUC would abide by the terms of the MoU to help build a strong relationship with UCC. The Vice-Chancellor and President of DUC signed the MoU for their respective institutions. Present at the signing ceremony were the Registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan; Ag. Director, Academic Affairs, Mr. Jeff T. Onyame; Ag. Director Public Affairs; Major Kofi Baah-Bentum (rtd) and Junior Assistant Registrar, Institutional Affiliation Office, Mr. Justice Agyenim Boateng. The team from DUC comprised the Registrar, Mr. David Asante and the External Affairs Officer, Madam Philomena Ekpeh Morkley.    

UTAG Congratulates Prof. George K. T. Oduro

The UCC Branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has congratulated, Prof. George K. T. Oduro on his appointment as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University. A statement signed by the Secretary of the association, Dr. David Teye Doku expressed confidence that Prof. Oduro will bring his expertise and rich experience to bear in the delivery of quality services to members of the association and the entire University. The statement further noted that “We also look forward to using your international experience and network to support the University management to promote scholarship and uplift the image of our University.” The association assured him of the support of its members in the execution of these important tasks.
